Your InvitationOn behalf of the Organising Committee, I invite you to participate in Sampling 2010, which is beingorganised to bring together managers, geologists, engineers, metallurgists, grade controllers, samplers, chemists and consultants involved in all aspects of sampling mineral commodities, including resource estimation, quality control and export. The conference will provide a greatopportunity for networking, meeting respected international sampling experts, sharing ideas andcatching up on the latest developments. The Conference is being jointly organised by TheAustralasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) and CSIRO.
The theme of Sampling 2010 is “Getting it Right at the Outset”. While considerable effort isusually devoted to the accurate analysis of samples submitted for resource estimation, grade control, metallurgical accounting and commercial transactions, unfortunately the generation of thesesamples and their subsequent preparation is all too often neglected and not given adequate attentionby senior management, right through to sample preparation staff in the laboratory. Adoption ofcorrect sampling and sample preparation procedures and use of correctly designed equipment arevital to ensuring that the samples submitted for analysis are representative. Otherwise themeasurement chain is corrupted at the outset and the overall precision of the resultant chemicalanalyses will be poor and they may also be seriously biased. As a direct result, the return fromcapital and resources devoted to chemical analysis will be seriously compromised and companiesmay lose millions of dollars and fail to optimise resource utilisation.
I look forward to meeting you in Perth in May 2010.
Sincerely,Dr Ralph HolmesConference ChairmanCSIRO Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship

Optimise Returns Through GoodSampling Practices – ProjectEvaluation to Operations Sunday 9 – Monday 10 May 2010This course requires minimum numbers to be viable. Please register early toensure your place.
This course is for exploration and resource geologists, mine planners, processplant design engineers and metallurgical managers. It will focus on samplingproblems and their consequences for resource determination, feasibility studies, mine planning and process plant design.
Participants will develop their understanding of the theory of sampling and itspractical application to sampling for exploration, resource delineation and thesubsequent processes that lead to project development.
COURSE CONTENT: • Introduction to the main sources of variability• Optimisation of sampling and subsampling protocols • Practicalimplementation of sampling protocols • Sampling and resource evaluation• Sampling to determine economic cut-off grades • Sampling for metallurgicaltest work • Sampling for grade control • Sampling of flowing streams• Sampling for process control • Conventional Statistical Process Control vsChronostatistics • Taking advantage of existing chronological data.
COURSE LEADER: Francis Pitard is an international consultant with majorresource company clients in four continents. He presents short courses forin-house clients, for the Colorado School of Mines, and for ten years, for theAustralian Mineral Foundation. His consulting has helped clients to improveplanning and operations, recovery and profit. His short courses assist professionalsand managers to understand the benefits of well designed sampling protocols.
