PrefaceIt is a tragedy that there are those self-styled revisers that will take a great book, written by someone else, revise it and in so doing, change the wording to fit their own ideas thus destroying the meaning intended by the original author.

Unnamed revisers have, in the past, changed Saint-Jacome’s statements on mouthpiece placement, general instructions, breathing, tonguing etc. and never even noticed the copyists errors which should have been corrected.

I have undertaken the task of editing this fine book in order to preserve the great method of Saint-Jacome. To do this I have referred to the oldest publications from the Carl Fischer music library as the final authority. My use of footnotes will help establish what the author meant.

It was suggested that I delete pages 270-273 because they deal with crooks and slides that are not applicable at this time and because the entire book from pedal “C” to “F” above high “C” applies to the B-flat cornet or trumpet. However, after careful thought, I decided not to delete these pages as they are a part of the original book and will enable the trumpet player of today to understand what the trumpet player of yesterday had to contend with and the progress that has been made since that time.

The Saint-Jacome method is a book of examples and models on every exercise. All models should be practiced with great care. It has been figured that if Saint-Jacome wrote out every model the book would be five times its present three hundred and sixty-six pages.
