Area Initiatives
Cessnock Town Centre and Region
Cessnock is the major population centre in the Cessnock local government area (LGA) which is part of the lower Hunter and adjoins the Maitland LGA and Newcastle LGA. The NewcastleLower Hunter extends from approximately 120 km to 310 km north of Sydney and is home to approximately 645,000 people. Cessnock LGA, together with the adjoining Maitland LGA is the most populous regions of the Lower Hunter and has recently been recorded as NSW’s fastestgrowing inland cities and expected to have the second strongest population growth of any area in the State over the next 25 years. Forecasts predict population growth of 71% by the year 2036.
In addition, the lower Hunter region is the sixth largest urban area in Australia and is one of NSW's major centres of economic activity with a large exposure to the resource sector. The Hunter region is currently experiencing solid economicgrowth as a result of the resources boom and other diversified industries. Newcastle Port is already one of the world's largest coal export ports and is currently undergoing a billiondollar upgrade.
There are currently over $10 billion of infrastructure planned for the Hunter region. This is expected to improve road connections, expand mining and energy industries and generate new employment opportunities.
Some of the planned infrastructure projects include:
l $1.5b Hunter Expressway. This is a 40 km expressway between the F3 near Cameron Park and the New England Highway west of Branxton and will be very beneficial to Cessnock based industries and residents.
l $5.1b Government Clean Energy Initiative. The Federal government intends spending $1.6b on solar power, $2.4b on clean coal technology and $1b on other renewable technologies in a range of green energy schemes.

The sheer size and nature of these developments is expected to have a profound impact on the local economy and population growth. Population is forecast to grow by 160,000 by 2031.
