The objective of this project was to recreate an everyday item, and re-shape its role in society. As the team leader, I led my group through the design process of reformulating the term “tea for two”. By using the pro-gram Solidworks (a 3D rendering pro-gram) we were able to create a tea-pot that is stylish, portable, and most importantly encourages togetherness.

Process and IdeationWe worked with many different forms before we decided on how our final model would look. The goal was to make a portable teapot that could con-tain two cups which would enable people to share tea on the run. Our biggest challenges were making sure that the bevel on the cups would fit the mouth appropriately, as well as ensuring that the spout worked as it was unconventionally designed.

Final Design DescriptionOur final form was a simple shape, as seen above rendered in wood. It is a self contained form which allows for quick pack up, and encourages having tea in someplace other than one’s home.

This project was inspired from the book Evocative Objects, which is a collection of short stories edited by Sherry Turkle. The intent of the project was to find inspi-ration from one of the short stories in this text and turn that inspiration into a per-sonal object that would convey the same meaning. The story I chose for this task was about a stuffed rabbit named Mur-ray. The author used Murray as a symbolic shield against the outside world. For my ideation Murray became a physical space in which the wearer could occupy it and feel protected from their surroundings.

Process and IdeationDoing this project was the first time that I had ever made my own pattern for an item of clothing. Creating a pattern that accurately represented my design sketches was by far the largest challenge that this project posed. Through sketches and mockups I was able to work through this and my result was quite successful.

Process BuildAfter I finished creating the pattern that I was going to use for this gar-ment, I spent many days working in the soft shop sewing the pattern piec-es together. Finishing the project was highly rewarding.

Psychoanalysis

This concept behind this materials ex-ploration was discovering different ways to communicate ideas through small variations in form and colour. Constructed using push pins, the clear ball represents physical pain and how it is easy to express. The colourful ball is mental pain, the random pat-tern that the pins were applied in dem-onstrate how it is much more com-plex and more difficult to understand.

Eco-Living

Part one consisted of modeling a complex which was to be build on a lot 100 x 150 square feet containing sixty-five shipping containers which would act as studio apartments. The second part required the modeling of a one bedroom home using two shipping containers that were al-lowed to be cut up and reshaped.

Sustainable CommunityFor the first part of this project the main requirement was to use the program Google Sketchup. After many long days of building and rendering, my sustain-able complex was completed. This part of the project was a dry run for a design competition that ran later that semester.

Cabin DevelopmentFor the second part of this project the objective was to use the program Solidworks to create the one bed-room home. The class was given more flexibility to play with different rendering techniques and software ability to create our “cabin”. Before I moved into Solidworks to model this home I did many sketches and research into common sizes of appli-ances, furniture, and rooms.

This was a group project between myself and another student. The challenge was to create an interac-tive learning object for children that was not only a toy, but also a fun learning tool that encouaged the parent and child to learn together.

Our final design was a series of pyramid shapes that would sym-bolically “grow” with the plant.

Brainstorming and OpportunityAt the very beginning of this assignment, when all we knew was that we had to create an interactive learning object for children we participated in many brainstorming sessions. These sessions led to the creation of our Opportunity Statements.

2. To bridge the distance between child and parent in an ever increasing digital age, an opportunity lies in the observation and maintenance of growing life.

1. To promote learning and exploration of the outdoors through engaging family activity.

Process and IdeationWe experimented with many different sketches and quick three dimensional mock ups before deciding on our final form. Our original idea was to have an object that would be placed on a window sill, but our three dimensional form exploration led us away from the window sill and towards larger forms that would be more playful and accessible for the child and parent to engage with.

Final BuildWe constructed our final form out of Baltic Birch plywood, and finished it with water based verathane so that the wood would be sealed without letting off toxic fumes into the fam-ily’s living environment. We made inserts using the vacuuformer which would hold the plants, so that mois-ture couldn’t come in contact with the wood. Our final prototype was able to ex-ist in four stages. The first stage being when the plant was small, the second when it grew, third when it was even larger, and the fourth when the exist-ing plant was at its largest stage and more plants were being seeded in the tiers below.
