SAL TFORD COMMUNITY ASSOCIA nON Notice of Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting for Members of the Saltford Community Association takes place on Thursday 18th March 2004 in the Avon Room of Saltford Hall starting at 7.30 p.m.

The Association and the premises it runs have been serving the community for more than 40 years but unfortunately many of those in the Management Team have been on board for a similar length of time and feel they have done their share. While we would love to continue with the 'voluntary help' approach, we are having to review that policy to secure the future of the operation.

The running costs of Saltford Hall, like many other things, are rising rapidly and our sources of income are falling. So we have to consider ways of securing our balance sheet.

The SCA Council, elected at the AGM, decides this policy. Please do come to the meeting on the 18th

. If you don't come, we don't know what you are thinking.

ADVERTISING

SCAN has· always had the policy of trying to assist our advertisers in

their products and services in our issues.

In late December/January, we circulated our 'Invitation to Advertise' letter with a tear-off reply slip, If necessary, we then followed this up with phone calls, phone messages and visits to remind people of our print deadline.

Reluctantly. if this fails to produce a response, we have to go to print without you.

Malcolm Guthrie

The lighting of the Christmas tree evening was a very happy occasion. The Saltford Primary School Choif

3

and the Saltford Village Choir gave excellent and the Tree was well and truly lit by young Keiron Etheridge. Father Christmas diverted his flight path to us a visit for which we thank him. The Silver collection and the donations raised £200 for the Rainbow Centre in Bristol which helps children suffering from cancer, bereavement etc. Well done, Saltford,

RUNNING COSTS Those who attend the Association Council meetings regularly will be aware of the relief when we were able to carry out roof and foyer work during the summer of 2003 without dipping in too deeply into our own funds. However, you will be aware of the delicate balance between income and regular expenditure.

In trying to prepare budgets for about five years ahead not only have we had to take into account the regular annual redecoration exercises but also further desirable work to maintain our premises in their present excellent condition. These budgets also reflect the likel ihood of further decreases in the amount of voluntary support, a trend which has been all too obvious in recent years. This will mean more frequent professional and tradesman repairs and maintenance costs. There will probably be an increase in staff wages and salaries.

You know what is coming. The Management and Finance Committee (M & F) at the January meeting decided to recommend to the SCA Council that revenue be raised by 7.5% in April 2004. Members of Council will have an opportunity on Thursday 26 February 2004 to review, ratify or revise this decision. M & F also recommend that a further increase in September 2004 of 7.5% be applied to all sources of income.

As an example, a ri se of 15% in the day rate of the Main Hall or the Wansdyke Room would mean gOP per hour extra and this, shared between a membership of say 25 people, represents about 4p per hour each. Not a lot - and we will still be the cheapest operation of the type for many miles around, especially when considering the premises and facilities we offer. Please continue to support us. You could even publicise our Hall and help increase the number of

5

hirings so that we can spread the financial burden more widely

FROM THE BOOKING OFFICE

All enquiries for booking Saltford Hall should be made using our special telephone number which is

01225874081 We now have an office at the Hall which is situated off the Somerset Room. The Hon. Booking Officer and/or our Booking Assistant staff the office in the momings and occasionally at other times of the day.

OTHER NEWS

Reading the River

A project to tell the fascinating stories of The River Avon Trail is launched today. Working with local councils and several voluntary groups, The Forest of Avon has received a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to provide 15 high quality interpretive information panels, a website and a guide book.

Formerly known as the Avon Walkway, the 28 mile long River Avon trail runs from Pi ll in North Somerset to Pulteney Bridge in Bath. Now the organisers need your local knowledge, old photos, newspaper cuttings and memorabilia to identify and celebrate the heritage and natural environments of the diverse landscapes that make up the terrain of River Avon Trail.

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

The Parish Council has been pressing for work to begin on signage for a 20 mph speed limit in the High Street, Mead Lane and The Shallows and the strengthening of the river-bank in Mead Lane, where erosion is steadily bringing the river closer to the road. We have been assured that the speed limit will be in place by March 2004 and that river-bank work will start in Summer 2004. We await detailed information on the arrangements fo r the river- bank reconstruction and the measures that will be taken to minimise the impact upon access for residents, businesses and visitors .

Green Box Recycling Goes From Strength to Strength

An amazing 77% of residents in Bath and North East Somerset are choosing to recycle their household waste through the Council's weekly green box recycling scheme.

This a dramatic rise from the previous figure of 67% in 2001 and shows how more and more people are recycl ing their waste rather than throwing it away in the dustbin.

The green box collections offer everyone an easy and convenient way to recycle much of their waste straight from the home. The Council offers residents a choice of large or small recycling boxes so people can choose a box to suit their needs. Lids are available for the larger boxes and assisted collections are provided for elderly and disabled people on req uest.

Over ten items can now be collected for recycling . The more usual items include paper, including catalogues and Yellow Pages (most kinds of paper are taken except brown paper), all food and drinks cans , glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles, foil, textiles and shoes. Less usual items include car batteries, engine oil and fi lters , ink and toner cartridges, mobile phones and spectacles

Boxes need to be put at the edge of your property by 8 a.m and while it is not essential to separate the different items in your box, it helps the collectors enormously if you can.

Anyone who wants fu rther information on the green box scheme or who needs to order a recycl ing box can contact Action Line on 01225 39404 1 ([email protected]) or look at the Council 's website on www.bath nes.gov.uklwasteservices

KEYNSHAM ORCHESTRA

November's concert In Keynsham Parish Church led by Mark Bunker under its conductor Robert Jenner proved to be another pleasing occasion for the orchestra. Sadly, however, this was to be Mark Bunker's last performance as its leader.

Remembering the performance of Max Bruch's Violi n Concerto in Saltford Hall three years ago by the Bristol bom

violinist, Katherine Chappell , her return was welcomed with a performance this time of Mendelssohn's popular Concerto in E minor which was appreciated with a lengthy applause from the audience.

Also included in the programme were well-known compositions by Rossini, Smetena and Borodin's Symphony No. 2 in B minor.

Having established its '100 Club for Friends of the Orchestra ' earlier in the year, thanks to ' the thoughtful support of the members, the orchestra has now acquired a side drum and a pair of cymbals which it was proud to demonstrate to the audience.

The response of the audience throughout the concert helped to make it a satisfying evening for all concerned.

Forthcoming events include a concert of light classical music to be given in Saltford Hall on the evening of Saturday 1Slh May and a performance in Keynsham Memorial Park at the Gala Evening of Keynsham's Music Festival on 101h July.

SAL TFORD WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

As usual, our Annual Meeting was held in November when the Committee for 2004 was formed. We were sad that two of our long serving, stalwart committee members, who have both contributed so much to our Institute, were unable to continue but we are delighted that three other members have joined the Committee, bringing with them fresh ideas and enthusiasm.

Our December meeting was held a week earlier than usual when the business part was kept to a minimum. After tea and mince pies, we were entertained by several members giving various readings - some reflective, others very amusing. These readings were interspersed by the singing of carols. Later the same week, a large proportion of members enjoyed a festive lunch at the Bird in Hand.

A new year is now upon us and we look forward to a varied and interesting programme. We meet on the third Tuesday of every month (except August) at 2.00 p.m. in the Avon Room, Saltford Hall , when new members and visitors will be made very welcome. The speaker at the January meeting to be held on the 201h will be Captain Peter Hodge and the subject will be ' Port of Bristol and Ships·.

SALTFORD EVENING W.1.

Saltford Evening W.I members thoroughly enjoyed their Christmas party held in conjunction with their December meeting ... good food, good company and first class enterta inment

made it go with a swing. The visit to the Lord Mayor of Bristol's Christmas 'AT HOME' at the Mansion House, Bristol was enjoyed by 15 members. The choir of Red Maids School sang carols and there was a chance to see some of the silver and portraits.

A new members' coffee morning was held in January at Audrey Ford's home to give new members a chance to meet and get to know the committee members.

We look forward to a busy and varied 2004 with nine new members and a good and varied list of speakers and events.

This was the final allocation of points for the year, which meant that Alan Dummott became Wine Maker of the yea r. To round off the evening, members enjoyed a glass of Port wine accompanied by Christmas cake.

December was a busy time for dancing , with members attending The Corsham Wine Circle's Christmas Dance, also Timsbury and Bath Wine Circle's Christmas Dances. Our own Christmas Dance was held in Saltford Hall on 20th December, with members from six other wine circles attending. Live music was provided by ·Shades· and the dance was voted a great success
