Grace and peace!

we used a set of readings prepared for us by local pastors Bill and Kay. These readings, which had been picked in December, focused on the idea of exile. We read about the Israelites in the Babylonian exile, wondering what it meant to worship God in this new place that was not of their choosing. When Pastor Bill and Pastor Kay offered this series of readings, we had no idea just how relevant they would be.

Now, for the season of Advent, Pastor Kay and I have been working on another story from the Old Testament: the Exodus story. This story begins as we all know, with the oppression and slavery in Egypt, the ten plagues, the journey through the Red Sea… and then it continues for another 40 years. We’re going to explore what this wilderness journey was like for the Hebrews wandering to a land they have been promised but have never seen. A land they have heard only rumors of. A land that is entirely different from what they knew.

We weren’t able to condense the story into four weeks, so we branched out a little bit. This will be both an Advent series and a Pre-Advent series. Our church year makes a circle, with the weeks between All Saints’ Sunday and Advent always repeating the promise that Christ is coming again. That Christ is coming to take us to a new way of being, that God’s kingdom will be in our midst and it will be like nothing we know. So we will be excited to share with you three extra weeks of midweek services, three Pre-Advent worship services. Celebrating the

Grace and peace!

Last Spring, for our Lenten Wednesday worship services,

end of our church year, celebrating the promise of Christ’s return.

These services will be entirely online or in the mail. I encourage you to embrace the “wandering” of the stories. If you can, consider worshiping from a different place in your house. As we’re remembering our spiritual ancestors in their journey through their wandering in the wilderness, and our own current journey that feels like wandering in the wilderness, let’s embrace the wild-ness of this time of waiting, wandering, and wondering.

Throughout the scriptures, the wilderness is a place of testing and training; God’s people learn what it means to be God’s people in the wilderness. Elijah learns what it means to be a prophet in the wilderness. What will we learn in the midst of our own wilderness? What are we being trained and tested for in God’s mission of love to this world?

Santa’s Headquarters will be held this year although it will be a little different. Due to Covid your help is especially needed this year.

November Stewardship will be for Santa’s Headquarters and Iron County Kids and Local School Kids. Please designate this on your envelope if you would like to contribute.

On October 31st and November 1st, we will observe All Saints Day in our churches. Each year we honor all who have died in the past year.

The scripture readings, hymns, and prayers help us celebrate the gift of eternal life and our fellowship within the communion of saints. During the worship we will remember each member of our churches by name and toll a bell in observance of their passing from this life into God’s glory.

Check out the link on our websites to catch all our videos and conversation starters. We have brand new puppet shows written by our very own Kids’ Club volunteers, Bible stories read every week, and questions to start faith conversations in the home. For most of us, faith does start in our homes, so we are trying to equip you all to have these conversations in your families. Questions and videos are for families of all ages.

Join us on Mondays at 9 am on Zoom for a virtual coffee time for fellowship and conversation. Let Pastor Nicole know if you would like a reminder. You can find the link every Monday morning at 9am on Salem and Zions Facebook pages.

The Zion Lutheran ChurchCapital Campaign

Needed: New Furnace and Canopy Roof Repair

Our Goal is to raise $50,000

The Canopy Roof leaks and forms ice on the front steps, which is very dangerous. The wood underneath has water damage which need repair as well. The present Furnace was installed in 1995 -approaching the end of its life. An energy-efficient furnace would lower our bills substantially and in a short time would pay for itself.

Page 21: Salem /Zion Tidings · Robin Kafczynski 906-932-5189 Sandy Bentley 941-586-6620 E-Mail: office@salemlutheraniwd.com Website: salemlutheranironwood.com Office Hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 –12:00

Should you find it in your heart to give weekly, we’ve simplified the process by enabling you to authorize a regular, automated transfer from your checking, savings or credit card account directly to the church campaign fund account by going to our website: www.zionlutheranchurchironwood.org OR you can give cash or a check during regular weekly worship service. Simply specify Canopy Roof/Furnace on the memo line of your personal check or giving envelope.

Lesson learned

Some time after Eddie Rickenbacker and his companions were rescued while floating for 21 days on a life raft in the Pacific Ocean, he was asked, “What is the biggest lesson you learned from that experience?”

SALEM

Page 24: Salem /Zion Tidings · Robin Kafczynski 906-932-5189 Sandy Bentley 941-586-6620 E-Mail: office@salemlutheraniwd.com Website: salemlutheranironwood.com Office Hours: Mon-Fri 8:00 –12:00

“The greatest lesson I learned,” he answered, “is that if you have all the fresh water you want to drink and all the food you want to eat, you ought never to complain about anything.”

If you have those basic things, give thanks for them this Thanksgiving Day … and every day.

Here is an offering form to use if you would like to send in your offering to Salem. You can cut this out, fill it in and return it in the enclosed envelope with your offering. Thank you!

Thank you for your continued financial support. It is greatly appreciated.
