100th Birthday Celebration Back in April, we received a call from a delightful lady who

was planning a 100th birthday celebration for her mother on

June 22nd. She asked if we could provide a couple of Model

A’s for the special day, to give her mother and some family

members a ride. The celebration was to be held at the Bay-

view Restaurant on the Marine Core Recruit Depot, which

islocated right across the West Basin from Liberty Sta-

tion. When Fred Crone and Dave Francis arrived with their

1930 A’s, they were told that the cars were a surprise for the

birthday girl, and they would be leading a short birthday pa-

rade on the base. Over 100 guests awaited the arrival of the

    centenarian, who was greeted

    with signs commemorating

the day, and of course the

    A’s. She was overjoyed to

see the cars, and with a little

    assistance was soon in the

    backseat of Fred’s Town Se-

    dan along with a lifelong

    friend and great granddaugh-

    ter. Other family members

    joined in by climbing into

Dave’s rumble seat, and a ninety year old cousin had so much

fun he asked for photos behind the wheel. The gracious birth-

day girl thanked us profusely for her special ride and the

    daughter who had

    originally contacted

us said that it was the

    highlight of the cele-

    bration. What a

    wonderful memory

    for the guests, the

    drivers and of course

    the guest of honor!

  • TOURS COORDINATORS: Arlyn & Nayola Bieber

What a great turnout to Hansen’s Ranch on June 22. Upon

arrival members checked out the garden and Era Gas Station

Bill constructed complete with a 1929 Model A Pickup parked

by the gasoline pump waiting for the attendant to fill the gas

tank, check the oil and water level, air the tires and then wash the windshield (no

filling your own tank like today). Waiting in line for a fill-up or maybe just a dollar’s

worth, was an early 1930 Model AA Flatbed Truck. The gasoline price on the pump

was 18.5 cents per gallon which meant a fill-up would cost less than $2.00 or much

less than we pay for one gallon today!!

At the garage members enjoyed the demonstrations and explanations of how brakes are restored to their

original condition. A complete brake job is more than just replacing the brake shoes. The braking system is

very complex and to bring the 90-year-old system back to its original condition, is very labor intensive. Thanks

to Bill for sharing his expertise. After the brake seminar the guys retired to the front field to view

Bill’s assortment of “hit and miss” engines including the running of an 8

hp engine. This huge machine was a work horse in its day before elec-

tricity was common place on the farm. Several members took turns

driving the two old Farmall tractors and reminisced about the days

spent on the farm plowing the fields.

The ladies enjoyed viewing an assortment

of many Era accessories which included

purses, hats, gloves and even an interest-

    ing man’s match holder.

The highlight of the day was the lunch of pulled

pork and chicken prepared on the grill by Bill

and Walter, served with coleslaw and other sal-

ads and desserts brought by members. Every-

one enjoyed the fellowship and certainly did not

leave hungry! Thank you Bill and Sue for your

    hospitality!!!

READ ALL ABOUT THE CAMP OUT PORTION OF THE WEEKEND & Upcoming tours on the next page!

  • Tour’s continued. . . TIN CAN TOURISTS, 2019

The weekend of June 21-23, ten couples signed up for a two-day

camping trip at Dos Picos Park, quite close to Hansen’s Garage,

and tying in with our club visit to Hansen’s on June 22 (covered

elsewhere in this issue). In the spirit of the Tin Can Tourists who

preceded us back in the 20’s and 30’s (but without our Model A’s

this time), we braved the elements, which were very mild and

pleasant, and enjoyed two days of fellowship and the outdoors.

The nights were mild, the days were not too hot, and the campfires

in the evening were enjoyed by all. Some pitched tents, some came

in RV’s, some only for one night and some for both. Saturday

    night’s communal

dinner was out of cans, but was enjoyed anyway. Thank you to my

wife Gene, JoBeth Stelzer, Valarie Basham, and my son Alex and his

friend Amber for helping prepare and serve dinner. Breakfast was in a

very comfortable pavilion, and a big thank you to Gene, JoBeth Stel-

zer and Betsy Johnson for their timely assistance, and to Alex and

Amber for helping with cleanup. I picked up my Model A from Han-

sen’s on Saturday and brought it to the campground, so there was one

Model A there anyway. From the reports I’ve seen, everyone had a

good time, and there is talk of doing this again next year.

UPCOMING TOURS: On Sunday, July 14, is the annual Eastlake Village Walk Car Display and Tour. Meet at the shopping center at Sweetwater Rd. and Jamacha Blvd. for a 4:00pm departure. The display is from 5:00 to 7:00pm.

This event will count as mileage for both a tour and a car display event and will earn $200 for the club (if we have 15

cars or more). So please come! Fred Crone will lead the group from the meeting place to the mall. It is a fairly long,

back road run and really is a "mini-tour".

TOUR to Veteran’s Museum and Cruise through Balboa Park – Saturday August 17th Formerly the San Diego Naval Hospital

Chapel at Inspiration Point in Balboa

Park, the museum holds special signifi-

cance for those who have lived and

worked in our military town. In 1989,

the museum was chartered to honor,

host, display and educate veterans and

their families. We have coordinated a docent tour of the Veteran’s Mu-

seum, to be followed by a cruise through Balboa Park and the El Prado

Complex and over the Cabrillo Bridge. (We would like to see Model A’s

on the Prado again, just like this photo from 1938.) Afterwards, we will

host a picnic lunch at our favorite grassy area behind the Air & Space Mu-

seum. Hope you can join us! Organized by Dave & Kris Francis.

September 21 is International Model A Day. We had so much fun last year; we’re going to do it again at the

Crown Pointe Clubhouse. There will be a new route to drive your Model A in the neighborhood (prizes

awarded this year), make your own pizza and participate in Hubley races. You still have time to purchase a

Hubley. Contact club member Jack Simmons at [email protected] or 619-997-3013.

  • TECHNICAL TALK with Dave Francis “Camshaft to Crankshaft Gear Alignment”

Hello everyone! During a recent technical seminar we encountered a bit of an issue in timing the

member’s engine. This experience, which I will touch on a bit later, provided me with the inspi-

ration for this article on camshaft to crankshaft gear alignment. However, before we jump into

the subject, it might be helpful to provide some general information on the camshaft itself.

I believe somewhere I’ve heard the camshaft described as the “brains” of the engine, and I think

that is a pretty accurate assessment. Although camshaft function and location does vary a bit depending upon the engine design

in which it is / they are installed, the common primary function during engine operation is to open and close the intake and ex-

haust valves in precise harmony with the position of the piston in their respective cylinders. Additionally, such as in the

Model A engine, the camshaft drives the oil pump and the distributor. To attain the aforementioned “precise harmony” be-

tween the pistons and the valves, the camshaft is driven (rotated) off the engine crankshaft through either gears (Model A con-

figuration), a chain, or a belt. The camshaft drive mechanism is again dependent on engine design, but the fundamental design

objective is to maintain a precise rotational relationship between the camshaft and the crankshaft. If camshaft drive mechanism

failure occurs (i.e. broken gear, chain or belt) this precise relationship is compromised, and the engine will either not run at all,

or run very poorly. Worse yet, on the newer cars you may have heard of instances of severe engine damage occurring (this is a

result of the valves contacting the pistons) when a camshaft timing belt breaks. Again, this is related to the engine design of the

particular manufacturer. In some cases of timing belt failure the engine will just quit, in other cases the results are catastrophic.

On our Model A’s if the timing gear(s) fail, the camshaft stops turning, the distributor stops turning, no spark is distributed to

the spark plugs, and the engine quits with generally no associated secondary damage. Replacement of the offending camshaft

gear(s) will generally get the vehicle back on the road, but in the course of this procedure re-alignment of the camshaft to the

crankshaft is a critical step in the process, and as such is the focus of the following article from the Ford Garage.

Before we move into the camshaft to crankshaft gear alignment discussion, I

believe the following diagram (Fig. 1) will provide further clarification on the

camshaft topic. With respect to the camshaft, camshaft gear drive, tappets

(push rods in Ford nomenclature) and valve installations, it’s actually pretty

representative of one Model A engine cylinder. If you look closely at the lobes

on the camshaft, you’ll notice that they have a high point (peak) and a low

point (heal). As the camshaft is rotated by the crankshaft during engine opera-

tion, the “peak” of the lobe moves into contact with the base of the tappet,

opening its respective valve (intake or exhaust) at the appropriate time. As the

camshaft continues to rotate, the peak of the lobe moves past the tappet and the

valve is closed by the valve spring; the cycle then continues on to the other

valve and so on as the engine continues to run (we hope!).

As previously noted, the alignment of the camshaft and crankshaft gears is a

critical step in the gear replacement procedure. The following Ford Garage

article authored by Vince Falter details the gear alignment procedure.

MODEL A & B - Camshaft to Crankshaft Gear Alignment

“The illustration (Figure 2) below shows the relationship of the engine camshaft and crankshaft gear mesh. The proper mesh

of the gears assures that the valve opening and closing is properly timed to the crankshaft and piston

    position.

The crankshaft and camshaft timing gears are common and interchangeable between both the Model

A and Model B engines. The proper mesh of the two timing gears assures proper relationships be-

    tween the valves and pistons.

The camshaft gear has a dimple machined in the outer periphery. This dimple has two purposes:

    1. It is used to indicate proper mesh alignment with the crankshaft gear.

    2. It is used together with the timing pin and the hole in the timing gear cover to properly locate the

Number 1 piston at top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke for setting the spark

    ignition timing in the distributor.

The camshaft gear can only be assembled to the camshaft in one position. The two locating dowels are slightly offset to each

other to prevent improper gear installtion on the camshaft. The camshaft gear has 50 helical cut teeth, and rotates at half the

    engine speed.

The crankshaft gear can also only be assembled to the crankshaft in one position. The locating keyway establishes the rela-

tionship of the gear to the crankshaft. The crankshaft gear has 25 helical cut teeth and rotates at engine speed.

    Figure 2

  • TECHNICAL TALK continued…. “Camshaft to Crankshaft Gear Alignment”

The crankshaft gear alignment tooth is the first tooth to the right of the crankshaft keyway

centerline, as shown in red in the illustration above.

Original Ford crankshaft gears had a ‘Ford’ script timing mark centered on the tooth used

to align to the camshaft gear. Most replacement crankshaft gears (Figure 3) have a circle,

indentation, or similar mark on the alignment tooth.

When properly meshed, the timing mark on the

crankshaft gear will directly align with the dimple

    on the camshaft gear.

NOTE: When the two alignment marks are

meshed as shown in the illustration above, the

proper gear alignment is assured. It does not indicate TDC at that position.

The timing pin and timing gear cover must be used to locate the Model A initial igni-

tion timing point of Number 1 piston at 0 degrees (TDC) when using a Model A tim-

    ing cover (Figure 4).

In the course of researching this topic, I discovered a good YouTube video that details the replacement of the camshaft timing

gear. In this particular case the gear had not failed but the condition of the existing gear was unknown, therefore the owner

elected to replace the gear as a precautionary measure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNWshnStjCc

I almost forgot, the issue we encountered in timing the member’s car was that the machined dimple in the camshaft timing gear

was not very deep (which I’ve been told is pretty typical on aftermarket camshaft timing gears). Consequently, Number 1 TDC

was a bit difficult to precisely locate. It took a couple of tries before we finally hit it. Arlyn informed me that at Hansen’s Ga-

rage they enlarge the timing gear dimple as a matter of course when replacing the camshaft timing gear. This action provides a

well-defined seat for the timing pin for subsequent engine timing.

If the service history of your camshaft timing gear is unknown, proactive replacement of the gear might be a good thing to con-

    sider. Happy motoring!

    Sunshine & Raindrops

Jack Beasley is doing as well as can be expected following the rather sudden death

of Helen. At Helen’s request there will be no services. Jack will be moving to

Temecula, to live with his son. His new address will be 30247 Silver Ridge Ct.,

Temecula, CA. 92591. Cell phone: 619-985-1277 He is trying to stay busy and looking

forward to getting his Model out on the road with it’s brand new engine.

Cathy Rising is recovering after a fall back in May, aka she tripped over the dog landing on the hard floor. She

broke her left shoulder and her left knee cap. To say the least it was very painful. She was sent from the ER to

rehab for a while, but is now home. The shoulder is mobile again, and she can use that left arm,

But the knee is still in a brace. They are hoping to be at the July meeting.

Judy Hall, Valarie’s mom, passed away June 5th, Judy loved traveling in the Model A and the club members

always made her feel so welcome. Thank you everyone for the many cards, phone calls, emails, etc. it was over

whelming. Mom lived 97 amazing years and will be missed but she was ready to go home.

There will be a celebration of life later this summer.

If you know of a club member who is under the weather, please let Kris know, she will send a card

Contact: Kris Francis (619) 966-9040 or email: [email protected]

MYSTERY PART: Identify this Model A part and send an email to Dave Francis at: [email protected] with your answer or educated guess.

Your answer may be the part name or an accurate description. The names of

those who correctly identify the part will be placed in a box for a drawing at

the next meeting. Remember you must also attend the meeting to receive

    the $10 award. Good luck!

  • SEMINAR PHASE II

Phase II of the Beasley’s Technical Seminar was held at Jack & Helen

    Beasley’s home on

    Saturday, May

    25th. Many talented

    club members

    worked in tandem

    installing Jack’s

    new engine in their

    1929 Cabriolet,

    with members

    working inside, out-

    side, and under the

    car to get every-

    thing hooked up

    and ready to

    run. After a back-

    fire or two and

some additional tweaking, the engine came to life and sounded strong. We

hope to see Jack and Helen back on tours & parades with us again

soon! Those participating in the engine installation were Arlyn Bieber, Reen

Kotas, Steve Lovell, Paul Winchester, Ron Engen, Stan Boyer, Jim Tabor and

    Dave Francis.

Many thanks to Helen and Jack for their hospitality and delicious lunch!

2019 Lantern Crest Car Show by Bill Corson

There were about a dozen Model A’s and a right hand drive almost Model A assembled for the

tour to the ever-expanding Lantern Crest assisted living facility. We were treated to jumbo

grilled hot dogs and beverages while listening to a mostly country music band. I found par-

ticular delight in watching the really senior citizens line dancing, (some in sort of slow mo-

tion). It reminded me of a story I heard about a 90 year old gent who got married to his 87

years of age sweetheart. They requested being transported in a 1930 Model A sedan like the

one he had as a youngster. They spent their honeymoon getting out of the car.

As for assisted living places, my wife has several on her smart phone speed dial. I wonder if

she is trying to tell me something?

Editor’s Note: A few of our own members were caught checking for light leaks

around their eye lids. Or they were exhausted from watching the line dancers.

My father like to say, if you have a clear conscience you can fall asleep anywhere.

    1928 ERA FASHIONS 1930

We have no fashion coordinator this year and I’m sorry I don’t have pictures of some of the items the ladies

brought to share during our Fashion Seminar at the Hansen’s Ranch in Ramona on June 22. There were the usual

fashion accessories purses, hats, gloves, compacts, some which had family history attached to them. JoBeth found a

metal contain that came apart in the middle and was shaped like an apple. After some research it was discovered the

apple shape contain originally came with candy inside. When empty you could put a ball of string inside and pull the

string out through a hole provided in the top of the apple, where a stem once was. Pretty ingenious, things were not

throw out, they were repurposed. Thank you Nayola for planning this seminar in conjunction with the guys seminar

on brakes. It was a lovely country style day with good friends, good food and old fashion fun on the farm.
