Since September 18, 1922, when the first freshman class of 15 young men arrived for the first day of class, this ritual has been a source of continued renewal and growth. Over the past 90 years, the Augustinians have worked in the vineyard that is St. Augus- tine High School. The educational process at Saints has been continuously refined to specifically address how young men learn and develop. The Augustinians seemed to know intuitively that boys were best educated in an all-boy atmosphere. Eighteen years ago, the International Boys School Coalition was formed specifically to ad- dress how best to educate boys. The Coalition has sponsored educational research confirming many of the opinions related to the education of young men. In July, Ms. Nancy Caine, Director of College Counseling, Father Kirk Davis, O.S.A., Director of Christian Service and I attended the International Boys’ School Coalition’s (IBSC) annual Conference, “Inspir- ing Boys, Inspiring Schools.” It was a unique opportunity to hear world- class lecturers, researchers and authors discuss a subject of great interest to Saints – boys. The lectures and workshops were stimulating and thought provoking. The opportunity to interact with educators from around the world was energizing. It seems that the plight of boys is very similar whether it is in Brisbane, Australia, London, England, the East Coast of the United States, Hong Kong, China, Johannesburg or South Africa – worldwide, boys are in trouble. Forty to 50% of boys entering secondary school do not graduate. Boys are more prone to violent acts against others and themselves. When we turn on the TV more often than not we see and hear someone who is interviewing someone else: a famous politician, athlete, actor, etc. Some interviewers know how to ask the right questions at the right

time, and we can come to know a lot about them and their views – on almost any-thing! Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could have had such an interview with St. Au-gustine himself and ask him questions about his life: What was the background of your parents? What was your family life like? How many brothers and sisters did you have? Did you belong to any church while you were growing up? Did you go away to college? And so on. Well, not to worry. Thanks to Father Ted Tack, O.S.A., we can do just that. Fr. Ted Tack is an Augustinian from the Chicago Province, and from 1971 – 1983 he was the Prior General of our Order. I worked with him in Rome at our General Curia from 1971 to 1977. He is an Augustinian scholar and has written several books. One book is “A Man for Our Times, St. Augustine and His Heri-tage”. In this book Fr. Tack uses the interview methodology: asking Augustine ques-tions, and then let Augustine speak as if he is actually answering the question. As Fr. Tack says, “It was this idea that led me to want to chat with Saint Augustine on my computer, to conduct the following ‘interview’ with this man, who has prob-ably had more influence on the Western Church than any other person, except per-haps St. Paul. The answers that Augustine gives to my questions are based mainly on his auto-biographical work, the Confessions, as well as on the first biography written about him within seven years of his death by his friend of forty years, Possidius. There was much to talk about, so much to ask, that I had to limit my questions. But I have tried not to miss anything really important and relevant, especially for young people. My first group of questions deals with his life from childhood,

through conversion, to his ordination as a bishop, along with his main activities in that pastoral service.” This first group of questions will be our articles for the Saints Scene for this school year. Here is the first ‘interview’ question for this month. Question: All of us are interested in our family and our roots. Augustine, could you tell us something about your own family and your roots? Answer: My mom and dad were both native to the town of Thagaste (modern-day Souk-Ahras, Algeria), which was located some fifty miles south of the large seaport city of Hippo Regius (today’s Annaba, Algeria), located in North Africa on the southern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. This entire territory belonged to the Roman Empire, and was called Numidia [today, this area is divided into two nations: Algeria and Tunisia]. Latin was the common language, but Punic was spoken by many others who had had no chance at a real academic education. Our town was beautifully located on a rather high hill, and produced grain and olive oil in abundance, as was common in that area. When I was born in Thagaste on November 13, 354 A.D., my mother, Monica, was about 23 years of age. She was a devout Christian Catholic, as was her entire family. My father, Patrick – I’m not sure how old he was – was one of ten members of the Municipal Council of Thagaste. At that time he had no particular religious beliefs. As a matter of fact, he was the only member of our household who was not a Catholic. By the standards of the time we were a lower middle-class family, not lacking in necessities, enjoying some of the comforts of life, but far from being wealthy. I shouldn’t forget to tell you that I had a brother and sister also. This is jumping ahead a lot, but my brother Navigius was with me during a crisis time later in my life in Italy. My sister was wonderful lady, who eventually became the superior of a convent of nuns in Hippo while I was bishop of that city.

Despite the fact that all-male schools are not seen as “politically correct,” there is a body of evidence supporting the effectiveness of all-boys’ institutions. While there are educators who do not acknowledge that boys and girls learn differently, a growing body of researchers studying gender differences strongly believes

boys must be educated differently than girls. Boys are much more kinesthetic than girls are. They like physical and “hands-on” activities. They want to touch it, throw it, manipulate it and re-design it. Sitting still for long periods is much more difficult for young boys. Consequently, listening to long lectures tend to produce less than effective results. Most boys do not do well when auditory is the primary mode. They fidget, doodle, talk as they need constantly mo-tion. While their brains are searching for novelty, their bodies are aching for activity. They sit in the typical classroom day after day listening to teachers talk. Most parents associated with single gender educa-tion understand that in a co-educational setting, boys generally are distracted by girls. In this setting boys are inclined not to risk when girls are present in the class-room. They do not want to be wrong in front of girls. They become passive and poor performers in school, compromising their futures. In single gender schools, boys are likely to be more actively involved in class. Not having to perform for members of the opposite gender, an all-boys’ classroom allows boys to be boys without worrying how girls might judge them. While the environment at Saints is certainly boy- friendly, the faculty and administration are continually looking at the current research to improve the method of curriculum delivery. During this next year, Saints will have a series of conversations focusing on a stron-ger connection between the classroom and co-curricular activities in order to engage boys at a deeper, more pas-sionate level. With the available research by the IBSC and oth-ers, Saints will regularly explore the optimum learning environment for Saintsmen. Boys who are able to see the meaning and practicality of the subjects they study are better able to achieve intellectual competence and success. Ninety years ago, educating boys in a single gender setting seemed obvious to the Augustinians, and confirmed by current research, the concept is still the practice at Saints.

driving or parking near school:--Don’t double-park and leave your car unattended.--Don’t block neighbors’ driveways during school or special events.--Don’t take up two parking spaces in front of local residences. Please come to a complete stop at the many stop signs in the neighborhood. Failure to stop is still an expensive moving violation. Would you rather spend three seconds to make a full stop or spend three hours or more at a court-mandated traffic school? Parents, the school strongly suggests that you arrange a designated spot away from school where you can park and wait for your son to meet you. Also, drop your car-pool off a block or two away. The walk is good exercise and it removes a vehicle from the morning traffic jam. If your Saintsman is driving to school for the first time, he must register with the Student Services Office and ob-tain a parking assignment sticker for off-campus parking. No exceptions. Thank you for helping make traffic safety a priority. It’s an important part of relationship-building with our neighbors.

Welcome back to Saint Au-gustine High School for

another year! I hope everyone had a fun and rejuvenating summer vacation. It’s now time to get back to work and get started on another great year. This year marks the 90th anniversary for Saints!

Saints started out as a small school that was virtu-ally unheard of by many outside the community. All of the Augustinians, faculty, and students who have come through Saints have helped create the school that we know today. Ninety years of hard work and determination have pushed Saints to great achievements academically, athletically, socially, and spiritually. It is a great honor to be a part of something that 90 years of work made pos-sible. It is our privilege to be able to live the Saints experience and make sure it continues on for many generations to come. Saints has always been known for having creativity, originality, and a true sense of com-munity and brotherhood. The PIT, weekly Mass, Freshman Welcome Week, and video announce-ments are just a few examples of what makes our school special year after year. This year will not disappoint. The student-run organization respon-sible for planning and organizing events is the Associate Student Body (ASB). I am confident in the group of guys we have in our ASB this year. As president of the ASB, I promise that the students will be well informed on upcoming events such as

Fall Drama Presents

“Guys and Dolls”At NP Birch

TheatreBy Robert Blodgett

The Fall Saints production of Guys and Dolls will be held at the historic North Park Birch Theatre located at 29th & University. “The Birch Theatre

is one of the most professional venues for a play in San Diego. “It’s an honor to be part of production in such an amazingly beautiful place that will only enhance what we’ve all become accustomed to in any Saints produc-tion,” says director and Saints alum mom Deb Torgeson. “It is my favorite place to put on a play.” The Birch was originally built in 1928 and is the only theatre of its size in San Diego County (730 seats). A major restoration was completed in 2005 and now reflects the theatre’s original décor and equipment. Pa-trons will enjoy the newfound elegance of theatre-going during the golden years of the legitimate stage. “Guys and Dolls” is a Tony-award winning musi-cal that will run November 17 and 18 at 7:00 p.m. and November 19, 20 at 2 p.m. Auditions will take place August 29 & 30 from 3-5 p.m. in room #317 with callbacks taking place on August 31 from 3-5 p.m. All interested actors should be prepared to sing a song of one minute or less in length with those wanting lead parts singing songs from other musicals. All others can sing other songs such as Happy Birthday, Saints Alma Mater, Jingle Bells, etc. Anyone interested in working as a crewmember see Mr. Bernens. Also, there is help needed from parents for help with costumes, set building, publicity and a myriad of other jobs. You don’t have to have a student in the play to participate, have fun and take care of those service hours. For questions or information contact Debbie Torgeson at [email protected]

dances, socials, rallies, and sports games. With the convenience of Facebook, you will never be caught off guard with tie day changes or spirit BBQ’s. The ASB serves you, the students, and will work hard to give you a memorable school year. If there is something about the school you want to improve or change, talk to ASB. If you are a freshman or new student who needs help with something, talk to ASB. It is the job of ASB to make sure everyone is getting the most out of their Saints experience. This year, we especially welcome many new faculty, new students, and the class of 2015! As we all know, the first year at any new school can be intimidating. New friends, experiences, lifestyle changes, responsibilities, and privileges are all a part of the first year. The Saints community under-stands that and always does a great job making new people feel comfortable. The atmosphere around Saints is very friendly and welcoming. My advice to the freshman is to be yourself, introduce yourself to new people, and always be respectful of Augus-tinians, faculty, upperclassmen, and peers. Every-one has a place here at Saints, and you’ll be able to find yours in no time. I’m very excited for this school year! It is my senior year and life will never be the same after it’s over. I can’t wait for another year of learning, laughs, good times, and memories with my fellow Saintsmen and the entire Saints community. Saints has done so much for my life, and I’m honored to be the ASB President. I look forward to giving my time, work, and effort back to Saints for all it’s done for me. It’s time to study hard and live the Saints experience. Welcome back to St. Augustine High School for the 2011-2012 school year!

Beginning this month and culminating Sep-tember 2012, St. Augustine High School

will be celebrating its 90th year at its Nutmeg Street location with a year-long series of cam-pus events, including special articles in Saints Scene. This month, we’ve looked into the school’s archives to publish some photos from yesteryear. Next month and beyond, Saints Scene will devote space for articles and pho-tographs supporting the “almost” centennial. The highlight of our upcoming coverage will be a History of Saints article penned by Fr. John Keller, O.S.A., and a member of the Class of 1955—The Editors.

St. Augustine Austin Parents Association invites all families to be part of an exciting tradition, Saints Football and Bas-ketball. If you have already attended a Saints football or

basketball game, you know we have the greatest fans and fan turn out anywhere. The high school years go by so quickly and this is a great opportunity to spend more time with your son as

well as meet fellow Saints families. Our students are very proud to share this unique experience with their parents, grandparents, and Saints Alumni. The best way to participate in this great tradi-tion is with a SAINTS ATHLETIC SPORTS PASS to all HOME GAMES. Remember your pass allows you to skip the lines and pre-purchase deadlines. We’ll see you at the games!!!
