ORIENTAL GUIDE
RECORDER
TREASURER
Nobles, Illustrious Sirs, Friends, and Family,
We are half-way through the year and have accomplished a lot. Our events have been successful but not well attended. I regret that too many of our new or old nobles come out to our events but hope attendance will improve when we move into our new building.
We are looking to move into our new home about Mid-September. Our cornerstone ceremony will be held on September 16th, 2018 and our Grand Opening will take place sometime before the New Year. We’ve had many nobles that have contributed to the success of our new Shrine. I want to Thank You all for helping Salaam go forward! We still have many more events and fun programs coming up. I encourage you all to participate in the growth of our new fraternity. Our success depends on your participation.
A few words about Clubs and Units:
Units are the backbone of Salaam. They provide the opportunity for like-minded, socially active nobles to get together. Your Divan will continue to do whatever it takes to help you be successful in recruiting and keeping your organization running. But it is you, the Nobles, who must recruit new members. You have the tools; our newsletter, emails, constant contact, all provided by Ana in the office. Yes, we have a few new clubs, but this is not to detract anyone from participating in any of our units. Also, by participating in Salaam and club events, you can speak to other Nobles and promote your unit. This takes an effort on your part to come out.
On Saturday, June 23rd, our High Priest and Prophet will be running a “Hawaiian Theme” Oasis Night which will be an open house (free). Our newest members will be especially invited. The following Saturday, June 30th, from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. we will be hosting a “Meet and Greet” for our clubs and units. Motor Corps has said they will be there. If you wantyour Unit or Club to participate call the office as soon as possible. Additionally, any Nobles, Families, and Friends thatwould like to attend, please R.S.V.P.
Lastly, if anyone has any opinions, concerns, or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me directly on my cellphone at (973) 901-8866.
Fraternally,Louis A. O’Neill

Cold Sands Stated SessionJune 29th, 20186:00 p.m. Dinner
Dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. followed by the meeting at 8:00 p.m.While Nobles are in session, ladies, family and friends are welcome to Social Hour in the parlor.
A Message from The Potentate
Greetings Nobles,
May has been quite a busy month for Salaam Shrine. They have finally begun the physical construction on the new home of Salaam Shrine. If the process moves as predicted, we should be ready to move in by September of 2018. I am looking forward to the cornerstone ceremony which will take place on September 16th of this year.
Members of the Divan and our Ladies had the opportunity to celebrate with Illustrious Sir Douglas Fink at his Potentate’s Ball held at LuLu Shrine on May 5th. The following day a contingency from Salaam attended The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series to cheer on David Ragan No. 38, who raced on behalf of Shriner’s Hospital for Children. The Hospital will be the primary sponsor for three of Ragan’s races in 2018. He was even inducted into the Shriners International fraternity in 2012 and continues to serve as its NASCAR Ambassador.
During our May Stated Session two Outstanding Service Awards were presented to Illus. Sir Richard Ash, PP and Noble Gordon Fleming for their dedication to the betterment of our Shrine. In addition, we also welcomed four new Nobles and one Associate Member into our Salaam Family.
On May 24th Members of the Divan were present at the District Gold Token Night held at Clifton Lodge. At that time three Nobles of Salaam were honored with Gold Tokens for their years of service. They were Noble Charlie Willer, Noble Roy Herzfeld and Noble Mike Porter.
Each month we continue to provide available activities, and all are welcome to participate. May 18th was a great comedy night featuring John Pizzi at the Russian Hall and on May 25th the First Annual Salaam Shrine Charity Golf Outing took place at Farmstead Golf and Country Club.
If any Nobles have suggestions for future activities they would like to see take place, please feel free to contact any Divan Member and share your suggestions and ideas.Yours in the Faith,
Noble Joseph M. HummelChief Rabban Salaam Shriners, Inc.

A Message fromthe Recorder
Nobles,
This has been a BUSY year. Your Potentate has created an endless series of events to provide ample opportunities for fun and fellowship. The office is struggling to keep up with this human dynamo. He barks an endless stream of things for Ana to do. This past month we had an emergent stated session to approve a bylaw change which will allow us to start our stated sessions earlier than 8:00 PM - and – to hold them on a weekend afternoon for the convenience of some who cannot make a weekday event.
At the stated session on the 16th four new nobles “survived” the cold-sands and joined our ranks. You can meet these men and their ladies at the special “Hawaiian Night” open house on June 23rd.
On the 18th we were entertained by comedian John Pizzi. Attendance was lighter than hoped for but those of us who attended had a delightful evening.
The ‘first’ annual Salaam Shrine golf outing (we held one years ago that wasn’t designated annual) was held at Farmstead on the 25th . It was a beautifully warm and sunny day and the golfers enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
Nobles, WE NEED YOU! Without active members we will soon become a forgotten page in history. Our hospitals may continue to function but Salaam Shrine will wither and die without your participation. Our Potentate is providing many events for your enjoyment. Please get off your couch and join us.
Fraternally,
Doug Dampman,Recorder

A Message from the High Priest and Prophet
My Fellow Nobles:
Imagine there is a bank account that credits your account each morning with $86,400. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening the bank deletes whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every cent, of course? Each of us has such a bank, its name is time. Every morning, it credits you 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off at a lost, whatever of this you failed to invest to a good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day’s deposits, the loss is yours. There is no drawing against “tomorrow.” You must live in the present on today’s deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness, and health. The clock is running. Make the most of today.
- Emily Cho
Have you reflected recently on your time? How best are your maximizing your time for yourself, your family, your job, your place of worship, your lodge and your Shrine? I submit that if you haven’t ref lected recently, perhaps you should for your own edification. Hopefully you will find the time to improve your current endeavors and aspire to new opportunities. If you have the time and desire to give more time to your Shrine, or you know of a Brother Mason who may benefit from membership in Shriners International, please contact any member of the Divan to discuss. For those who have given some much time of their own recently, we thank and salute you!

Research Connections News and Events in Shriners Hospitals for Children’s Medical Research Department May 2018
International HeadquartersPediatric Specialty Care
Marc Lalande, Ph.D., SHC Vice President, Research Programs SHC’s Boards of Directors and Trustees has approved a new research strategic plan. The objectives of this plan are to align research with our clinical strengths and to raise SHC’s international clinical research profile and reputation. To accomplish these goals, we will build upon existing areas of strength, establish new focus areas and foster collaboration between SHC sites. With these objectives in mind, we are proceeding with the following objectives: 1) Building on existing areas of strength:a) Based on the strong system-wide response to our previous RFP on regenerative medicine, there is an opportunity to buildsystem-wide cutting-edge expertise around this research theme. For this year’s 2018-19 competitive grant cycle, we haveindicated that regenerative medicine is a priority for all new grants. Moreover, beginning in 2019, we will announce a new jointregenerative medicine grant program that will require the participation of at least two SHC facilities with the goal of fosteringcollaboration between SHC sites and strengthening our regenerative medicine program.b) There is a network of 14 motion analysis centers across the SHC system (SMACnet) that provides excellent clinical care withabout 3,000 patient encounters per year. This unique SHC resource represents an outstanding opportunity for developinginnovative, first-in-class motion analysis technologies. In the summer of 2018, we will issue an RFP to our SMACnet for theenhancement and facilitation of SHC system-wide research collaborations and data sharing. The ability to partner with highlymotivated and tech savvy engineering students could stimulate and facilitate research collaborations within our SMACnet With this in mind, we are establishing an affiliation agreement with the USA’s top-ranked undergraduate biomedical engineeringprogram at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The affiliation agreement will also extend to other areas of SHC clinicalstrength.2) Build a new SHC system-wide capacity in genomic and precision medicine:The coming era of precision medicine requires that SHC set system-wide standards for patient recruitment as well as samplecollection, and processing. Control of our SHC patient DNA samples and the data derived from these will also mitigate thecompliance concerns raised when specimens and data are stored outside of SHC oversight and control. We will launch the SHCLaboratory for Genomic and Precision Medicine at the SHC Tampa Hospital site with the objective of streamlining theextraction of DNA from tissue samples obtained from across the SHC system. For this, we will hire a laboratory manager andtechnician to coordinate sample collection, establish standard operating procedures for DNA extraction, and perform qualitycontrol. The laboratory will also produce libraries for next-generation DNA sequencing.
Implementation of the new research strategic plan will result in changes to current research funding mechanisms in order to ensure that we are investing in initiatives that offer the best opportunity of improving clinical care and raising SHC’s research and clinical international reputation.

Salaam Shrine Supports Shriner and NASCAR DriverNoble David Ragan
In May, a contingency from Salaam Shrine attended The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series to cheer on Noble David Ragan No. 38, who raced on behalf of Shriner’s Hospital for Children. The Hospital will be the primary sponsor for three of Ragan’s races in 2018.
Ragan, whom was inducted into the Shriners International fraternity in 2012, continues to serve as it’s NASCAR Ambassador.

Goodnews River LodgeWelcomes Salaam Shrine!
For the past several years, except for this year, I have travelled to the Goodnews River Lodge in Goodnews Bay, Alaska. I am writing this article to tell you about an amazing camp ran by a guy, a renaissance man, father, and one of the top fly fisher-men in the world. His name is Michael Gorton! I met Michael about 30 years ago and we have been friends ever since. I miss that I was not up at camp this year, but I am proud to be serving as Potentate of Salaam.
I want to tell you about Michael, his camp, and the camaraderie of the staff. To have a successful organization you need to be a strong leader and have a great staff. But with all of this, the main ingredient for things to be successful is by also having fun! With Michael, I learned how to take a piece of a 2x12x10 foot and make a door, a window, furniture, and the list goes on. With the cost of delivering materials to Alaska, you have to learn how to make your own items. We are constantly rebuilding the camp to make it better every year. Hard Winters and bad weather creates a lot of work the following season, just to get up to par. My job at the camp is to work on everything and anything and assisting the staff. While Michael is making furniture, he is also coordinating the staff, flights, public relations, and working on boat motors. The camp is set on the riverbank. You can walk a few feet out of your cabin and start to fish! You’re in the middle of one of the last frontiers America has to offer. American Bald Eagles the size of a grown man, Caribou, Grizzlies, Cranes, Beaver, Mink, and other wildlife. The fishing is phenomenal! Probably because Michael’s staff includes great fishing guides. The unique bend and rocky beds of the river entertain many species of salmon, rainbow trout, and other freshwater fish. On any fishing expedition you can catch plenty of fish. The unique background and different cultures of all the staff that comes from all over the U.S. makes the time you spend out there and memories everlasting. If you are looking for the most amazing fly fishing experience of your life, ya’ll want to come up to the Goodnews River Lodge! If you would like to book, please see the information provided below;
