-George Halas

The Department of Music at Sad-dleback College is pleased to present a two-piano recital with renowned pianists Kirill Gliadkovsky and Chris Durrenberger on Thursday, February 16th at 7:30 pm in the McKinney The-atre. The concert features Mozart’s Greatest Work for Piano Ensemble – his grand Sonata in D Major for two pianos; Brahm’s extremely popular and richly melodic Hungarian Dances for piano duet (one piano four hands) and Camille Saint-Saens’ humorous, witty and charismatic Carnival of the Animals – a musical tale describing characters of various animals, as well as humans, and making fun of certain musical and non-musical stereotypes with narration of a poem by Ogden Nash, written specifically for the piece.

Chris Durrenberger, Associate Professor at Wittenberg University in Springfield Ohio, has received top prizes at major national and inter-national competitions, including the Coleman and Carmel Chamber Music Competitions, the Los Angeles Etude Musical Club Piano Competition, the Young Keyboard Artists Association In-ternational Piano Competition, and the National Music Teachers Association National Piano Competition. He was selected to pilot a National Endow-ment for the Arts residency, “Chamber Music in Rural America,” which led to hundreds of performances, live broadcasts on National Public Radio, a featured spot on ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings, and a performance for the National Council in Washington, D.C. Solo, concerto, and collaborative engagements have taken Dr. Durrenberger throughout the

world, including the Sarasota and As-pen Music Festivals, the Cairo Opera House, and the Taipei National Hall.

Since making his first public ap-pearance at the age of six, Kirill Gliadkovsky has toured extensively on three continents performing piano and organ recitals and as a soloist with orchestras in various cities in Rus-sia, including Moscow’s prestigious Bolshoi, Maliy and Rachmaninoff Halls, St.-Petersburg Philharmonic’s Glinka Hall, as well as in Italy, U.K., Poland, Mongolia, Canada, Japan and throughout the United States. The venues included Purcell Hall in London, Merkin Hall in New York, Jack Singer Hall in Calgary, Royce Hall in Los Angeles, Orange County Perform-ing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, CA, Centers for the Arts in Scottsdale and Chandler AZ, National Gallery of Art and Catholic University in Washington, DC, 1st Congregational Church in Los Angeles, Philharmonic Hall in Poznan, Poland, and many others. He has per-formed at various music festivals, such as Aspen, Ventura, Music in the Moun-tains, Redlands Bowl festivals in the USA and Credomatic Festival in Costa Rica, and worked with well-known con-ductors Pierre Boulez, Mehli Mehta, Gordon Johnson, John Farrer, Mischa Semanitzky, Patrick Flynn, among others. Mr. Gliadkovsky’s popularity is also fast growing being a featured artist in numerous live TV and radio broadcasts and programs on such networks as NPR, CBS, PBS, CBC, WQXR, KBYU, KPAC, Russian State TV and Radio and others. He has recorded six CDs for Alexei Records and for CMK Classics labels.

Tickets are $12 general; $10 se-niors; $7 students; 2 for 1 for music teachers with a MTAC or CAPMT ID. Saddleback College is located at 28000 Marguerite Parkway in Mis-sion Viejo, just east of Interstate 5 at the Avery Parkway exit. Free parking is available in Lot 12. Sawdust Art Festival is proud to announce Sawdust Studio Art Classes jewelry instructor, David Farris, was recently awarded winner of the Arts Jewelry Magazine Facebook Design Challenge. The design challenge was themed, “Float,” and Farris created a unique ring using sterling silver. The sides were stamped, textured and oxidized, and the top was set with a piece of white seaglass, secured by three bezel set cabochon stones of topaz, peridot and tourmaline. Art Jewelry Magazine presents “today’s most unique and distinctive jewelry,” and “showcases a wide variety of materials including wire, metal, metal clay, gemstones, and other media.” Farris is honored to have his piece chosen as the winning jewelry work for this monthly design challenge.

The winner of the Arts Jewelry design challenges has the opportunity to choose the next month’s contest theme. Farris chose “Compass” for the new theme, as the idea coincides with a project he will be working on this year, in which he will be creating a new piece each week inspired by the theme. His plan is to have 52 very interesting variations related to “Compass” by the end of 2012. Should his plan carry out successfully, the ambitious jeweler will pick a new theme for 2013 and begin work on a new series of jewelry designs. Farris had been considering for some time this theme-inspired jewelry series and this recently won challenge was the perfect kick-start to his concept coming to fruition.

Farris is a local artist and jewelry designer. He studied fine art and jewelry design at Orange Coast College and received a Bachelors in Fine Arts in Three-dimensional Media from Cal State Long Beach. Farris also earned his Gemology Certification from Gemological Institute of America. Farris has been a Sawdust Studio Art Classes instructor since the art class program launched in October of 2010. The Sawdust Art Festival is proud to offer year-round classes taught by such a high caliber of instructors. To check out the Sawdust Studio Art Classes schedule, visit www.SawdustStudioArtClasses.com or call 949-494-3030. Segerstrom Center for the Arts presents the Southern California debut of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo February 9 – 12, under the Presidency of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover. The company will perform a sophisticated interpretation of one of the world’s most romantic fairytales, Cinder-ella, choreographed by the company’s visionary artistic director Jean-Christophe Maillot to the classic score by Sergei Prokofiev. La Croix called Maillot’s Cinderella “poetic and expressive.” The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review pronounced it “brilliant.” Maillot and his dancers capture the hearts of their audience.

In honor of this exclusive West Coast engage-ment, the Consulate General of Monaco and the Monaco Government Tourist Office in collabora-tion with the Princess Grace Foundation-USA will host a weeklong fairytale celebration inviting all to experience the sublime culture of the Principality. In addition to the performances of Cinderella in Segerstrom Hall, highlights of the week include Monégasque-inspired menus at local restaurants, a luxury raffle for a chance to win the trip of a lifetime to Monaco, a not-to-be-missed exhibit in South Coast Plaza’s Jewel Court showcasing Monaco’s unique cultural heritage and Princess Grace’s exceptional contribution to the arts through photos, videos, ballet artifacts and more. For more information about ‘Monaco takes Orange County,’ visit MonacoTakesUS.com.

Tickets to performances of Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo start at $13.60 and are now available online at SCFTA.org, by calling (714) 556-2787 and at the Box Office at 600 Town Center Drive

in Costa Mesa. For inquiries about group ticket discounts, call the Group Services office at (714) 755-0236. The TTY number is (714) 556-2746. Free Preview Talks will be conducted one hour prior to each performance. Artists and program are subject to change.

One of Europe’s most acclaimed ballet companies, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo has developed a unique style that is as classical as it is contem-porary. It is this blended technique that is on brilliant display in his elegant and whimsical production of Cinderella. Along with his inspired choreography, the production is by Ernest Pignon-Ernest with costumes by Jérôme Kaplan and light by Dominique Drillot. It was first seen at the Salle Garnier, Monte-Carlo Opera in April 1999.

Jean-Christophe Maillot was ap-pointed Artistic Director-Choreog-rapher of Les Ballets de Mon-te-Carlo by H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover in September 1993. His tak-ing over as director of 50 dancers has taken the company on a new path and has rapidly developed the level of maturity and excellence that is indicative of the company today. His personal inward quest is the origin of the new language that enables him to handle the great classics as well as to establish his mark in the world of abstraction, an artistic approach that has been praised throughout

the international press. In 2002, his production, La Belle, received the Nijinsky Award for best choreo-graphic production of 2001 at the Monaco Dance Forum and the Danza & Danza Prize for the best show. He was awarded the Choreographer’s Prize from the Italian critics at the Benois de la Dance ceremony at the Bolshoi Theatre for his production of Faust created in Monaco.

NEGU GALA BENEFITS DREAMS OF 12 YEAR OLD

When writing about society events, most the time they are written about those that have already past. Words are written about the amazing food, fabulous people, the décor, glitzy gowns and of course, the money that is raised, all in the name of charity. These charities work very hard through-out the year to plan these events, so this column dedicated to that work, is heartwarming to say the least.

This week’s column will concentrate on a charity that needs your help as it was started by a 12 year old girl who battled two inoperable brain tumors and lost that battle a few weeks ago; however, the event will and must go on.

You might have heard about her as her and her foundation has been getting world-wide press since her passing. Her Facebook page had garnered over 70,000 “likes” in a 24 hour period and the day after her death, her website was visited so much it crashed the server.

This 12 year old girl is Jessie Rees. Her and her parents started The NEGU Foundation™; NEGU, which stands for Never Ever Give Up. It’s the motto and message of Jessie. NEGU is a nonprofit organization to raise awareness of pediatric cancer, support sufferers and raise money for research. Jessie’s wish was to deliver the NEGU message to every kid fighting cancer in the United States so they can stay strong and never ever give up. The NEGU Foundation™ is all about “encourage-care” for patients and their parents so no one stands alone.

Her dream continues as the first annual NEGU Gala will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 at St. Regis Monarch Beach. This special evening of dining, drinks, dancing, and a special concert with John Tesh is all about raising awareness and support so The NEGU Foundation™ can carry on Jessie’s dream and continue to encourage and care for courageous kids fighting cancer. There are over 50,000 in active treatment and they need encouragement, hope, joy and love.

Ten months ago, Jessie was a normal seventh grader living in Southern California. After her diagnosis, she became nationally recognized as she blogged her fight against the disease. After her death, she brought thousands to her Facebook page, all in support and prayers for her and her family. She wanted one “like” for each of the estimated 50,000 American children with cancer but instead received almost 120,000 from all over the world as of this date.

While some of her posts discussed her struggles as she underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments, others urged readers in dozens of countries to support pediatric cancer research and to pray for other children with the illness. She always signed her posts with the acronym “NEGU” (NEE’-goo).

Jessie also thought about what she could do for kids who are hospitalized or fighting serious medical conditions, so she came up with “JoyJars”. Jars filled with just about anything to brighten the day for those who receive them. The foundation sold and has provided thousands of “JoyJars” stuffed with candy and toys to sick children. More than 3,000 were sold and distributed in 27 states last year, according to the NEGU website.

The event Saturday is part of many fundraisers for this nonprofit that will help carry on the dream of this little girl. If you are a John Tesh Fan or if you just want to go support this non-profit by attending, please do so. It will be something to remember for a long time.

For more information about the NEGU Gala, please visit www.NEGU.org. Tickets and tables are still available.

White or BrightFashion loves contrasts. And while white has never been hotter, bright colours

makes a bold comeback. Go white from head to toe, even when going formal, and yes white shoes are allowed. Jackets and shirts in band collar styles spell smart casual and are great for weekend wear. Just remember to keep the propor-tion of white balanced; Canali, D&G and Ermenegildo Zegna are the designers to look to for the right statement. Another great option for the weekend are the brights, and Ashish Soni’s collection epitomises the look with a punch of citrus hues. But remember to mix and match your brights with some sober neutrals. Opt for classics like an Herme¨s orange silk tie or Paul Smith’s stripped coloured socks. These add that zing and zaniness to your look. Fresh and fun.

Double troubleSmoking jackets are en vogue, while next season you see another classic

making a comeback-the doublebreasted jacket. Having made a mark at fashion weeks after a long hiatus, Gucci, Prada, and Roberto Cavalli all went strong

on this trend. And every man must have one of these in their wardrobe for daytime dress-ing. As a rule, double breasted jackets look bet-ter on broader men. So if you are slim and still want to imbibe the retro feel t ha t f ash ion has in 2012, try a three button jacket; it’s very Cary Grant.

Get ShortySince fash-

ion seems to be in a flirta-

tious mood, we foresee lots of plays on lengths in both men’s and women’s wear at the fashion weeks in 2012. For men, this means shorter jackets and cropped trousers will take centre stage. But this is a tricky trend. “Not all men can wear cropped trousers, but with longer kurtas and sherwanis, they look terrific and often elongate the leg,” suggests Tahiliani. Probably the most fashion forward trend of the year, it has a very cool, young feel, and is an interesting option for weekend dressing for men looking to be on the cutting edge of fashion. So feel free to break the norm and experiment.

Check playOf course it is not all about solids, and in summer, it’s always

fun to wear something printed. For working men, plaids are a great option. These are specialised checks, and consist of crossed horizontal and vertical bands in two or more colours in woven cloth. This season, there are large plaids and small plaids-seen at Gucci, Bottega Veneta, Louis Vuitton, and Jean Paul Gaultier. As a Scottish fabric, it has a feel of British eccentricity, yet is an acceptable pattern to wear in the workplace. Plaid shirts always look professional, and plaid suits in muted tones enhance that old-school look. Go with the classics, and you will never go wrong.

Women have plenty to be jealous of when it comes to men’s fashion. A few staples to fill the closet and most men will look polished and put together, even as the trend leans toward the casual look.

“Culturally we have moved toward being com-fortable,” said Kris Moody, owner of Well Suited, a men’s wear shop on Public Square.

It is hard not to see the prominence of business casual as the professional look of the new millen-nium. And many young men today often display the conflicting combination of the country club and night club.

Just as with the ladies, a few basic pieces build the foundation to a fine wardrobe. Then you can add some trendy pieces to update your look.

“We do mostly suits, and the trends for suits are still on the slim side,” Moody said. “We are seeing a lot of two-button jackets and double-breasted suits.”

The same styling has been popular for sports jackets.

Men’s fashion is cyclical, with trends tending to come around again, fade out and then come back. And this happens much slower than the rapid turnover of women’s fashion, which can vary season to season.

“This is actually better because you can invest in a suit and know you can wear it for several seasons,” Moody said.

When it comes to more casual looks, bright colors have been on-trend lately, as well as the

slimmer-fitting silhouette. For the majority of men, how-

ever, looking stylish is a priority more than being trendy. In this case, invest in a quality suit in a basic color such as navy, charcoal or black. Try a versatile-weight fabric as well so you can wear it in warmer and cooler temperatures. Lighter shades of camel, khaki or tan will also work, but the darker shades are more flexible for various situations — from dinners out, to the office, to a wedding.

“No matter what you choose, you want a suit to fit your body,” Moody said.

The same can be said of all men’s fashion. Although slimmer fits have been the rage, more athletic builds or even rounder physiques are not at all flattered by the tapered styling. Guys should opt for a good fit over fashion trends as looking your best is always stylish.

Apply this rule to buying casual pants and denim as well. Select a style that suits your shape and doesn’t add a lot of extra fabric that will bunch or look baggy, nor should you squeeze into skinnier sizes.

For the most part, common sense is key. If it isn’t comfortable, then you won’t look your best, confident self.

SUIT UP: MENSWEAR COMBINES CLASSIC AND CASUAL FOR COMFORTABLE STYLE

Over the past several decades we have watched the fashion trends for men’s pants evolve through extremes. The 1970’s brought us the bell-bottom style. While they were tight near the hips they compensated with flaring bottoms at the feet. The nine-ties brought us to the JNCO/Levi Pipes (yes they still exist) urban grunge baggy era. Somehow from there we entered the dark ages of the thigh-squishing skinny jeans. Pants so tight you can only wonder how they peeled those things on. It seemed as though we were doomed to live in this world forever. We can all breathe a sigh of relief because there is a new hero to save us from the dreaded skinny jeans: loosely tailored pants.

The relaxed cut of yesterday is not to be confused with the relaxed tailoring on the rise. Baggy loose-cut pants are nothing new (you can find them at any department store you frequent) so do not err. The key to catching this rising fashion trend is to make sure they are tailored. Although loose fitting clothing can often be seen as informal, they are not so loose that they are seen as street wear. To be sure you are in with this years loose fit trends remember these tell tale signs: Think tailored (through the thighs and hips). Pants should hang from just below the belt. Loose, not baggy. Pants piled up around the ankle looks sloppy and if the excess material gets walked on for too long it becomes frayed and looks even worse. Loosely tailored pants provide for comfort and produce a low-key attitude.

The Protégé Jean from AG Adriano is a good place to start if you want to be “dressed up or dressed down”. If you want to be even more casual but still look good J. Crew offers the Vintage slim-cut jean. For a night out, try Banana Republic’s Heritage slim straight-fit jeans with a tailored blazer.

With the first round of play at the 2012 Australian Open already completed, Tennis Now takes a step back and look at what all 128 men wore on the

courts. Some played it safe – and disappointed us -- with traditional attire. Fortunately, there were others who played with color and patterns as they put together outfits for the year’s first major. Below are our notes for which ATP players brought their summer best to Melbourne.

2012 MEN’S TENNIS FASHION ROUNDUP

Adidas: The blue courts of Melbourne Park are the perfect complement to bright colors on player kits. Surprisingly, only adidas takes advantage of this backdrop with the vibrant reds and yellows of their adizero line; the com-pany’s three-stripe logo (on the sleeves) and some graphic detail along the bottom of the shirt break up the solid colors. (Seen on: Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Fernando Verdasco.)

Yonex: Yonex gave Lleyton Hewitt a little push in adding an orange geo-metric pattern to the back of his red crew. Albeit somewhat derivative – both Nike and adidas have shown great designs with embellished back panels in years past – this Yonex shirt is a refreshing change from the staid offerings of this Japanese brand.

Topper: Longtime Yonexer David Nalbandian has switched over to the South American brand Topper. The Argentine wore a white crew embellished with multi-colored zig-zags; it might appear Charlie Brown-esque to some, but we found the print a novel way of adding color to a plain tee.

Wilson: Since debuting a revamped apparel collection at the 2010 U.S. Open, Wilson has consistently produced well-designed clothes for both the men and women on its roster. Feliciano Lopez, Philipp Kohlschreiber, and Jarkko Nieminen are all wearing a crew that combines color blocking in the front (red, white, and blue) with a racing stripe theme in the back; the two seemingly disparate concepts come together to give the fans something to view from all parts of the court.
