RY FESTIVAL 201727th - 29th October 2017

www. salisburyliteraryfestival.co.uk

The idea to set up a Salisbury Literary Festival came from the growth and development

of the Salisbury Writing Circle. This was set up in Spring 2015 and meets monthly at Sarum College for a mixture of workshopping, guest authors and networking with fellow local writers. A community of authors from the Salisbury area has developed as a result, from absolute beginners to internationally published novelists.

Building on this base, we decided to launch the inaugural Salisbury Literary Festival in October 2017. The aims of the festival are as follows:

Firstly, one with a strong local content that supports and celebrates writing in Salisbury. There are many great writers, past and present, from the Salisbury area.

Secondly, one that is predominantly fiction based. We want a festival that focuses on creative writing, rather than non-fiction memoirs and celebrity-led books.

Thirdly, a festival that is focused on both readers and writers. The Writing Circle is about creative writing and we want this festival to have a practical element that supports writers.

As you’ll see on the following pages, we’re thrilled to be welcoming such a range of wonderful writers to Salisbury this autumn. We very much hope you’ll join us for what is sure to be a memorable occasion.

Melinda will be discussing her work, and there will also be a chance for you to ask your own questions.

Poison. Alchemy. Revenge. Melinda Salisbury’s first book, The Sin Eater’s Daughter, was the UK’s bestselling Young Adult novel in 2015 and the start of an electrifying fantasy trilogy which concludes with The Scarecrow Queen this year.

Melinda lives by the sea, somewhere in the South of England.

As a child she genuinely thought Roald Dahl’s Matilda was her biography; sadly she never manifested telekinetic powers. Discover how Mel created the world within her trilogy, her passion for fairy tales and fantasy, and her influences – from Game of Thrones to Harry Potter.

Telling stories is not a tradition that’s being revived: it’s one that’s never gone away. Interactive? What’s more interactive than sitting beside a teller who’s making it up as they go along, and telling it right here and right now, just for you and all the other people in the room? Why should kids have all the fun? It’s a little bit like video-games - only much, much better!

The founder of Sarum Story Club, Mike Rogers has been doing it for the past 15 years - and before that he taught German Language and Literature at the University of Southampton (so if he wants Grimm stuff, he can go to the source). Like all storytellers, he takes his stories where he finds them - everywhere. So settle down by fire for the perfect end to a literary day.

Charlie Campbell started as an agent in 2005 with Ed Victor Ltd, before founding Kingsford Campbell in 2014. He is interested in both fiction and non-fiction, with a particular focus on literary novels, thrillers and books that tackle big or quirky subjects in an ac-cessible way. Charlie is also the author of Scapegoat: A History of Blaming Other People and Herding Cats: The Art of Am-ateur Captaincy about his experiences captaining a literary cricket team. Kate Hordern founded the Kate Hordern Literary Agency in 1999, af-ter fourteen years spent selling rights

for publisher Victor Gollancz. The agen-cy represents a range of fiction, some non-fiction, and kids middle-grade. Agency authors include Jane Corry, Kathryn Hughes, and Sam Carrington. Zoe King is a partner and senior agent at the London based literary agency, The Blair Partnership. Her client roster ranges from established talent to new voices and includes Pete Townshend, Bana Alabed, and Sadie Hasler. She also works with Neil Blair on JK Rowling’s commercial publishing activity. Ed Wilson has been an agent at John-son & Alcock since 2007. He represents a diverse list of fiction and non-fiction, encompassing everything from new and debut writers to established, best-selling and award-winning authors. Ed also looks after the majority of the agency’s Estates including Beryl Bain-bridge, Dick Francis, William Trevor, and Elizabeth Taylor.

Mark Dawson was born in Lowestoft, in the UK. He has worked as a DJ, a door-to-door ice cream seller, factory hand and club promoter. He eventually trained as a lawyer and worked for ten years in the City of London and Soho, firstly pursuing money launderers around the world and then acting for celebrities suing newspapers for libel. Today, he is the USA Today bestselling

author of the John Milton and Beatrix Rose books, downloaded more than 2 million times around the world.

Speaking in conversation, Mark will talk about his remarkable writing career, and reveal some of the secrets be-hind making him one of the bestsell-ing self-published writers in the world today.

Closing the festival, we are delighted to offer a wide selection of readings by the rich and varied talent of the current crop of Salisbury writers. From dystopian thrillers to World War One, end of apartheid South Africa to summer in Corfu, kick back and listen to extracts from the many novels published by Salisbury authors in recent years.

Featuring work by: Mandy Baggot, Peter Liney, Julia North, Russell Mardell, Andy Maslen, Rich-ard Jay Parker, Tarn Richardson, Michael Wills, Nick Warren, Jayne Woodhouse and more.

This is the last event of the festival and will be followed by closing drinks at the bar.
