The ArrangerDeborah Baker Monday continues to teach in the award-winning Logan City, Utah orchestra program. She received her B.M.E., magna cum laude , from Florida State University with an emphasis in string education. She was awarded an academic fellowship to attend the University of Alabama where she received her M.M. in Composition. She continued her studies at Louisiana State University, where she received the Chancellor’s Award to participate with the LSU symphony orchestra under the direction of James Yestadt. She has studied theory and composition with Harold Schiffman, John Boda, Frederic Goossen, Paul Hedwall and Dinos Constantinides.

Ms. Monday continued to be an active bass performer when she moved to Utah. After completing the coursework and passing the written and oral portions of the doctoral exams, she was hired to teach in the Logan City School District as a low string

specialist. During her tenure with Logan, she has pursued her interest in composition and arranging for educational strings. This has been a rewarding part of her career while she and her husband, Bill, have raised four amazing children.

Ms. Monday has presented at numerous state music conferences throughout America, as well as several national ASTA conventions and the Midwest Clinic. She is very active as a guest conductor and adjudicator and has received awards and commissions for her work. Her studies in composition and experience in string teaching combine to make her one of the leading contributors to the repertoire for young string players.

The ArrangementIn this unique arrangement, students will have the opportunity to play the same piece in two different styles. The

theme from Vivaldi’s Autumn appears first in a standard string orchestra setting (transposed from the original key of F to D major for the younger players). This first version could very well stand alone as a concert selection featuring students in a traditional Baroque context. They will learn about Baroque articulations, metronomic rhythms, terrace dynamics, and clean harmonies.

The second version of this arrangement is dedicated to a different musical style. The notes of the original Autumn appear somewhat the same but in a different “recipe.” The rhythm in “Seasoned” Vivaldi takes on a swing feel, the harmonies are enriched, and the articulations will probably take on a life of their own. Other melodic deviations (improvisations) occur, which take it even further from the original while always coming back to the highly recognizable theme that defines the piece.

Many groups have emerged recently from the music conservatories with classically-trained players who have chosen to add some alternative styles of playing to their music. (For example, Time for Three, Barrage, Piano Guys, Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Project, and Mark O’Connor.) Students should be encouraged to explore some of the groups who are part of this fusion of musical styles. Hopefully they will feel inspired to both master the original versions of their pieces and start thinking outside of the box as well.

Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was born in Venice, Italy. In his youth, he was recognized as a violin master. He was also a Catholic priest, earning him the nickname “The Red Priest” because of his fiery red hair. He spent most of his career as musical director for a girl’s orphanage in Venice, where he was responsible for teaching music, directing student ensembles, and writing music for his students. This makes him unique among major Baroque composers: instead of creating most of his music for a church, wealthy patrons, or royalty, the main performers and audiences of Vivaldi’s music were disadvantaged girls and young women.

Vivaldi composed a large amount of music in his life, including about 50 operas, 90 sonatas, and over 500 concertos! His music is marked by its elegance and grace, and he was an early pioneer of both orchestration (the craft of combining instruments together to form melodies and harmonies) and program music (instrumental music that describes

something or tells a story). Vivaldi was also an important figure in the development of tonality, which is the system of musical organization still common today. Tonal music relies on key centers (for example, C major) and hierarchies of pitch to create the sensation of tension and release. (Imagine, for example, the “Happy Birthday” song: sing it through in your head, but leave off the last note. Doesn’t it sound like it wants to resolve to the last note? Tonality plays a major role in this feeling.) Almost all of the music you know, including popular music, is tonal, and Vivaldi played a part in making this happen.

After his death in 1741, Vivaldi’s music was largely forgotten. In the 20th century, however, musicians began to rediscover the music of this Baroque master, and he quickly came to be appreciated as one of the most significant composers of his era. Vivaldi’s popular revival was driven significantly by just one of his pieces: The Four Seasons.

Vivaldi wrote his most famous composition in 1723. The piece consists of four violin concertos (music for a violin soloist plus orechestra), one depicting each season of the year. The Four Seasons musically portrays a wide variety of real-world events and phenomena associated with the seasons, including a thunderstorm, singing birds, a hunting party, a babbling brook, and the patter of rain. It reaveals a sensitive understanding of nature, transforming the changing seasons into musical poetry. Today, The Four Seasons is one of the most well-loved pieces of classical music, with over 1,000 recordings and regular performances around the world.
