Meet Tim Osborn. He is the individual at Gulf Stream Aircraft who recently retired from the position as liaison between their cabinet shop, the engineering/design group and customers. Tim’s woodworking skills were inspired by his father through whom he got his love of working with his hands. Tim’s father built the home that Tim was raised in. After three years in college, Tim realized he wanted to work with wood to make a living. He worked in the Aerospace industry as a pattern maker and worked his way up to manager of the pattern shop and aluminum foundry. In the mid 80s, the company he worked for changed direction and Tim decided to look for something new. He was hired by Gulfstream to built and installed furniture in aircraft. He worked his way up to lead man and supervised a crew of 10 people. He was responsible for 2-3 aircraft at different stages of construction every 6 months. Eventually he became foreman of the cabinet shop and most recently held the position of coordinating projects between the cabinet shop, engineering/design and clients. Tim will talk about the construction and challenges of aircraft interior construction. It promises to be a unique and interesting presentation about the manufacture of the interior of a luxury aircraft very few of us have ever seen up close or been inside of. Please join us! January Raffle Bill Kohr from Craftsman Studios gave us his usual special deal on a Lie-Nielsen chisel plane and Tool Depot and Rockler Woodworkers Store have continued to help us keep our raffle selection so good. Be sure to patronize our Resource Sponsors and thank them when you are in their store. It wouldn’t work without them. A Porter-Cable 693 plunge/Standard router kit has been in every raffle for several years. Porter Cable has modified it and made it more expensive, so I’ve decided to switch to the Bosch version. I think you will like it better. Take a look at the Mini-lathe. It comes with hardware for six pen sets. Here’s what you will see on the table this month: 1. Compressor and Brad Nailer Kit Portable and good for a small shop 2. Three saw Blades and a giant Drill-bit set Lots of jobs for these 3. Bosch 1617 Plunge/Standard Router Kit We have to have this tool! 4. Freud Deluxe Dado Blade Set For smooth, high quality dadoes 5. Lie-Nielsen Small Chisel Plane Speaks for itself. I love mine. 6. Mini-Lathe from Rockler Extensions are available. A great small lathe. 7. A BUCKETFUL of Tools Wood, Et Cetera and bric-a-brac Tickets go on sale at 6:30. Every Penny goes for prizes. Compare that to the odds on any other raffle you know of. You missed some wonderful deals if you missed the November Old Tool swapmeet in the Rockler parking lot. More buyers and sellers than we have ever had. Mark the next one on your calendar for April Fool’s Day, the first Sunday in April.

The Design In Wood show planning is already underway. The theme this year is “Salute to Heroes”. The fair

will run Friday, June 8 to Wednesday, July 4. Fair planning meetings are the first Saturday of the month. See Bob Stevenson’s write-up for details.

There are a couple of events coming up. Woodworks returns to the Ontario Convention center February 23 –

Get details on line at http://www.woodworksevents.com/ontario.shtml. We may have a booth there if enough people are willing to sign up for booth duty. Spend some time in the booth for a free pass to the show. If you are willing to volunteer, email me at [email protected].

The PAST meeting is January 19 – 20 and the parking lot sale is Thursday morning January 18th. The parking

lot sale is open to everyone and there are many bargains. See details at www.pasttools.org See you at the meeting. Start working on your Design In Wood entries and bring something for the brag table.

Shop Tour The shop tours held in 2006 ran the gamut from a meek, extremely well organized, 220sf shop, to a 1700sf shop, complete with a second floor stained glass studio. Most, if not all of the shops had at least one thing in common – they are all privately owned by individuals, the next shop we’ll visit is not. It is a group workshop for

THE CALIFORNIA VETERANS HOME CHULA VISTA

9am February 10th 2007 To kick off 2007, we will be visiting a shop that was designed and built with more than just equipment placement, dust extraction and outlet location in mind. It had to meet the needs of an older group (average age is 75) AND comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Who better to head up a project like that than a retired shop teacher with 30+ years of experience? Robert Deason, built and supervised the job over a two year period with assistance from some of his of his friends. Robert said “I had to do some creative hacking to accommodate my disabled friends, some of whom helped me build it.” So come out to see their shop, have some coffee and donuts and enjoy our first tour of 2007. January Membership Report

As of 31 December 2006 there were 1498 members of the Association. Spouses with member cards number 40% of the membership. On 5 January 2007, 400 members were currently paid up for at least this year. By the time you read this I expect this number to be much larger. I encourage all others to renew their membership promptly in order to keep active their benefits: discounts at our resource firms, access to the video library and, for most of you, printed newsletters. You can obtain an application form from our website or from this newsletter. Beginning 1 January we are maintaining membership files in database form (Microsoft Access) and closing out the spreadsheet (MS Excel) record form. It will be easier to extract needed information from this latest system in any desired form and the creation and update of individual entries is simpler.

Stepping Up in a Time of Need

In 1973, Gerald R. Ford was chosen by Nixon to replace Agnew as Vice President of the U. S. in a time of national trouble. Eight months later he became President when Nixon resigned. Mr. Ford had 25 years of experience in the Congress behind him when he took the job. In this article I would like to share with you a gentleman who stepped up in a time of need in our association. His name is Ray McNamara. In the fall of 1989, Ray filled in as president for Del Longaneeker who became terminally ill. He brought with him years of experience as a senior engineer at General Dynamics; and many years of service to the association. He was on the steering committee when the group was formed and served on the board in all positions except president. In January of 1990, Ray was elected as President and served for three years. The following are excerpts from his President’s newsletter messages. In 1991, Ray was asked by a major woodworking magazine why he thought our association was so successful. His response was: “We have a large number of enthusiastic people in this association who are willing to share their skills and ideas with others. We attempt to listen to and involve people at all skill levels, and we try to have variety in our programs at the general meetings. We also reach out into the community with our Chair and Toy Programs”. In his September 1991 newsletter message, he spoke of how our association can help the community at large with outreach programs. Many of our members became involved in such projects as the restoring of old rail cars for the Railroad Museum at Campo; the restoration of a courthouse in the Heritage Park area of Old Town; and the construction of doors and windows, tables and chairs for a Tijuana preschool designed by James Hubbell. Ray has always been a strong supporter of the “Design in Wood” show at the Del Mar Fair. In 1992, Ray wrote that the “Design in Wood” show won a first place award in the “New Competitive” exhibit category for the Western Fair Association. This was a significant award, and the show was cited as an excellent example that other Fairs may wish to follow. During his tenure as President, the model builders and the wood-turners were also added to the show. Making the “Design in Wood” show one of the largest displays of all types of woodworking in the country. Ray has also exhibited many of his fine woodworking pieces over the years at the show. He also made the layout drawings for the chair that the association builds in the chair program each year. I have worked with Ray for many years with the association and through the outreach programs. The last project we worked on was helping a friend rebuild his shop that was destroyed by the fires three years ago. Ray thank you for stepping up in a time of need. The association has gained from your time and talent from the beginning. Chuck Meacham: Historian
