Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Creative people are often portrayed as 'thinking outside the box.' They look at things in unconventional and innovative ways, shattering expectations to catch people's attention. Good advertising, catchy political slogans, and compelling drama are all the more memorable if they make us think and feel in new ways. The best is when we see something in an entirely new way and wonder why we never noticed it before. St. Paul reminds the Ephesians that in accepting faith, they must also acquire a fresh, spiritual way of thinking. Old as-sumptions and prejudices hinder their growth in the Spirit. Faith is not an empty idea. Rather, if their faith is true and real, then from it will come justice and holiness. The 'new man' of faith thinks outside the box and allows God's Spirit to guide and direct him. Our own faith runs the risk of falling into complacency. Our assumptions and prejudices can block our vision and hinder the work of the Spirit. A renewed faith sees life "outside the box" and follows the bold call to work for justice and peace in our communities and in the world. "What can I do?" be-comes "What I can do" when we live our faith in the crea-tive ways of God's Spirit.

P lease pray for the sick of our parish....

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 3, 2003

FIRST AND FOREMOST, THANK YOU! I was extremely moved — and the bishop sure appeared to be gratified — by the response that you gave to me last Sunday at the Rite of Installation at the 10:30 a.m. Mass. I was not expecting such a rousing applause and standing ovation when the bishop extended the invitation to you to greet your new pastor. I was very touched, and humbled. Thank you so much. I hope that I live up to all of your hopes and expectations! As the days continue to progress, I keep getting the feeling that there are not enough hours in the days or days in the weeks. There is so much to do around here, so many people to see, so many organizations to meet. I have been doing a lot of that these past few weeks. I have met with many organization heads and/or volunteers. I have had the opportunity to meet with our Parish Pastoral Council. This week, I will be meeting with our parish’s Finance Committee. One of the things that has pleased me so much is that all the people I have met thus far really appear to be excited about helping in the work that is needed to be done in our parish. So many people have good ideas AND the courage to volunteer to bring those ideas to completion. At some places, people are filled with great ideas, but they do not want to do the actual work. It is always exciting to meet people who want to be a part of what is going on. I certainly hope that continues! On another note, I have not taken the opportunity yet to acknowledge the good Sisters who have been a part of our parish family for so long. Sisters Jean, Beatrice and Mary Jean have all returned to their Motherhouse after serving the people of St. Thomas More for many years. Thank You, Sisters, for all the work that you have done for us and the time that you have given to us. May God reward you richly for your selfless service. On still another note, I would like to thank a couple of our high school graduates who are preparing to leave us and go on to college. Doug Coyle and Warren Santner have been great gifts to the parish, particularly to the school, in the area of technology. On behalf of the school and parish staff, I wish them a lot of luck as they prepare to begin college. May God guide them as they embark upon their future. So many people have so much to offer. Let us pray that, with the encouragement of God, we may give of ourselves completely to further His Kingdom!

PLEASE PRAY FOR THEM Priests and deacons have served the Diocese of Gary for a number of years now. Others have served in the territory that is now the Diocese of Gary. Please pray for those men who have been called to God and whose anniversaries of death are this week: August 6: Msgr. John P. Biernacki (1960) Rev. James W. Koons (1998)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A funeral home gives families the chance to chose the music they would like to play during the funeral service. One family asked to begin a particular service with Elvis Presley's hit, "Love Me Tender." The day of the funeral arrived and the music was queued up for the family. Unfortunately the wrong track number was entered into the CD player. Instead of beginning with "Love Me Tender," the family found themselves listening to "Return to Sender."

FOOD FOR THOUGHT The next time you are feeling particularly frustrated, try this prayer: Heavenly Father, Help us remember that the “jerk” who cut us off in traffic last night is a single mother who worked nine hours that day and was rushing home to cook dinner, help with homework, do the laundry and spend a few precious moments with her children. Help us to remember that the pierced, tattooed, disinterested young man who can't make change correctly is a worried 19-year-old college student, balancing his apprehension over final exams with his fear of not getting his student loans for next semester. Remind us, Lord, that the scary looking bum, begging for money in the same spot every day (who “really ought to get a job!”) is a slave to addictions that we can only imagine in our worst nightmares. Help us to remember that the old couple walking annoyingly slow through the store aisles and blocking our shopping progress is savoring this moment, knowing that, based on the biopsy report she got back last week, this will be the last year that they go shopping together. Heavenly Father, remind us each day that, of all the gifts you give us, the greatest gift is love. It is not enough to share that love with those we hold dear. Open our hearts not just to those who are close to us, but to all humanity. Let us be slow to judge and quick to forgive, show patience, empathy and love.

On Stewardship

The Paradox of Our Time By George Carlin

The paradox of our time in history is that: We have taller buildings, but shorter tempers; wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less; we buy more, but enjoy it less. We have bigger houses and smaller families; more conveniences, but less time; We have more degrees but less sense; more knowledge, but less judgment; More experts, but more problems; more medicine, but less wellness. We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too much, and laugh too little, Drive too fast, get too angry too quickly, stay up too late, and get up too tired, Read too seldom, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom. We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values, We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living, but not a life; We’ve added years to life, not life to years. We’ve been all the way to the moon and back, But have trouble crossing the street to meet the new neighbor. We’ve conquered outer space, but not inner space. We’ve done larger things, but not better things. We’ve cleared up the air, but polluted the soul. We’ve split the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less. We plan more, but accomplish less. We’ve learned to rush, but not to wait. We build more computers to hold more information to produce more copies than ever, But have less communication. Theses are the times of fast foods and slow digestion. Tall men and short character; steep profits, and shallow relationships. These are the times of world peace, but domestic warfare; more leisure, but less fun. These are days of two incomes but more divorce; of fancier houses, but broken homes. These are days of quick trips and disposable diapers, Of throw-away morality and one-night stands, Of overweight bodies and pills that do everything from cheer to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the show window and nothing in the stockroom. Everyday we have a choice on how we live our lives. We can live as described above or we can live the life of a Christian Steward. A life where we accept God’s gifts gratefully, nurture and develop those gifts accordingly, and then shares their benefits while returning God’s gifts in abundance. Isn’t it time we all looked into our storerooms and took stock?

Dear Parishioners of St. Thomas More Church, We say “God bless you, thank you and goodbye.” Our stay here and ministry here was wonderful. We are especially grateful for your support and loving care of us over the years and now in your generous and loving farewell. Sisters Jean, Beatrice and Mary Jean

Sunday, July 27, 2003, Bishop Melczek celebrated the 10:30 a.m. Mass as well as the Rite of Installation for our new pastor, Fr. Mike. At the left, the Knights of Columbus formed an honor guard for the ministers of the Eucharistic Celebration. At right, Bishop Melczek instructed the parish on the role of the pastor, the associates and the deacons. At left, Fr. Mike thanks members of the Pastoral Council for their support. The special Mass was attended by many members of the parish family. Those who sang in the choir were especially commended by the bishop at his closing comments. In the photo on the bottom left, a picture was taken of our parish’s three deacons. It was nice to see Deacon Joseph Sobek among us for the Mass. Our parish is very fortunate to have three deacons and three priests! At right, Fr. Mike leads the congregat ion in the Profession of Faith. After the Mass, Fr. Mike gave the bishop signed documents of the Profession of Faith as well as the Oath of Fidelity.

Religious Formation

It took over 30 years for St. Augustine to recognize what God was calling him to do.

When he accepted that call, he became one of the Church’s greatest theologians. We all know people whose talents

could be of great service to God if they were to acknowledge and embrace their calling. Are you one of those people?

We have several openings for catechists for next year. Please think about helping us out. If you are interested, or would like more information, please contact Sr. Marilyn. Training will be provided. Please Register: Registration forms for 2003/2004 are now available in the Parish Office or the Religious For-mation Office. Please return the form, along with a $25 deposit, as soon as possible. Confirmation group photos and videos can be picked up in the Parish Office. Communion group photos and videos can be picked up in the Parish Office. The Religious Formation Office will be open during the summer.

Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 3, 2003

July 2003 Dear STM Parishioner: Hope you are having a wonderful summer. Enjoy the gifts of God that are so apparent at this time of the year – family, sunshine and fun! STM Elizabeth Ministry had a wonderful year last year. Just a few of our activities were:

· Elizabeth Ministry continued with our ministry to those who have lost a child through child death or miscarriage by hosting, along with Our Lady of Grace in Highland, a Rosary using the Mys-teries of Light. This beautiful prayer service was well attended, especially considering the win-try weather.

· Elizabeth Ministry lead one of the weekly Lenten Stations of the Cross with readings that fo-cused on the Women of the Gospel. The readings were inspirational and appreciated by those who attended.

· In an effort to expand our service to mothers in need, STM and OLG’s Elizabeth Ministries joined together to begin visits to St. Monica’s home for pregnant teens in Dyer. We visit the young women the second Thursday of the month for an hour in the evening for prayer and fellowship. We have given much-needed housekeeping gifts to several of the moms from that home who have moved on with their lives.

· Elizabeth Ministry continued to pray the Rosary before meetings for all mothers, distributed Bap-tismal gift bags to parishioners, provided “Kid’s Try” books and toys for the children during Mass, and facilitated a Lenten Collection for various family centered agencies in our Diocese.

· Elizabeth Ministry is also going virtual! Before this fall, we should have a few pages about our ministry and activities on STM’s website at www.stm.bciinternet.com. Check us out!

Elizabeth Ministry is opened to all women of our parish. You are welcome to join us at our first meet-ing of the new school year, which will be September 17, 2003. Elizabeth Ministry meets every third Wednesday of the month from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. We start in the Chapel to pray the Rosary, and then move into the Parish Conference room for our meeting. Childcare is provided. Join us, pray for us, attend our sponsored activities. Our aim is to serve the needs of mothers in our parish – so come, be a part of this fulfilling ministry. In Christ: Kathy Espíritu, STM Elizabeth Ministry Leader (219.924.9212)

Catch the Franciscan Spirit

The Secular Franciscan Order is a community of Catholic men and women in the world who seek to pattern their lives after Christ in the Spirit of Frances. You are invited to “come and see”. We would love to meet you. For more information contact: Sharon Mamalejo, SFO ~ Formation Director ~ Our Lady of Lourdes Fraternity ~ 219-836-8607

Has God gifted you with musical talents? We are looking for a volunteer parishioner(s) with keyboard skills to play for 8:00 am weekday Mass in the chapel (until school begins). We are also seeking new members for our funeral choir. Quite often many people at our funerals are either too grief-stricken to sing, or not familiar with our songs. Having a choir there to sing adds a great deal of beauty to these liturgies. Funeral liturgies occur at 10:00 am. If you can help by playing at some/all weekday Masses, or by singing for Funeral Masses, please give it some prayerful consid-eration. Interested individuals should contact Angie Lorandos or the parish office at (219) 836-8610.

MARKET DAY Pick up will be Monday, August 11, 2003, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the gym. Internet orders due by noon Friday, August 8, 2003. Proceeds to benefit the Athletic Department of STMS.
