Father Joe’s Notes My dear friends,
This weekend, the Church celebrates
Good Shepherd Sunday. Every Fourth
Sunday of Easter, we hear about Jesus,
the Good Shepherd. (That explains the
picture on the cover of the bulletin!)
Christ gathers his flock, protects and
defends them, nourishes them, guides
them, and loves them. We thank the
Lord for his merciful care for us, and
pray that we follow him well as we
walk the way of salvation together. It’s
also a great image for Mothers’ Day,
which we celebrate this weekend.
We wish all you mothers a Happy Mothers’ Day. We
honor the women who, like the Good Shepherd, do so
much to give us life, teach us, care for us, and love us. I
think of my own mother who had eight of us and twelve
grandchildren, making sure each of us knew we hold a
special place in her heart. I think of the single mother
who bears the burden of raising children alone. I think
of the step-mother who tries to find a special place in
the life of a child she loves, while trying to tread lightly.
I think of the mother who made the painful choice to
give up a baby, knowing it would be better for the child
to be part of a family where people could devote more
time and attention. I think of the adoptive and foster
mothers who take children to whom they did not give
birth, but love them as if they had. I think of the women
who never were able to have the children they desired,
but still strive to love the children in their lives without
showing their pain. I think of the godmothers who
witness the power of faith in Christ to the children
specially entrusted to them. I think of all
those mothers who have to find time for their
family while always juggling their careers,
education, community commitments, and the
care of extended family. They often give so
much that they have little or no time for
themselves. To all the wide variety of
mothers out there, thank you for all you have
done and continue to do. God bless you all!
On Mothers’ Day, we thank our mothers
and all the women out there who model the
image of love to us in myriad ways. If God
is love, you bring that image to life for each
of us every day. You are good shepherds guiding the
flock of the Lord entrusted to you. My prayer is that
your children know and understand all you have done.
May the Holy Spirit continue to pour blessings upon
you as you endeavor to gather and tend the flock.
Gratefully yours in Christ, Fr. Joe
Question: Father, on which side was Jesus pierced on the
cross, his right or left?
Answer: Well, we cannot say for certain. Some people like
to give a definitive answer, but there is no answer in
Scripture. The detail is lacking in the first three Gospels
written. Only John includes the event, and there he simply
wrote: “But when they came to Jesus and saw he was already
dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his
lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed
out.” We are told that his side is pierced by the lance, but it
doesn’t say which side. Some argue for the right side, as this
is the side of blessing. Since those blest by Jesus are at his
right hand, blood and water flowing from his right side upon
them would be important. Others argue it had to be the left
side, for the heart would sit in a way that would allow more
blood to flow out if it were not beating, since the bottom of
the heart sits slightly to the left of center; however, the heart
is in the center of the chest. It is accessible from either side
and difference of blood pooling would be minimal on either
side. Some argue for the left since all things in the Roman
military were done right handed. A soldier would have thrust
up into Jesus’ left side. (This only applies if the assumption
is the soldier were in front of the cross and not behind it.)
We can speculate all we want, but we will just never know.
Just accept that Jesus Christ died for you and that blessings
of mercy and love flow from his heart for us. That’s enough!

keep them in your prayers! God bless you all!
