We are in the process of hiring a new music director to take over for the departing Alex Scheuermann who graduated from FSU and is moving onward and upward with studies at the University of Houston. We are also filling a new staff position: director of student minis- try. This position will focus on our middle and senior high students in our families and community. July 14 our Sunday schedule shifts: the Coffeehouse service start time moves from 8 to 9am. Why the change in service time? Glad you asked. Keeping our eyes on the main purpose of growing as disciples of Jesus and inviting others into this life-changing relationship means occasionally reviewing how and why we do things the way we do them. In this case we find that holding our first service an hour later in the morning is more attrac- tive to guests and supports greater participation in Sunday school classes by those attending that serv- ice. Jim Harnish, author of the “Disciple’s Path” study that two of our Sunday morning classes are experi- encing, speaks to the vital role of being connected to a small group within the church: “The evidence is clear that if an individual’s only contact with the congregation is worship, there is a good chance that he or she will fall away or will miss out on the concern and care of the church community.” (A Disciple’s Path, pg. 40) To grow as a vital church family I ask those of you who are actively participating to support our efforts to do three things: 1. Engage as many individuals as possible in a small group or class to better connect with each another. 2. Encourage all of us to spend time daily in prayer and Bible reading to grow in our un- derstanding and faith in Christ. 3. Continue to improve our setting so guests and returners feel genuinely welcomed and expected. May you find grace and peace in the risen Jesus, our Lord and the Light of the world. - Greg NEW ADULT SUNDAY CLASS: July 14 Not in a Sunday morning class yet? SUMMER  OF  CHANGE

July typically means less activity, but this sum-mer at Salem is not your typical July. We are in the process of hiring a new music director to take over for the departing Alex Scheuermann who graduated from FSU and is moving onward and upward with studies at the University of Houston. We are also filling a new staff position: director of student minis-try. In this case we find that holding our first service an hour later in the morning is more attrac-tive to guests and supports greater participation in Sunday school classes by those attending that serv-ice. Jim Harnish, author of the “Disciple’s Path” study that two of our Sunday morning classes are experi-encing, speaks to the vital role of being connected to a small group within the church:

“The  evidence  is  clear  that  if  an  individual’s  only  contact  with  the  congregation  is  worship,  there  is  a  good  chance  that  he  or  she  will  fall  away  or  will  miss  out  on  the  concern  and  care  of  the  church  community.” (A Disciple’s Path, pg. 40)

To grow as a vital church family I ask those of you who are actively participating to support our efforts to do three things:

1. Engage as many individuals as possible in a small group or class to better connect with each another.

2. Encourage all of us to spend time daily in prayer and Bible reading to grow in our un-derstanding and faith in Christ.

3. Continue to improve our setting so guests and returners feel genuinely welcomed and expected.

May you find grace and peace in the risen Jesus, our Lord and the Light of the world. - Greg

FROM  THE  STREET  TO  THE  SEAT

o Looking for a place to serve? We need volun-teers for a new Outside Welcome crew on Sun-day mornings. Each week we need people stationed in both main parking areas before and after the 11am worship service to guide and assist as needed. Please let Schel Collins or the church office know if you want to help us make a friendly first impression on guests. o Our choir has three robes that have gone astray. Please keep your eyes peeled. We would like to re-turn them to their assigned place so that they are ready for use. Any Choir member will be glad to put them away when they are found or you can just place them in the Choir room. Thank you!

DEAR  SALEM:  THANK  YOU

o “Your compassion, support, generosity and love shown to Ehren and me have made such a differ-ence in our time of loss. Your kindness is appreci-ated and will be used for the purpose it was in-tended. It is such a great help at this time. With grateful thanks for your gifts and with our love, Carolyn and Ehren Britton” o “Thank you so much for the love offering for our family. Your random act of kindness will never be forgotten. This kind gesture will help with the unex-pected expenses that occur during the sickness and death of a loved one. It is wonderful to be a part of such a wonderful and giving church family. With Love, The Family of Jimmy Maxwell” o “On behalf of the Florida Veteran’s Foundation, I want to express our grateful thanks for all your assistance with the North Florida Homeless Vet-eran Stand Down this spring.” – Washington San-chez, Project Director. o “Thanks to your regular financial support, the Wesley Foundation UM Campus Ministry of FSU & TCC has experienced another successful school year of ministry for Jesus Christ. 800 stu-dents and others attended our Easter service and over $6,000 was raised for “micro-loan” projects around the world! And as a Lenten season chal-lenge, students recorded 5,400 hours of community service at Tallahassee area projects and events. Thank you for your support making all this possi-ble!” - Vance Rains, Pastor, and Erik Seise, Director.

PREGNANCY  CENTER  of  GADSDEN  Dedication  &  Grand  Opening!

This service to the community provides a place of loving support and compassion for expecting moth-ers-to-be in difficult circumstances. A celebration open house event dedicated this volunteer ministry to Christ on Sunday, June 23. Havana hosts the first center for our county and is the fruit of many people and hours of labor over a few years. Our own “Moses Baskets” ministry lovingly provides a beautiful and practical expression of Christian love to those needing to know grace is real for them. Here is a sample photo of these works of love from Salem:

In keeping with the theme of “Becoming Disciples of Jesus Christ,” several conference members from churches across the state shared their stories of their faith journeys. Greg and Kimsey represented our North West District as facilitators during discipleship small group sessions. Our church gave $350 toward the conference offering to benefit three vital ministries, including repair and renovation of FSU Wesley campus ministries buildings. Total raised: $74,215. IN  MEMORIUM  Jimmy  Maxwell

James (“Jimmy”) Alexander Maxwell, 65, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Big Bend Hospice House. Jimmy was a member of Bible Believers Fel-lowship in Tallahassee, and grew up with us at Sa-lem. He was baptized as a young child into our Sa-lem congregation’s care on April 9, 1950. The funeral service was held at 11:00 am on Friday, June 7, 2013 at Faith Funeral Home Chapel in Havana. Pastor Dennis Young of Bible Believers Fellowship in Tallahassee, and Pastor Greg Doss of

Salem United Methodist Church led the service. We offer our Christian love and heart-felt sympa-thies to his mother, Lucile Poppell Maxwell, his daugh-ter, Phoebe, and to Margie Smith and all extended family and friends.

 PARKING  LOT  IMPROVEMENT

1st  Street  Entrance  “Smoothed  Out”

By now you have likely experienced the drastic improvement to our driveway coming into the park-ing lot from 1st Street. A drainage pipe was in-stalled and covered by asphalt to eliminate the dip that has long jarred and scraped vehicles entering and departing our campus. We offer our thanks to the Town of Havana for responding to our trustees’ request to address the problem (we asked for permission to fix it and Ha-vana leadership evaluated and concluded they would make the improvement). Salem says a spe-cial thank you to Howard McKinnon, Town Man-ager.

A  NEW  MUSIC  DIRECTOR

As this newsletter is going to print we await the good news of selection of our next music director by the Staff-Parish Relations Committee. A four-member panel from this appointed committee has served as our interview team and will recommend a candidate to the SPRC for final decision on hiring. God has blessed Salem with a difficult chal-lenge: offering the position to only one of the three excellent candidates. We pray the Lord will guide our church in this and every step of faith from this time forward. Each choice or planning decision we make in the present will have a major impact on the fruitful growth and mission achievement of our congrega-tion for decades to come. Another recent church council decision moves us forward as we get ready for a new paid part-time staff position to provide critically important ministry to our middle and high school students in the community. We exist as a body to serve the ultimate pur-pose of Christ: to go and make new followers of Jesus, while growing deeper in our own trust rela-tionship with Him as Lord of Life.
