The proposal of developing a multi-use building in Arlington, VA. The development
required retail and a choice of hotel or apartment or ofce, and a special use.
Arlington is occupied mostly by young thirties to late fourties who commute to
Washington D.C. or somewhere else other than Arlington. Therefore, Arlington is a
quiet neighborhood during the day. My goal was to vitalize the city during the day
and night.
The ofce and apartment are located at the site to invite people to work and to live
in Arlington, which would increase the working population in the town. The art gallery
would be the new attraction, not only to the local residents, but to worldwide visitors.

Total anticipated annual carbon emission is 3,826 tons where the majority emission occurs from
electricity consumption [4,465 tons]. The building with 40% glaze will experience high electricity
use and cost, approximately 77%. Out of 77%, 45% [$181,791] will be for HVAC system. Also,
out of 33% use of fuel, 87% is assumed to be utilized for HVAC system. As assumed, monthly
heating and cooling loads are the highest for equipments. Therefore, the Clarendon Mixed Use
Building utilized the most suitable natural lights according to the functions. The accessible green
roofs on the central building benet the heating and cooling loads and provide a get away places
for people who rather enjoy the natural air conditioning.

LED Wire Mesh System
The building with LED wire meshstill stands out clearly since the
LED wire mesh is harder to spot
out during the day. At night, the
LED lights provide a new dynamic
facade of the building. Therefore,
it allows the building to have multi-

LALIBELA, ETHIOPIAROCK HEWN CHURCHES
7/29/2019 Samantha Park's Portfolio 2013

Saint Mesqel Lalibela ordered his people to construct eleven rock
hewn churches in late 12th century as an attempt to build New
Jerusalem
Eleven rock hewn churches at Lalibela, Ethiopia have been listed on
UNESCO heritage site since 1978.
Lalibela is located about 420 miles from Addis Ababa, t he Capital of Ethiopia. The
tourists continuously visit the site throughout the year to see monolithic churches that
are carved out of li ving rocks.
The temperature ranges between mid 70s to low 50s with rainy seasons on July and
August. The moderate temperatures allows to blend the exterior and the interior
places.

The light tubes are covered with glass
panels that are removeable in case of
breakage. The carved rocks surround
the light tubes on the ground to create
pathways as well as seating areas.
The window mullions are built in the
concrete walls. The windows can be
replaced by installing sliding rock
closures at the bottom of the window.

The integration of traditional monolithic design was
emphazised to recapture the essence of UNESCO
world heritage site, Rock Hewn Churches. All of
seven complexes, one public and six privates, are
embedded into the ground and connected with
underground pathways which provide chance to feel
the life at Lalibela in 13th Century.
Once the visitors arrive at the inn, the public building
welcomes them with the lines of coffee and snacks.
Once the visitors are assigned to whichever unit they
prefer to stay, they walk along the underground
pathways lit by the natural lights through the light
tubes during the day. All visitors go through them, and
they experience how its like to wander underground.
12
The site is located about 2,000 feet above the sea level. The private units face the
South to receive the most day lights.
The underground paths are partially uncovered to display the actual routes that
connect seven buildings. The underground pathways are indicated with carved rocks
and light tubes as the above site model shows.

The gorgeous mountain slopes are maintained by keeping the buildings height lows
and the scenic views can be enjoyed from the travellers inn. The thirty minute donkey
ride from the inn to the site adds the additional excitment during the visit to Lalibela.

The wide staircase leads stright to the upper level, the
most spatial area of the building.
The outdoor and indoor cafe seats create a friendlier
atmosphere to attract pedastrians and residents.
South East Corner
The proposal of a community center in Champaign, Illinois,
located between residential and commercial areas. The
current characteristics of the site was integrated to create
a place where people from both areas could have an easy
access.
The site is currently used as a parking lot, which is very
spatial and accessible by people. The spatial interior wasobtained by 20 feet high ceiling at the entrance and 5 feet
ceiling incline throughout the building.
The purple arrows indicate the major noise directions and
the yellow arrows indicate the diffuse light, which provides
the indirect day light. A green space is placed on the west
side of the building to provide noise barrier.

HVAC Distribution
The interior space minimized the use of partitions to
maximize the vnatural light and ventilation. The
clerestories and windows in the basement permit the
natural horizontal and vertical ventilation. The Natural
Resource Diagram displays the use of direct and diffuse
light.
The light shelf system is incorporated on the facade
to prevent the over heating or the glare of direct light
penetration from the South.
The tilted solar panels on the roof collect the direct light
from South.

excessive heat gain or loss, which
improves the overall insulation.
The basketball court and the locker

basement. The gymnasium has ten
feet raised ceiling to allow daylight

18 meter high sloped site located between
Rue Gabrielle and Place du Tertre
The goal of this project was to promote Tango lessons and educational information to the visitors and
local residents.
The incorporation of two distinct areas, a local (Rue Gabriell) and a public (Place du Tertre) communities
that are separated by 18 meter slope, was the most signicant issue t o resolve. The concept focused
on creating a bridge to connect the upper and the lower levels of the neighborhood.

The upper and the lower levels are connected
by a long starcase on the west side of the
building. The building resembles the site by
having two different functions, the institution on
North and exhibitions on South. These areas
are connected by the courtyard bridge.
The Tango Institute itself functions as a bridge
to encourage the visitors and residents to
interact and to mingle between the upper and
lower communities.

TRANSPORT-A-BALL
WHEREVER YOU WANT TO GO
Fold the ball and drive to the next destination
7/29/2019 Samantha Park's Portfolio 2013
16/18
A ball is easy to tranport and it can be placed either on solid
surfaces or in the water. Therefore, the sphere is an adequate shape
for the microhouse. The sphere allows a large volume inside with the
same width and height, which gives freedom of organizing interior
space according to the user.
The water tank is located on the bottom of the sphere to
provide a stablization. The tripod legs and a ladder allow the
Transport-A-Ball to be installed anywhere, seashore, desert,
mountain, city, and so on.
Space Efciency
The oors and the polycarbonated glass walls are divided into fourpieces, which overlaps on one another to allow the ball to fold into
1/4 of a sphere. The folded sphere has a dimension of 5m by 2.5m,
and it could be loaded on the truck and head off to wherever.
The xed furniture including a sink, cabinets, closets, a toilet, and a
bed are attached to the adjustable center poll. Therefore, when the
sphere is fully folded, the furniture forms a single line.
Umbrella Water Collector
- Made out of rubber,
therefore it can be folded
up or down depends on the
weather
Dual Function Pipe
- The outer pipe is connected
to the water tank and the
center pipe is used as a
chimney.
Triple Layered Wall
- For exterior side of the wall,
photovoltaic panels are inserted
between two polycarbonated
glasses.- Vacuum insulation is used to
reduce the thickness of the wall by
ten times compared to the typical
insulation system.
Full Layers of the Sphere
- The rubber umbrella
water collector, photoboltaic
embedded polycargonated
glasses, and vacuum insulation
Direct Lights
- Instead of inserting
photoboltaic panels
in all walls, the top
quarter of the walls areclear glass windows to
allow natural lights
