Section 1: Qiyaam (Standing in Salaah)1

1. Qiyaam – A pillar of Salaah.

Allah says in the Qur‟an in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:238,

“Maintain with care the [obligatory] Salaah and [in particular] the middle Salaah and stand before Allah, devoutly obedient.2”

a. Standing is obligatory for the one who is capable and the concession for the one who has an excuse.

Imran bin Husain narrated,

“I had piles, so I asked the Prophet about the Salaah. He

said, "Pray while standing and if you can't, pray while sitting and if

you cannot do even that, then pray lying on your side."

[NARRATED BY IMRAN BIN HUSAIN ; RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI 3 2:218 (THE

BOOK OF SHORTENING THE SALAAH)]

Imran bin Husain narrated,

“I asked Allah's Messenger about the Salaah of a man while

sitting. He said, "If he prays while standing it is better and he who prays while sitting gets half the reward of that who prays standing; and whoever prays while lieing gets half the reward of that who prays while sitting."

[NARRATED BY IMRAN BIN HUSAIN ; RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI 2: 216

(SHORTENING THE SALAAH)]

b. Salaah offered sitting gets half the reward of the Salaah offered standing

Anas Bin Malik narrated,

"The Messenger of Allaah came out to people while they were

offering Salaah sitting due to illness, so he said: “Surely, the Salaah of one who sits is (worth) half of the Salaah of the one who stands.” 4

* [NARRATED BY ANAS BIN MALIK ; RECORDED IN MUSNAD AHMED 12759, IBN MAJAH 1220, SIFAT

SALATUN NABI PAGE NO 78]

c. If a person is unable to do Sajdah on the ground

Jabir Bin Abdillah narrated,

“Once the the Messenger of Allah visited a sick person and saw

him offering Salaah on a pillow, so he took it and cast it aside. So the man

4 Khattaabee said: "The meaning of `Imran's hadeeth is intended for a sick person who is able to undergo hardship and stand with difficulty. Hence the reward of praying sitting has been made half of the reward of praying standing: encouraging him to pray standing while allowing him to sit." Ibn Hajr said in Fat.hul-Baaree (2/468): "This deduction is valid".

took a stick to offer Salaah on it, but he took it and cast it aside and said: “Offer Salaah (i.e. do Sujud) on the ground if you can, but otherwise make movements with your head, making your Sajdah lower than your rukoo.”

[NARRATED BY JABIR BIN ABDULLAH ; RECORDED IN BAIHAQI, BAZZAR, HAAKIM, AS-

SILSILAT-US-SAHEEHAH: 323]

d. Taking support When a person is unable to stand

Umm Qais bint Mihsan narrated,

“When he grew old and put on weight he took a support at his place of Salaah to lean on.”

[NARRATED BY UMM QIAS BINT MIHSAN ; RECORDED IN ABU DAWOOD, AS-SILSILAT-

US- SAHEEHAH: 319]

e. Sitting and then standing in the same rakaat

Aisha narrated,

“Allah's Messenger (in his last days) used to pray sitting. He

would recite while sitting, and when thirty or forty verses remained from the recitation he would get up and recite them while standing and then he would bow and prostrate. He used to do the same in the second Raka.”

[NARRATED BY AISHA ; RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI 2: 220 (SHORTENING THE

SALAAH), SAHEEH MUSLIM]

2. Fixing the sight at the place of Sujud in Salaah.

Aisha narrated,

“Allah‟s Messenger entered the Ka‟ba; His sight did not leave

the place of his Sajdah (in Salaah) until he came out of it

(Salaah).”

[NARRATED BY AISHA ; RECORDED IN IBN KHUZAIMA: 2991, SUNAN AL-BAIHAQI AL-

KUBRA: 9743, HAAKIM: 1797, AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN IRWAA AL GALEEL 2:73]

“He used to incline his head during Salaah and fix his sight

towards the ground"5 [RECORDED IN BAIHAQI, HAAKIM, IT ALSO HAS A STRENGTHENING HADEETH REPORTED BY TEN OF HIS COMPANIONS: TRANSMITTED BY IBN `ASAAKIR (17/202/2). SEE IRWAA' AL GALEEL 354. AUTHENTICATED BY ALBANI IN SIFAH SALATUN NABI PG 89]

Not looking here and there in Salaah

Aisha narrated,

“I asked Allah's Messenger about looking here and there in

Salaah. He said, “It is a snatching away by which the Shaitan steals from the Salaah of the slave”

[REPORTED BY AISHA , RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI 1:718 (CHARACTERISTICS OF

SALAAH), ABU DAWOOD]

The Messenger of Allah said,

“So when you pray, do not look here and there, for Allaah sets His Face for the face of his slave in his Salaah as long as he does not look away.”

[NARRATED BY HAARIS IBN HAARIS AL ASHARI , RECORDED IN TIRMIDHI, HAAKIM,

AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH AL JAAMI 1724]

5 These two ahaadeeth show that the sunnah is to fix one's sight on the place of prostration on the ground, so the action of some worshippers of closing their eyes during

Salaah is misdirected piety, for the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad صلى اهلل عليه وسلم

Section 2: Facing the „Qibla‟

1. Facing towards the „Masjid-Al-Haram‟

Allah says in the Qur‟an in Surah Al-Baqarah 2:144,

“We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], towards the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a Qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in Salaah]”.

2. Facing towards the Ka‟ba

Bara‟a narrated,

“Allah's Messenger prayed facing Baitul-Maqdis for sixteen or

seventeen months but he loved to face the Ka'ba (at Makkah) so

Allah revealed: "Verily, We have seen the turning of your face to the heaven….!" So the Prophet faced the Ka'ba.”

Section 2a Placing a Sutrah and not passing in front of a person offering Salaah

a. Do not pray except towards a Sutra and stopping the person passing

from front

Ibn Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah said

“Do not pray except towards a sutrah, and do not let anyone pass in front of you, but if some one continues (to try to pass) then fight with him, for he has a companion (i.e. a shaytan) with him.”6

*[RECORDED IN SAHEEH IBN KHUZAIMA: 775, SIFAH AL- SALAAH]7

Sahl bin Abi Hasma transmits from the Prophet of Allah

6 This instruction of the Prophet صلى اهلل عليه وسلم is largely neglected today. The Sutrah

is a must for the Imaam or a person praying alone, even in a large mosque, since there is no evidence that it is not required in big mosques.

7 The instruction to stop the person trying to pass and to fight him if he still tries to pass is mentioned in many Hadith. For example this hadith of Saheeh Bukhari 1:488 (Book of Sutra of the Musalla):

“Narrated Abu Salih As-Samman: I saw Abu Said Al-Khudri praying on a Friday, behind something which acted as a Sutra. A young man from Bani Abi Mu'ait, wanted to pass in front of him, but Abu Said repulsed him with a push on his chest. Finding no alternative he again tried to pass but Abu Said pushed him with a greater force. The young man abused Abu Said and went to Marwan and lodged a complaint against Abu Said and Abu Said followed the young man to Marwan who asked him, "O Abu Said! What has happened between you and the son of your brother?" Abu Sa'id said to him, "I heard the Prophet saying, 'If anybody amongst you is praying behind something as a Sutra and somebody tries to pass in front of him, then he should repulse him and if he refuses, he should use force against him for he is a satan.' "

“When one of you offers Salaah facing a Sutrah he should keep close to it, and not let the Shaytaan interrupt his Salaah.”8 [NARRATED BY ABU DAWOOD 695 (BOOK OF SALAAH), BAZZAAR IN ZAWAID, HAAKIM. AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH ABU DAWOOD 692]

b. Should not mind whoever passes from beyond the Sutra

Narrated Musa ibn Talha from his father (Talha bin Ubaidullah ) that

the Messenger of Allah said,

“When one of you places in front of him something such as the stick on the end of a saddle, he should pray and not mind anyone who passes beyond it.” [RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM 1006 (BOOK OF SALAAH), ABU DAWOOD, TIRMIDHI, IBN HIBBAN, MA‟ARIFATUS SUNAN AL AASAAR BY BAIHAQI, SAHEEH AL JAAMI 476]

c. Distance between the Sutra and the place of Sajdah

Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd ,

“The distance between the Musalla of Allah's Messenger and the wall was just sufficient for a sheep to pass through.”[RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI 1:475 (BOOK OF THE SUTRA OF THE MUSALLLA)]

d. Moving ahead in Sahaah to not let anything pass between a praying person and his Sutrah

Ibn Abbas narrated,

“The Messenger of Allah was praying, when a sheep came

8 The above tradition indicates clearly that shaitan crosses in front of a praying person who

prays without a sutrah, causing his Salaah to be null and void without being aware of it.

Even if one prays in an open field, he should place a sutrah in front of him

running in front of him, so he raced it until he pressed his belly against the wall [and it passed behind him]." * [RECORDED IN MUJAM AL KABEER BY TABARANI 11769, HAAKIM, IBN KHUZAIMA. AUTHENTICATED BY ALBANI IN SIFAH SALAATUN NABI PAGE NO 83]

e. Better to wait for forty, than passing in front of a praying person

Busr bin Saeed, Abu Juhaim narrated that, Allah's Messenger

said,

“If the person who passes in front of another person in Salaah knew the magnitude of his sin he would prefer to wait for 40 (days, months or years) rather than to pass in front of him." Abu An-Nadr said, "I do not remember exactly whether he said 40 days, months or years." [RECORDED IN SAHIH BUKHARI 1:489 (BOOK OF SUTRA OF THE MUSALLA), SAHEEH MUSLIM 1027 (BOOK OF SALAAH), ABU DAWOOD, TIRMIDHI, NASAI, IBN MAJAH, MUWATTA IMAAM MAALIK]

Section 3: Takbeer (Saying “Allahu Akbar”)Allah says in the Qur‟an in Surah Al-Muddaththir 74:3,

“And glorify your Lord”

1. Takbeer-at-Tehreemah9 is after the Qiyaam and facing towards the Qibla.10

9 i.e. the first Takbeer after which all actions outside Salaah become Haraam 10 The Intention: The heart is the place of intention. Mumbling words such as "I intend to

pray such Salaah or such number of rak'aat, or I intend to fast, or do such act of worship or

another," just before starting Salaah is a bid'ah which was practiced neither by the Prophet

.nor his companions, nor by their followers صلى اهلل عليه وسلم

Abu Humaid Assaadi narrated,

“When Allah‟s Messenger would stand for Salaah he

would face towards the Qibla, raise his hands and say „Allahu-Akbar‟.” [RECORDED IN IBN MAJAH, AUTHENTICATED (SAHEEH) BY ALBANI IN SAHEEH IBN MAJAH 654]

2. Takbeerat: When to say Allahu-Akbar

Narrated Rafa‟ah Bin Rafai that the Prophet said,

“The Salaah of anyone is not complete unless he performs Wudhu perfectly; he should then say the takbeer, And praise Allah, the Exalted, and admire Him (i.e. the Duaa of Istifta); he should then recite the Qur'an as much as he desires. He should then say: "Allah is Most Great (i.e. Allahu-Akbar)". Next he should bow so that all his joints return to their proper places. Then he should say: "Allah listens to the one who praises Him", and stand erect. He should then say: “Allah is Most Great," and should prostrate himself so that all his joints are completely at rest. Then he should say: "Allah is most great"; he should raise his head (at the

end of his Sajdah) till he sits erect. Then he should say: "Allah is most great"; then he should prostrate himself till all his joints return to their proper places. Then he should raise his head and say the takbeer. When he does so, then his Salaah is completed.”[RECORDED IN ABU DAWOOD 856

ALBANI IN SAHEEH AL JAAMI 2420]

Section 4: “Rafa-u‟l-yadain” (Raising the Hands)

Naafi‟ narrated,

“Whenever Ibn 'Umar started the Salaah with Takbeer, he used to

raise his hands: whenever he bowed, he used to raise his hands (before bowing) and also used to raise his hands on saying, "Sami a-l-lahu Liman hamida"12, and he used to do the same on rising from the second Rak'a (for the 3rd Rak'a). Ibn 'Umar said: "The Prophet used to

do the same."” [NARRATED BY NAAFI‟ ; RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (CHARACTERISTICS OF

SALAAH) 1:706]13

11 All References from Sunan Abu Dawood are from the English translation by Ahmad Hasan (3 volumes with continuous numbering) printed by Kitaab Bhavan.

12 Meaning – “Allah hears all those who praise Him”

13 The Hadith about Rafa-ul Yadain are many so much that Imaam Bukhari comipled an entire book on this subject,

Imaam Bukhari says in Juz-Rafaul Yadain (section 1), “Similarly it is narrated from 17 Sahaba who used to raise thir hands with Ruku among them, Abu Qatadah Al Ansari, Abu Usayd as Sa‟idi al Badri, Muhammed ibn Maslamah al Badri, Sahl ibn Sa‟d as Sa‟adi, Abdulah ibn Umar ibn al Khattab, Abdullah ibn Abbas, Anas bin Maalik (the servant of the Messenger), Abu Hurairah ad Dausi, Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas, Abdullah ibn Zubair al Awwaam, Wail ibn Hujr al Hadrami, Maalik ibn Huwairis, Abu

1. To raise the hands to the level of the shoulders

Abdullah bin Umar narrated,

“I saw that whenever Allah's Messenger stood for the Salaah,

he used to raise both his hands up to the shoulders,

and used to do the same on saying the Takbir for bowing and on raising his head from it and used to say, "Sami a-l-lahu Liman hamida". But he

Musa al Ashari, Abu Humaid as Saidi al Ansari, Umar ibn al Khattab, Ali ibn Abi Talib,

Umm ad-Darda ”

Imaam Bukhaaree also says in Juz rafa' al-yadain, “al-Hasan and Humaid bin Halaal said, "the Companions of the Messenger of Allaah used to raise their hands" and they did not exclude any one of the Companions of the the Prophet . And it is not established with the people of knowledge from any of the Companions that he did not raise his hands. And it is also related from a number of the Companions of the Prophet what we have described, and likewise from a number of scholars of Mecca, Hijaaz, Iraaq, Shaam, Basra, Yemen, and a number from Khurasaan. From amongst them: Sa'eed bin Jubair, 'Ataa bin Abee Rabaah, Mujaahid, al-Qaasim bin Muhammad, Saalim bin Abdullaah bin Umar bin al-Khattaab, Umar bin Abdul Aziz, Nu'maan bin Abee Ayaash, al-Hasan, ibn Seereen, Tawoos, Makhool, Abdullaah bin Deenaar, Naafi' the servant of Umar, al-Hasan bin Muslim, Qais bin Sa'd and many more. And it is related from Umm ad-Dardaa that she used to raise her hands”

ash-Shawkaanee said in an-Nail-ul Awtaar, “al-Bayhaqi list in his {sunan} and {khilaafiyaah} the names of those that the relate the raising of hands (at ruku' reaching) the likes of 30 sahaabah. And he said, "I heard al-Haakim say, 'the ten promised paradise related this sunnah and others from the greatest of the Sahaabah.' and it is as he said"'

Raising hands before and after Ruku is the Madh-hab of Imaam Ahmed, Imam Shafaee and Imaam Maalik who practised it right up to his death, as reported by Ibn `Asaakir (15/78/2).

did not do that (i.e. raising his hands) in the Sajdah.”14

14 Those who claim that there is no Rafa‟ul Yadain say that it was abrogated (Mansookh). However to prove that it was Masookh we need “the abrogating text” (Naasikh) which cannot be found. Generally they give the below mentioned three Ahadith as prove:

1. The Hadith “I see u lifting your hands like headstrong Horses”

“Jabir bin Samura reported: The Messenger of Allah came to us

and said: “How is it that I see you lifting your hands like the tails of headstrong horses? Be calm in Salaah.” [Saheeh Muslim 864 (Book of Salaah)]

However, if a person reads the next Hadith the whole context becomes clear..

Jabir bin Samura reported: “When we offered Salaah with the Messenger of

Allah (may peace be upon him), we pronounced: “Peace be upon you and Mercy of Allah, peace be upon you and Mercy of Allah”, and made gesture with the hand on both

the sides. Upon this the Messenger of Allah said: “What do you point out

with your hands as if they are the tails of headstrong horses? This is enough for you that one should place one's hand on one's thigh and then pronounce salutation upon one's brother on the right side and then on the left. [Saheeh Muslim 865 (Book of Salaah)]

This Hadith is about raising the hands in Tasleem (after Tashahud) as clearly stated and not about Rafa ul-Yadain before and after Ruku. How is it that an „Aalim‟ chooses to

leaves out the context of a Hadith of the Prophet to prove his Madh-hab

(Maslak) correct? Is this not a fraud with the Hadith of the Prophet that a

person quotes it partly and leaves out the detail about the Taslim? Does this „out of context‟ „half narrated‟ Hadith abrogate all the Saheeh Hadith about Rafa-ul Yadain?

2. The Hadith of Bara ibn Aazib. This Hadith is Daeef

Salaah from Takbeer to Tasleem. HEREAFTER – THE KNOWLEDGE

ISLAMIC INFORMATION CENTER PAGE - 14 -

Narrated Al-Bara' ibn Azib : “When the Apostle of Allah began

Salaah, he raised his hands up to his ears, then he did not repeat it” [Abu Dawood 1:749 (Book of Salaah)]. The scholars of Hadith have agreed that his saying, "then he did not repeat that" is a „Mudraj‟ (i.e. an interpolation, inauthtentic addition by a narrator) in the narration from the saying of Yazeed bin Abu Ziyaad. This same Hadith has been narrated from Baraa' without this addition by Shu'ba, ath-Thawri, Khaalid at-Tahhaan, Zaheer and others from the Huffaadh.

Al-Humaidee said, 'this narration was narrated by Yazeed, and Yazeed added it' And Uthmaan ad-Daarimee said from Imaam Ahmad, 'it is not authentic', and likewise al-Bukhaaree and Ahmad and Yahya ad-Daarimee and al-Humaidee declared it da'eef. And Yahya bin Muhammad Yahya said, 'I heard Ahmad bin Hanbal saying, "this hadeeth is flimsy, Yazeed used to narrrate this for a period of time without saying, 'and he did not repeat that', and when he had suggestions whispered to him, he mentioned it.' Also mentioned as „Daeef‟ in Daeef Sunan Abu Dawood.

3 The hadith of Ibn Masood. This Hadith is Daeef.

Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: Should I offere Salaah in the way the Apostle of Allah

had performed it? He said: He offered Salaah and did not raise his hands except

once.”

Abu Dawood said, "this is a summary of a long hadeeth and it is not saheeh with this meaning". [Abu Dawood 1:747 (Book of Salaah)].

And al-Bazzar said also "that it is not established, and the likes of this is not depended upon."

Imaam Bukhaaree says in Juz Rafa' al-yadain after mentioning this hadeeth, “'Imaam Ahmad said, narrating from Yahya bin Adam who said, "I saw the hadeeth of Abdullaah bin Idrees from Aasim bin Kulaib (i.e. this current hadith), and there was not in it, “did not raise his hands except once”, and this is more authentic as the book is more preserved according to the People Knowledge, because a man narrates something, then he consults the book and it is as it is in the book.”

Ibn Abee Haatim says in Kitaabul Ilal, "I asked my father about the hadeeth related from Sufyaan ath-Thawri from Aasim bin Kulaib from Abd ar-Rahmaan bin al-Aswad from Alqama from Abdullaah that the Prophet stood and made takbeer and raised his hands and then did not repeat that, and my father said, 'this is a mistake, and it is said the mistake is from ath-Thawri, for a group of people have narrated from Aasim and all of them have said, "that the Prophet stood in Salaah, and he raised his hands, then he made ruku' and placed his hands together between his knees." And not one of them narrate what ath-Thawri relates.''

2. To raise the hands to the level of the earlobes.15

Maalik bin Huwairith narrated,

“The Messenger of Allah raised his hands to the level of his

ears at the time of reciting the takbeer (i. e. at the time of beginning the Salaah) and then again raised his hands to the level of his ears at the time of Ruku (bowing) and when he lifted his head after bowing he said: „Allah listened to him who praised Him‟, and did like that (raised his hands up to the ears).” [RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM

16 (THE BOOK OF SALAAH): 762]

Haafiz ibn hajr quotes about this Hadith, “Ibn al-Mubaarak said, "it is not established with me" and ibn Abee Haatim said from his father that "this hadeeth is a mistake". And Ahmad bin Hanbal and his shaikh Yahya bin Aadam said, "it is Da'eef", and al-Bukhaaree transmitted this from them and followed them in their verdict. And Abu Dawood said that "it is not authentic." And ad-Daaruqutnee said, "it is not established". And ibn Hibaan said in {as-Salaah}, "this is the best narration that the People of Kufah narrate with regards to negating raising the hands in Salaah at the ruku' and at rising from it, and it is in reality the weakest thing to depend on, because it has defects that invalidate it"'

15 While raising their hands in Takbeer some people touch the earlobes. However this hadith is Daeef and this action is not proven from any Saheeh Hadith. Hence it is incorrect.

“When he used to start Salaah he used to raise both his hands until his

thumbs would almost touch the ear lobes” *[HADITH: DAEEF. RECORDED IN NASAI, ABU DAWOOD RESEARCHED TO BE DAEEF BY ALBANI IN DAEEF

Section 5: Placement of the hands in Qiyaam

1. Placing the Right hand on the Left one.

2. To hold the left hand with the right hand17.

Wail narrated,

16 All References from Saheeh Muslim are from the English translation by Abdul Hamid Siddiqi (4 volumes with continuous numbering) printed by Kitaab Bhavan also available on the internet at www.islamsmessage.com 17 Albani says in his book “Sifah Salaah an Nabi”, “In this hadeeth there is evidence that grasping is from the sunnah, and in the previous hadeeth that so is placing, so both are sunnah. As for the combination of holding and placing, which some of the later Hanafees hold to be good, then that is an innovation; its form as they state is to place the right hand on the left, holding the wrist with the little finger and the thumb, and laying flat the remaining three fingers, as described in Ibn `Aabideen's Footnotes on Durr al-Mukhtaar (1/454); so do not be confused by what they say.”

Hadith is Daeef

“Surely from the Sunnah of Salaah is to keep one palm over another below the navel.”

As shown above (in the Sanad in Arabic) in the chain of narrators one of the narrators is Abdur Rahman ibn Ishaaq (al Waasitee). This hadith comes from different chain of narrations, however in all the chain of narrations Abdur Rahman ibn Ishaaq appears.

Imam Ahmed ibn Hanbal and Abu Haatim said about him, "rejected in hadeeth."

Ibn Ma‟een said, "he is nothing."

Imam Bukhaaree said, "there is a problem in him." Shaikh ibn al-Hammaam said in „at-Tahreer‟, „when al-Bukhaaree says about someone, "there is a problem in him" then his hadeeth are not depended upon or used for support, or given any consideration.‟

And an-Nawawee said in „al-Khulaasa‟ and „Sharh Saheeh Muslim‟, "and it is a hadeeth which is weak by agreement for Abd ar-Rahmaan bin Ishaaq is weak by agreement."‟

This also contradicts with the Saheeh Hadith from Ali mentioned above that he

placd his hands on the chest.

There is another second Hadith attributed to Abu Hurayrah , “(The established

way of folding hands is) to hold the hands by the hands in Salaah below the navel.” [Abu Dawood 757 (Book of Salaah), declared Daeef by Albani in Irwa al Galeel 353]

However even this hadith has Abdur Rahman ibn Ishaaq (al Waasitee) as one of the narrators!

b. The Hadith of tying the hands above the navel is Saheeh but general, the specific Hadith is the one about tying the hands on the chest.

“Jarir ad-Dabbi reported: I saw Ali catching hold of his left hand) by his right

hand on the wrist above the navel.” [Recorded in Abu Dawood 756 (Book of Salaah) Authenticated (Hasan) by Albani in Saheeh Ibn Majah 809]

This hadith gives the location of tying the hands as above the navel but is general in the wordings, “above the navel” – it can refer to immediately above the navel, below the chest or on the chest. However, we have four specific Hadith mentioned above, which

give the specific detail “on the chest”. The Chest is “above the navel”. Hence if

we place our hands on the chest we implement on all Ahadith.

There are some people who claim that Imam Bukhari has called "Mua'mil ibn Ismail" as "Munkarul Hadith" [one

who narrates wrong Hadith]. However this allegation is not correct since Imam Bukhari has himself narrated a

Hadith from "Mua'mil ibn Ismail" which is Sahih Bukhari 1:30 (Book of Belief), " 'When two Muslims fight (meet)

each other with their swords, both the murderer as well as the murdered will go to the Hell-fire.' If Mua'mil ibn

Ismail was indeed Munkarul Hadith then Imaam Bukhari would have not quoted him, besides in this has not been

mentioned about him in "Tareekh al Kabeer" the compilation by Imaam Bukhari on the narrators of Hadith. This is

one of the invalid objections raised against a Hadith and its narrators only because it is against one's Madh-hab.

20

This Hadith has been narrated by "Taaoos" who is a major Tabaee. He is reported to have seen 50 Sahaba.

However when a Tabaee narrates a Hadith directly from the Prophet that hadith is considered Mursal.

Hence this Hadith is Mursal. A Mursal Hadith in itself cannot prove any issue. However when it has supporting

evidence in the form of other Hadith then they strengthen this Hadith and remove its weakness. Hence this Hadith is

Saheeh li-Gayrihi (Saheeh but due to support from other narrations). 21

Please note that in all the previous Ahadith the "Forearm" was mentioned or "Middle of the Forearm". In this

Hadith we find the mentioned which means "the joint". Hence both are proven. However the action of some

people that they hold the region above the elbows towards the shoulder i.e. the upper arms, this action is not proven. 22

Some people have taken objection on the narrator "Qabeesah bin Hulb". However he is reliable as mentioned by

Ibn Hajr who said "Maqbool (accepted)", Imaam Al-Ajlee who called him "Siqah (reliable). He is from the Tabeen."

Shamsul Haq Azeemabadi mentions "Ibn Hibban has rated Hadith by "Qabeesah bin Hulb" as Saheeh, hence

Qabeesah is also reliable according to ibn Hibban." Shakh Albani has also rated the Hadith narrated by Qabeesah as

Saheeh in his checking of Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah. The Hanafi scholar Imaam Aini has also

mentioned this Hadith in Umdatul Qaari Vol 6: pg 143 for showing from which side can an Imaam turn from after

26

There is some dispute among scholars about this. But this Hadith and the next one clearly indicate that the hands

should touch the ground first before the knees. It is also the action of the Sahabi and the wordings are explicit.

Regarding the disagreement about how the camel sits, the emphasis is on going down with a 'thud' like the camel

when he puts his knees (i.e. joints) on the ground. The legs of the camel are already on the ground. We should not

put our knees on the ground like the camel. Rather we should put our hands on the ground first and then the knees. 27

Only Seven bones should touch the ground in Sajdah. The Prophet counted the forehead and the nose

as one bone. So do not mention that they are two bones for similarly the palm also has many bones. What is meant

by 'bone' here is 'part'. All those people who put more than these seven parts of the body on the ground (specially

women) should rectify their Sajdah.

“He saw the Messenger of Allah raising his hands at the time of

beginning the Salaah and reciting takbir, and according to Hammam (the narrator), the hands were lifted to the level of his ears. He (the Holy Prophet) then wrapped his hands in his cloth and placed his right hand over his left hand. And when he was about to bow down, he brought out his hands from the cloth, and then lifted them, and then recited takbir and bowed down, and when (he came back to the erect position) he recited:" Allah listened to him who praised Him."

And when he prostrated, he prostrated between his two

palms.”

He then started al-Nisa', and recited it; he then started Al-i-'Imran and recited leisurely. -And when he recited the verses which referred to the Glory of Allah, he glorified (by saying Subhan Allah-Glory to my Lord the Great), -And when he recited the verses which tell (how the Lord) is to be begged, he (the Holy Prophet) would then beg (from Him), -And when he recited the verses dealing with protection from the Lord, he sought (His) protection -And would then bow and say: Glory be to my Mighty Lord; his bowing lasted about the same length of time as his standing -(And then on returning to the standing posture after ruku') he would say: Allah listened to him who praised Him, and he would then stand about the same length of time as he had spent in bowing. -He would then prostrate himself and say: Glory be to my Lord most High, and his Sajdah lasted nearly the same length of time as his standing.” In the hadith transmitted by Jarir the extra words:

find that the Messenger of Allah gave this command generally also,

Ibn Abbas narrates,

"The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) drew aside the curtain (of his apartment) and (he saw) people in rows (saying Salaah) behind Abu Bakr. And he said: … And see that I have been forbidden to recite the Qur'an in the state of bowing and prostration."

Abu Qilabah narrated, "Malik bin Huwairith came to us and led us in the Salaah in this

performed his Salaah." I asked Abu Qilaba, "How was the Salaah of Malik bin Huwairith ?" He replied, "Like the Salaah of this Sheikh of ours--

i.e. 'Amr bin Salama." “That Sheikh used to pronounce the Takbir perfectly and when he raised his head from the second Sajdah

He would sit for a while and then support himself on the ground and get

up.”[RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (CHARACTERISTICS OF SALAAH) 1: 787]

3. How to take support from the ground?

Al-Azraq bin Qais narrated, “I saw Ibn-Umar when he stood up from the two Rakat, took the

support of the ground with his hands, I said to his son and companions, “Maybe he is doing this because of his old age.” They said, “No”, but this is how it is done.”34

doing that.”35

[RECORDED BY ABU ISHAAQ IN “GAREEB AHADEETH” 1/98/5, ALBANI SAID “THIS ISNAAD IS HASAN” IN TAMAAM-AL-MINNAH: PG 196]

Some people say that the Prophet took support from the ground only

when he became old. However, there is no evidence for that. When a person says that

the Prophet did an action only in old age, we need evidence for that. For

example if a person was to say, "The Prophet sat in Tashahud only when

he was old" – How will we refute that? We will ask for evidence. The hadith mentioned above also clarifies the answer of this question.

The strange thing is – those people who say that the Prophet did that

when he was old – they do not even tell old people to do that!

b. There is a Daeef Hadith about not taking support

"It is from the Sunnah of Fardh Salaah that when a person gets up in the first two Rakah he should not take support except a very old person who does not have strength."

[RECORDED BY BAIHAQI IN SUNAN KUBRA, DECLARED DAEEF BY ALBANI IN SILSILAH AHADEETH ADH-DHAEEFA WA MAUZOOA 968.]

This hadith has two problems in its Sanad:

1. One of its narrators is "Abdur Rahman ibn Ishaaq (al Waasitee)". We have mentioned about him in detail in the section of the weak hadith on tying the hands below the navel.

2. The second problem with this hadith is that one of its narrators is Ziyaad ibn Ziyaad who is 'Majhool' (unknown) as mentioned by Haafiz Ibn Hajr.

Section 13 - Tashahhud and sitting in it

1. Pointing while sitting for Tashahhud, forming a ring like fifty three with the fingers and keeping the hands on the knees.

Ibn Umar narrated,

“When the Messenger of Allah sat for tashahhud, he placed

his left hand on his left knee and placed his right hand on his right knee36, and he formed a ring like fifty-three (with his fingers)37 and pointed with his fore-finger.”[RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM (THE BOOK OF SALAAH) 1203]

2. Keeping the right hand on the thigh, the left hand on the knee38, putting the left foot between the thigh and calf of the right leg and to spread the right foot and pointing with the finger

Abdullah bin Zubair narrated,

36 There are different positions for keeping the hands. This is the first position – keeping both hands on knees. 37 The Arabs had a method of counting with their fingers. For count of the number 53 the fingers are held in a position in which the last three fingers are roled in (like in a fist), the thumb in kept on top of the middle finger and the forefinger is held straight (as in pointing). 38 Some people mention that if a person keeps his hands on his knees in Tashahhud his fingers will be cut of on the day of Judgement. However this is clearly wrong as we can see that it is proven to keep the hands on the knee also.

“When the Messenger of Allah sat in Salaah. He

placed the left foot between his thigh and calf and stretched the right foot39 and placed his left hand or his left knee and placed his right hand on his right thigh40, and raised his finger.” [RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM (THE BOOK OF SALAAH) 1201]

3. Keeping the hands on the thighs, putting the thumb on the middle finger, holding the left knee pointing with the forefinger.

Abdullah bin Zubair narrated,

“When the Messenger of Allah sat for supplication, i. e.

Tashahhud (blessing and supplication), he placed his right hand on his right thigh and his left hand on his left thigh, and pointed with his forefinger, and placed his thumb on his (middle) finger, and covered his knee with the palm of his left hand.

[RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM (THE BOOK OF SALAAH) 1202]

The words “he covered his knee with the palm of his left hand” means “With his palm he caught his knee”

4. Closing all the fingers and pointing with the forefinger.

39 This is also one of the ways of sitting in the secong Tashahhud (as will come ahead). In this method the left leg is kept between the thigh and the calf of the right leg. The Right leg is kept in the sleeping position, stretched away from the body. 40 This is the second method of keeping hands in Tashahhud – left hand on the left knee, right hand on the right thigh.

Salaah from Takbeer to Tasleem. HEREAFTER – THE KNOWLEDGE

ISLAMIC INFORMATION CENTER PAGE - 48 -

Ali bin Abdur-Rahman Al-Muawiya narrated,

“Abdullah b. Umar saw me playing with pebbles during Salaah.

After finishing the Salaah he forbade me (to do it) and said: “Do as the Messenger of Allah used to do.” I said: “How did Allah's

Messenger do?” He said that he (the Messenger of Allah) sat at

tashahhud, placed his right palm on the right thigh and closed all his fingers and pointed with the help of finger next to the thumb, and placed his left palm on his left thigh41.” [RECORDED IN SAHEEH MUSLIM (THE BOOK OF SALAAH) 1204]

5. Making a ring with the middle finger and the thumb and moving the forefinger constantly.

Wa‟il bin Hujr narrated,

“I said, “I am surely going to see the salaah of Allah‟s Messenger

that how does he offer his Salaah.” (Thus he described)

“..then I saw him sitting and that he spread his left leg, keeping

his left palm on his left thigh and knee and keeping his right elbow on his right thigh then holding his two fingers and making a ring of it and raising his finger. I saw him moving it while supplicating. 42”

41 This is the third method of keeping hands in Tashahhud – both hands on the thighs 42 a. It is not proven to lift the finger only while saying "Ash-hadu.."

Salaah from Takbeer to Tasleem. HEREAFTER – THE KNOWLEDGE

ISLAMIC INFORMATION CENTER PAGE - 49 -

The common practice is to raise the finger while saying “Ash-hadu An La ilaha..” and then bringing it down. However there is no evidence for that. People come with intellectual evidence that when we are reading the Shahadah we should raise our finger. But where is the evidence for this. Why not raise the entire hand? Does the Muazzin raise his finger while giving the Adhaan? Do we raise the finger whenever we read the Shahadah while reading the Qur‟an? What is the evidence for all of this? Did Prophet

Muhammed not know and we know?

b. Regarding pointing with the finger without moving it

Many people hold that it is better to point with the finger throughout based on the words

mentioned in the other Ahadith above. However there is one point to consider:

There are many Ahadith which contain the word which refer to gestures other than

pointing. Among them is the Hadith from the last days of the Prophet

when he looked out of his room

“Abu Bakr stepped back upon his heels to say Salaah in a row perceiving that the

Messenger of Allah had come out for Salaah. The Messenger of Allah

with the help of his hand signed to them to complete their Salaah.”

[SAHEEH MUSLIM 840 (BOOK OF SALAH)].

Here again the word has come referring to a gesture other than pointing. The word

in all the Ahadith regardingTashahhud is general. But the Hadith of Sunan Nasai

gives the detail of the . The detail is that the Prophet used to, “move it

constantly”.

Hence there is no contradiction between these Ahadith and a person when he moves his finger constantly in Tashahhud he is implementing on the Ahadith having the word

also.

There is a “Daeef” Hadith which says that he used to not move it.

Abdullah ibn al-Zubair said

"The Prophet (Peace be upon him) used to point with his finger (at the end of tashahhud) and he would not move it."

6. Difference between first and second Tashahhud.

the right one; and in the last Rak'a he pushed his left foot forward and kept the other foot propped up and sat over the buttocks"43 [RECORDED IN SAHEEH BUKHARI (CHARACTERISTICS OF SALAAH) 1:791]

Section 14 - At-Tahiyyaat

1. What to read in the „Tashahhud‟?

Ibn Mas‟ud narrated,

“Allah's Messenger taught me the Tashah-hud as he taught me

43 There is a different way of sitting in the second Tashahhud as mentioned in this hadith. In this method a person keeps his left leg below the right calf, hence he sits on his buttock (not on the left leg as in the first Tashahhud), the right leg is kept propped-up. This is one of the ways of sitting in the second Tashahhud.
