and Training Trust (SAMET), situated in Bhubaneswar, Orissa. Springdale

Academy of Maritime Education and Training is the first maritime institute

of its kind located in the eastern zone of India which has been set up with

the prime aim of providing maritime education and training to mercantile

seafarers in direct association with some of the renowned and prestigious

maritime colleges/ universities in the United Kingdom. We started in March

2009 with a continuous 6 weeks preparatory OOW course (Pre-HND in

Nautical Science) throughout the year to help direct entry deck cadets and

ratings to gain knowledge and practice in chart work, passage planning,

practical navigation, tides and stability in an endeavour to facilitate their

OOW Course in maritime institutes in the U.K. This course has established a

high level of confidence and motivated individuals, enabling them to have

a clear understanding of the syllabus, thereby assisting them in appearing

for the Safety papers which have been a big hurdle for many in the past.

The feedback that we have received from our past five batches who have

gone through SAMET, has been very rewarding and positive in every respect.

We are starting HND Nautical science, HND Marine Engineering, Maritime

Management, EOOW, IT and MBA courses shortly. We are one of the very few

institutions assuring our maritime students guaranteed guided training on

board ships, which is a mandatory requirement for getting watch keeping

license in nautical sciences or marine engineering anywhere in the world.

Course Contents

The Cadet Training Programme is the first step towards being a Captain on a cruise liner taking passengers around the world or navigating a 300,000 tonne merchant ship (Oil tanker). Merchant Navy encompasses many and varied shipping companies with vessels ranging from 500 to 300,000 tonnes in size. The ships constitute a vital part of the world economy, carrying oil, containers, refrigerated cargo, coal, ore, grain, timber, cars, steel and a thousand other products to keep nations fed and industry supplied. Other commercial activities include cruise liners and passenger/vehicle ferries, cable laying and scientific vessels studying the seabed. As a deck officer and eventually as Captain of one of these vessels you would be responsible for the safe navigation and delivery of cargo or let the passengers travel to their final destination. You as a ship’s officer will be part of a small vital team in charge of millions of sterling pounds worth of sophisticated vessel and cargo.

The course is designed to be integrated with professional short courses and eighteen months guided ship onboard training at sea so that, after three years, the successful student will have not only obtained a Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) in Nautical Science but also a MCA certified Officer of Watch (OOW) Certificate of Competency (COC). This is the initial qualification for an officer to be in independent charge of navigational watch on a commercial vessel anywhere in the world. After further sea time and exams a Chief Mate and Master Mariner certificates can be obtained.”

Deck Cadet Training Program (HND-Part 1 Nautical Science) in association with Liverpool John Moores

Academic Delivery at SAMET will include all H1 & H2 Units (Pre-Sea)

On successful completion of the course students will be awarded Edexcel International HND Nautical Science.

Note: MCA assessment requirements will not be applicable to this pre-sea education programme. Students will be able to progress to complete their seatime with a 40% pass in each of their units and completion of STCW pre-sea courses. Students will also receive EDH training before going to sea. The full EDH course and examination will also be provided at UK after successful completion of 18 months sea time.

Sea time

SAMET on behalf of LJMU will undertake the task of counselling and supervising each student on their TRB . We will advise the students on its content and how to write the TRB before going to sea. We will also counsel the student at midpoint and end of the sea-phase to make sure that they do not arrive in UK with an inadequately completed TRB. Prior to going to sea, SAMET staff will liaise with shipping companies regarding student TRB needs, provide information for Master and officers of each vessel and act as a first point of contact if the ship or company require more information or advice.

The above UK delivery matches our delivery, already approved by MCA for our 36 month sea time entry. The University will award a Cert HE if students meet 40% in their modules. To meet MCA requirements students will have to achieve 65% in Navigation assessments modules, 60% in Stability and 50% in other STCW assessments held in the UK. This will be evidenced by a letter from the programme leader.

Further information

The course units can be studied by students while at sea and be assessed at college while on leave. This course will run with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 20 students.

Experienced Seafarer Route (EOOW)

Candidates will undertake 6 weeks preparatory courses at SAMET for Engineering Knowledge and Academic Written Examinations.

Candidates must have 30 months (912 days) of sea service in the engine-room department while holding a Engine Room Watch Rating Certificate, at least six months of which must have been completed while on the training scheme (six months of the last 12 months sea service must have been spent on duties associated with engine-room watch keeping (or helping the duty engineer officer in a ship with unmanned machinery spaces, under the supervision of a certified engineer officer). Candidates will then return to Liverpool John Moores University for tutorials, IAMI Written Exams and MCA Oral Examinations to gain initial EOOW certification. (The Course will run subject to getting full approval from LJMU)

Preparatory Course for Specialised Seafarer Route (Graduate Engineers)

Candidates with specialised academic qualifications (Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering /Electrical Engineering) recognised by Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) are eligible to apply. The candidate must hold a valid personal medical fitness certificate recognised by the MCA and pass the initial four STCW safety courses before completing a minimum 6 months sea service (including 4 months engine room watch keeping duties). During the sea service period, candidates will be required to complete a Merchant Navy Training Board (MNTB) record book as per the re-quired standard and complete Guided Study course material before returning to Liverpool John Moores University. Candidates will undertake the requisite Workshop Skills training at Liverpool John Moores University and will at-tend tutorials (2 weeks) prior to undertaking IAMI EK Written Examination (on academic and professional subjects) and eventually the MCA Oral examination.

Programme Objectives

Examinations

Examinations are externally set and marked by the Institute. Examinations will be scheduled in March, June, September and December each year. Candidates must be registered and paid-up Student Members of the Institute at the time they undertake the examinations. Examination papers are securely distributed to ICM approved centres and scripts are graded in the UK by ICM appointed examiners. Full details of examination dates are sent to ICM Approved Centres and students should obtain the required information from their own Centre.

Examination Closing Dates

Candidates entering for examinations must ensure that their completed examination entry forms and fees reach the Institute at least eight weeks before the date of the examinations. Examination timetables indicate the closing date for receipt of entries for each sitting.

Examination Results

These are distributed within twelve weeks after each examination period. Candidates are encouraged not to call the ICM direct for results as this confidential information cannot be disclosed over telephone.

Part 1 provides an introduction to the subject, and is structured for those with no previous knowledge or experience of computing. Successful candidates will have attained a standard of computer literacy and numeracy which will enable them to either proceed to more advanced studies or take up careers as data entry clerks, trainee operators or junior trainee programmers.

Part 2 is structured for those with sound data entry and applications experience, providing they also have numeracy and accounting skills. Successful candidates will have a firm basis for seeking positions as computer operators or trainee programmers. Candidates who do not wish to make computing a career will have attained a high level of computer literacy and awareness which will enhance their job prospects in other areas.

On successful completion of Level 1 examinations students are awarded the ICM Certificate in Professional Computing & Information Processing. On successful completion of Level 2 examinations students are awarded the ICM Diploma in Professional Computing & Information Processing. On successful completion of Level 3 examinations students are awarded the ICM Advanced Diploma in Professional Computing & Information Processing and may apply for Associate Membership of the Institute


The Certificate, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Professional Computing & Information Processing is recognised by other professional examining bodies for subject and level exemption purposes. Step 2You can either download an application form (in PDF) from the same page, fill in and send to our Admissions Team OR you can apply online using our Online application form which upon submission comes to the mailbox of our Admissions department.

Make sure you send us your CV and academic documents along with the application form using the online application system.

Step 3Upon receipt of your online application form our admissions team would contact you providing details of scheduled appointment for registration followed by admission.

Step 4After receiving the letter of initial offer and scheduled appointment, our dedicated admissions in-charge would conduct an interview with you and would advise you further about the outcome of the admission interview.

Step 5If your admission interview goes well, you have fulfilled the admission documentation correctly and agreed to the fees plan, it will enable us then to offer you admission in nearest possible/ shortest time available.

Earn While You Learn

Citizens of the 27 European Union countries (plus many of their dependent territories, and Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein) are eligible for free entry to London and sign up as a student on almost exactly the same basis as UK citizens (Provided they have enough money not to be a burden on the state and obey the law put forth by British Government). Citizens of different other countries apart from those mentioned above need an entry clearance and/ or a visa. The Border Agency website gives detailed information about the procedures to be followed, documents required, fees, and how to sort out specific issues and information about entry clearance. The underlying principles of student entry clearance are straightforward and obvious. United Kingdom welcomes bona fide, hard-working, self-supporting students with open arms, on the other hand it takes plausible actions to avoid illegal entry of individuals on student visa who have the motive to slide into the black economy and cause social problems.

An individual on student visa in the United Kingdom, will be permitted to work part-time (i.e. up to 10 hours per week) during the course-work terms, and full time during vacations. In addition, some courses inherently include periods of full or part-time work experience which may be either paid or unpaid.

The British Government has announced the national minimum wage rate for 2009/ 2010 effective from 1 October 2009, for adults (paid to workers aged 22 and over) to be £5.80 per hour which an increase in 1.2% over previously offered wage of £5.73 per hour.

SAMET would like to share the good news with you all about the new prestigious building which is expected to receive the first students in September 2011.

The new building, designed by Springdale Consultancy, is proposed to be built on a plot of 12 acres of land close to a waterfront. This will include classrooms, dedicated staff rooms workshops, simulators, auditorium, accommodation, sports hall with a swimming pool, a fire fighting centre, recreational centre and specific laboratories. There will be provision of well equipped central library with dedicated internet rooms and Wi-Fi facilities within the institution.

The building will have the capacity of accommodating approximately 1,000 students. Apart from this there are plans to provide residential accommodation for students with a provision to provide qualitative transportation and catering facilities. Periodic quality monitoring with performed in the institution in order to bring about plausible changes in academic delivery processes and other facilities, taking into account the institutions’ prime aim to provide quality education and training to students belonging to the eastern zone of India as well as other States.
