Preface
This textbook was created in order to promote the learning of Japanese for elementary level
learners in university settings. The biggest feature of this book is that it is based on the first half
of the elementary level "JLPTUFS Academic Japanese Can-Do List (AJ Can-Do List)."
JLPTUFS is the "Japanese Language Program of TUFS," which was designed for international
students at our university. The list is specific to academic Japanese and presents what students
can do using Japanese. "Academic Japanese Language Ability" is the language ability needed to
study at a university. The goals are to teach the student to be able to read newspaper articles,
read research outlines and journals, give presentations, participate in class discussions and write
reports and essays. Furthermore, the course aims to help students gain the skills required by
universities to discover and solve issues and conduct analysis using Japanese. The elementary
level course is centered around practicing "listening, reading, speaking, and writing for daily
activities."
The goals of this book is for the students to obtain skills in "self-expression" and "mutual
communication" by performing the tasks based on the AJ Can-Do List, and to acquire basic
grammatical structures and vocabulary at the same time. By incorporating characters, situations,
and topics that students may actually encounter, the textbook makes the tasks and conversations
fun to do. The book has been arranged so that students have a balanced study regimen of
focusing on fluency and accuracy at each stage of learning.
This work is based on the 2010 test edition of Elementary Japanese for Academic Purposes 1
and 2, which was created by The Japanese Language Center for International Students (JLC),
Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, as part of the Elementary Level Teaching Materials
Development Project. We hope that students and educational institutions within and outside of
Japan can use this book. We received a lot of support from many people in order to be able to
publish this work. We thank all of the supporters from the bottom of our hearts.

How to use this book
1. Target Students and GoalsThis book was mainly written for Japanese learners at the post-secondary school level.
Volume 1 contains the first half and Volume 2 contains the second half of elementary level
Japanese. This book features authentic/simulated situations, which can be used for interaction in
real life, called "tasks." Tasks related to university life and cross cultural communication are
included with elementary level sentence patterns that provide a stepping stone towards
proceeding to the intermediate and advanced levels.
The goal of this book is for the students to obtain "skills in self-expression" and "skills in
mutual communication" by performing the tasks based on the AJ Can-Do List, as well as to
acquire basic grammatical structures and vocabulary at the same time.
2.Special FeaturesIn order to make it easy to introduce and practice Japanese, there are many pictures in the
latest edition. The textbook has been arranged so that there is a balance of practicing fluency
and accuracy at each stage of learning. Every lesson has a grammar explanation at the end in
English that has been created based on our university's English version of the e-learning
JPLANG.(https://jplang.tufs.ac.jp/)JPLANG also has grammar explanations available in 11
other languages.
On top of having useful tasks that can be applied to everyday living, the textbook starts with
self-introductions followed by introductions of one's country or region, culture and traditions in
the target language. Through the incorporation of pair work, the learners can also study and
compare each other's cultures while completing various tasks.
This textbook has a supplementary audio CD and vocabulary list (separate volume). For
further study, the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies Japanese Language Center for
International Students website has additional kanji and grammar homework that can be
downloaded and used with this book. There are also illustrations for the teacher to use in class.
Please refer to the below user agreement on conditions and terms.

Volumes 1 and 2 have 12 lessons each. The first part of each lesson has a conversation that
presents a situation or a model presentation. It is possible to have students memorize and present
the conversation/presentation at the end of the lesson. Next, the Can-do goals and sentence
patterns are presented. Once the learner is able to do the Can-do goals, the learner can check the
box □. In the "practice and tasks" section, there is a presentation of the grammar, pattern
practice exercises, and tasks designed to fulfill the Can-do goals. The grammar explanations in
English can be used for previewing and review when introducing grammar and related
inflections. By conducting practice and tasks at each stage, both accuracy and fluency can be
achieved. The grammar is not limited to explanations, but rather includes practice questions. For
audio script that is not written in the textbook and answers to the Grammar quizzes, please refer
to the supplementary booklet.

5. Study TimeEach lesson takes roughly 5 periods (90minutes/period). If there are 5 periods/week, one
volume can be finished per semester. If there is an intensive 10 periods/week class, Volumes 1
and 2 will be finished in one semester. One volume should be finished in approximately 100-
120 hours.
6. Learning KanjiKanji learning starts from lesson 5, and 6-8 kanji words can be introduced in each lesson,
assigned for homework, and quizzed during each class. Therefore, the Kanji list number starts
from 5-1. Volume 1 has 111 kanji letters and Volume 2 has 187 kanji letters to study.
7.Writing FormatSpaces were left between words in lessons 1-9 and the former Japanese language proficiency
test (JLPT) level 3 and 4 kanji are shown in the kanji with kanji readings on the top. Some level
