Task 1 Which painkiller?

The type of medicine that you need to treat your pain depends on what type of pain you have. But different painkillers work better for different types of pain. All painkillers have potential side effects, so you need to weigh up the advantages of taking them against the disadvantages.

Paracetamol

Paracetamol is used to treat headaches and most non-nerve pains. Two tablets of paracetamol up to four times a day is a safe dose for adults. Side effects are not common and this dose can be taken regularly for long periods.

Overdosing on paracetamol can cause serious side effects, however, so don’t be tempted to increase the dose if your pain is severe.

If the pain lasts for more than three days, see your GP.

Ibuprofen

So-called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, diclofenac and naproxen, seem to work better when there is clear evidence of an inflammatory cause, for example arthritis or an injury.

They should not be used for a long period unless you have inflammation. If you take them for long periods, there’s an increased risk of stomach upset, including bleeding, and kidney and heart problems. Don’t take more than the recommended dose as this will increase the risk of serious side effects.

Aspirin

Aspirin produces the same type of side effects as other NSAIDs, but is not as effective as a painkiller, which means it’s not usually prescribed for pain. It is dangerous for children under 12.

Task 3

Hundreds of families were inspired by the London 2012 Olympics to take up a sport, and the 2014 Tour de France in Britain has encouraged children and parents alike to take to their bicycles and continue the sporting theme. The first two days of this prestigious and world-famous cycle race were hosted by the northern English county of Yorkshire. Enthusiastic crowds lined the streets of the Yorkshire towns Leeds, Harrogate, York and Sheffield to watch their cycling heroes speed past. Day three saw the race transfer further south between Cambridge and London, prior to leaving these shores for France.

Cycling is the ideal activity for families. Apart from the initial cost of the bikes, it is a cheap and fun way to get some exercise and to spend time together. Unlike travelling by car, when you ride a bicycle you can feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. You

have time to take in the views and to spot interesting things you would otherwise miss. Cycling is also environmentally friendly because it does not pollute the atmosphere.Of course many parents are apprehensive at the idea of small children cycling on the road, and sensible safety precautions should be taken. Ensure that everyone is well-equipped with a safety helmet and comfortably dressed for the weather. Don’t forget to take tools, a first aid kit, a packed lunch and a map. Ideally prepare your bikes the night before to avoid last minute repairs and delays which might dampen everyone’s enthusiasm. Build up gradually towards longer distance rides and allow children to cycle at their own pace. Remember that even a short ride to the park can be enjoyable and can provide the perfect opportunity for one-to-one quality time with your nearest and dearest.Sample
