PRESIDENT’S REPORT: Stan Boyer
Congratulations to Valarie Basham for receiving an award certificate from MARC
(Model A Restorers Club) for “Continued Excellence” in 2018 and 2019 as Editor of our
newsletter, the Quail Call. The newsletter meets all the standards required by MARC. I
had several of our members come up to me after our May business meeting to tell me what
a great newsletter we have and what a good job Valarie is doing and has done in the past.
Way to go Valarie!
Thank you, Patty Win-
chester, for arranging to
have the members who
brought treats that night to also bring a picture of
their mothers. What a thoughtful idea to help
celebrate Mother’s Day. Also, thanks to all who
brought treats.
A good job goes to Arlyn Bieber for standing in
for Dave Francis (Technical) and Ed Poffenberger
for standing in for Dave & Kris Francis (Ways and Means). I don’t want to forget JoBeth Stelzer for taking Nancy
Lovell’s place while she was at her mom’s bedside as well as Chris and Julie Halter for Membership. I hope I haven’t
missed anyone else. Quite a few people have stepped forward to help others in our club which is a large part of what
we do for one another.
Nice job, Ross and Sue Piper, for volunteering and leading the tour to “Shotgun Tom Kelly’s” house, HO railroad
setup and memorabilia collection. A big thank you to Shotgun Tom for having us!
Judy and I hope to see you at the June 14th business meeting, if not sooner.

SHOTGUN TOM KELLY TOUR
We were graced with perfect weather for our May 4th tour to visit Shotgun Tom Kelly’s new
HO Scale model railroad and view his amazing collection of memorabilia from his illustrious
radio and TV career. Stories and fond memories were shared by Shotgun and club members
bringing smiles and laughter to all in attendance. A special highlight of the day was the countdown and lighting up of
the top 6 feet of the original KCBQ radio tower now installed in Shotgun’s backyard. And yes, he still wears his sig-
nature ranger hat!
Shotgun Tom and his friend Mike, a KUSI
camera man, joined 26 club members for
lunch at Phil’s Barbeque in Santee. The
food and service were excellent and the
conversation lively and fun. Valarie Ba-
sham chauffeured Shotgun and Mike to
Phil’s in her Sport Coupe. The gentlemen
took turns riding in the rumble seat!
Ross made a lovely plaque which was given to
Shot Gun before we headed off to lunch.

UPCOMING PARADES AND DISPLAY:
Saturday, June 1, is the La Mesa Flag Day Parade. We will probably meet at the old Coco's site on Lake Murray
Blvd. I need to check this out to see if it will work as a meeting site. Depart at 8:30 a.m. Parade starts at 10:00.
The Lantern Crest senior living display is on Sat, June 8th. We will meet at the Target in El Cajon for a 9:00 a.m.
departure. Display at 10:00 to 1:00 pm. This event earns $200 for our club.
Saturday, June 1, was the La Mesa Flag Day parade, and Saturday, June 8, was the Lantern Crest
display. More details on these events next time.
Saturday, June 15, is the Terrace Gardens (senior living) display in Escondido. We will meet at the IHOP on
Miramar Rd. and the I-15 for a 10:00 a.m. departure. Show is from 11:00 to 1:00. So far we have 4 cars signed up
for this event. It would be good if we had at least a couple more. This event will earn the club $100.
On Thursday, July 4th, are our traditional two parades - Scripps Ranch and then Mira Mesa. We will meet at the
IHOP on Miramar Rd. at the I-15 for an 8:15 a.m. departure to Scripps Ranch. After that parade we will go over to
the Mira Mesa parade. These are usually well attended events. So far we have 10 cars signed up.
On Saturday, July 6, is the Descanso parade. We will meet at the Target parking lot on Broadway in El Cajon for
a 7:15 a.m. departure (this is an early one). Parade starts at 9:00 a.m. So far we have 5
cars signed up.
On Sunday, July 14, is the annual Eastlake Village Walk car display. We will meet at the shopping center at
Sweetwater Rd. and Jamacha Blvd. for a 4:00 p.m. departure. The display is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. This will earn
$200 for the club. - but we do need 15 cars. This event will count as mileage for both a tour and a car display
event. The drive from the meeting place to the mall is a fairly long, back road run and really is a "mini-tour".
Please sign up for this one. IT’S DEFINITELY OUR BUSY PARADE/DISPLAY SEASON!
TECHNICAL TALK with Dave Francis
“A-9020 Gas/Cowl Tank Filler Screen Assembly”
Hello everyone! I recently received an inquiry from a club member regarding the gas tank filler
screen assembly. I realized that while I was aware of its existence I really didn’t know much
about this part. In further researching the subject, I came across an excellent article authored by
Steve Plucker that was previously published in the Model A News. Steve’s article is very de-
tailed, and I’ve taken the liberty of extracting some of the article’s key points in order to provide
a bit more of a general overview.
The referenced “dates” represent the Parts Release (PR) date and do not necessarily represent the production date as it took a
few days to get to get the newly drawn part off of the drawing boards, into production and out to the assembly plants which
may have taken from 1 week to several depending on just how long it took and just how far the part had to go. Sometimes
many parts were put into production long after they were drawn by the engineering department. Then again there were some
parts that never made it into production. Always refer to the MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards
for actual production dates and applications when restoring your car or truck.
As the Model A Ford came into production, one of the items that Ford included in the fuel section of the Part Price List’s, and
a “must” in every Model A Ford car and truck, was the A-9020 Gas/Cowl Tank Filler Screen Assembly.
The A-9020 Gasoline Tank Filler Screen Assembly (screen assembly) consisted of three (3) parts: A-9021 Gasoline Tank
Filler Screen (filler screen); A-9022 Gasoline Tank Filler Screen Bottom (screen bottom); and A-9023 Gasoline Tank Filler
Screen Head (screen head).
In relation to this, there was also the A-9032 Gas Tank Filler Flange Assembly which secured the filler screen assembly and
gas cap to the tank.
The main function of the screen assembly, or as some called it, a spark arrestor, was not only to keep bits of small particles
from getting into the gas tank when filling the tank with gas, but it was also placed in the tank solely as a fire preventative item
according to the January 1929 Ford Service Bulletin and the January 15, 1928 issue of Ford News.
There were two (2) types of screen assemblies. The first type was the “screw-on” type which had brass screens to begin with
followed by steel screens. The second type had “tabs” which replaced the “screw-on” type. There were also three (3) types of
filler flange assemblies which were soldered to the top of the gas tank. Each part had various minor changes within each type.
The brass screen type is not as prevalent as the steel screen type. The brass filler screen assembly ceased production a few days
after the designated change to steel on May 3-10, 1928 as indicated on the part release sheet”. Utilizing vehicle production
numbers for the given point in time, “computes out to about 3% of the screen assemblies being made of brass”.
“The first screen assembly A-9020, started off as having a solid brass “filler screen” and “screen
bottom” there were no long vertical ribs or longitudinal groves on the “filler screen”; it had a screw-
on, non-plated steel “screen head”. The “screen head” started out as either a “seamed” or seamless”
part. The assembly was less than 6 inches in overall length and was used with A-9002 Cowl (Gas)
Tank Assembly and a brass A-9032 Gas Tank Filler Flange Assembly, (Type 1) (Fig. 1).
By November 30, 1927, Part Release # 5343 indicated
that there was a change in the length of the “filler screen” which therefore
changed the overall length of the screen assembly itself to about 6 inches
where it remained as such throughout production (Fig. 2).
As the new 1930 models were being designed, so was the A-9020 Gasoline Tank Filler Screen Assembly. On November 9,
1929, Part Release #14489, the old style screen assembly with the steel screw-on
“screen head” was to be replaced with one which had
3/8 inch wide steel “lugs” or “tabs” (Fig. 4 Left) to
hold it in place within the new style (Type 2) A-9032
-B (Copper Plated) Gas Tank Filler Flange Assembly
(Fig. 3). The old style screen assembly (screw-on)
thus became A-9020-AR and the new style screen
assembly (with tabs) became A-9020-B.

TECHNICAL TALK continued
On February 24, 1930, Part Release #15663 specified that the width of the lugs or tabs and slots were widened from 3/8 inch to
½ inch to lessen any possibility of breakage of the lugs themselves (Fig.4 Right). This feature was also indicated in the March
1930 Ford Service Bulletin thus indicating that a heavier gauge of material was also being used in the manufacture of the new
part. The part number, however, remained the same.
On December 2, 1930, Part Release # 18323, Ford decided to replace the filler screen assembly (with the ½ inch lugs) and re-
instate the filler screen assembly with the screw-on “screen head” which was very similar to, if not exactly like, the 28-29 filler
screen assembly. Thus the filler screen assembly with the ½ inch lugs became A-9020-BR and the reinstated filler screen as-
sembly became A-9020-A.
This also required a change in the A-9002-C tank (introduced mid-1930) during this time as a new style (Type 3) A-9032-C
(Copper Plated) Gas Tank Filler Flange Assembly was also changed to accept the reinstated A-9020-A filler screen assembly
with the screw-on “screen head” but retained the “Easy-On” type of gas cap (Fig. 5). However, there may be some early 1931
tanks which still possess the Type 2 Gas Tank Filler Flange and the “tabby” type filler screen assembly. This feature remained
the same, including its use on the 1931 A-9002-E tanks which were used with the indented firewalls, throughout the production
period of the Model A and AA Ford.
Sunshine & Raindrops Barbara Amy was scheduled for an outpatient procedure on her ear and things didn’t
quite go as planned. She ended up staying a few nights, but is now home and recovering
with some extra help for the next couple of weeks. Sending get well wishes your way
Barbara, don’t get too use to that extra help! We’ll see you soon.
Tom Lazar had some heart problems and had a stint put in. He & Karen are off to
Scotland/Ireland on the 26th for vacation. So all is well there too. Have a wonderful vacation!

Good luck!
Here Comes The Bride!
Fred Crone and his 1930 Model A Town
Sedan were the hit of one lucky couple’s
wedding on Friday, May 6th. Fred gra-
ciously agreed to be “the driver” and
chauffeured the bride and maid of honor
to the wedding venue in Point Loma, then
transported the bride and groom to a photo
shoot at Sunset Cliffs, finally delivering
the happy couple to the Thursday Club for
the reception. Fred noted that his Model
A Town Sedan had also been used as the
get-away car for his own wedding in the
1960’s! Many thanks to Fred for sharing his “A”!
TECHNICAL SEMINAR @ The Beasley’s home
Many thanks to Arlyn Bieber, Ron Engen, Reen Kotas, Vern
Schwebke, Ray Beardslee and Stan Boyer who worked together on Sun-
day, April 28th to remove the engine from Jack & Helen Beasley’s 1929
Cabriolet. The women observers likened it to a hive of busy bees watch-
ing the men working in tandem for a quick removal. With the engine
removal complete and the “A” back in the garage, the group retired to
Pizza, beer and fellowship on a beautiful April afternoon.
Part 2 of this Technical Seminar will be the In-
stallation of Jack’s new engine, which has been
set for Saturday May 25th – more photos next
month!

Thank you for your patients when I need to move the due dates, and respond to my emails when I need more information. We have a GREAT BOARD and our members are some of the BEST MODEL A’ERS out there. You have made my job pretty easy over the years!
MY HAT IS OFF TO ALL OF YOU –THANK YOU!
OUR ROVING REPORTER - BILL CORSON HAS BEEN OUT AND ABOUT !
2019 Lakeside Road-eo Parade
Wagon master Fred Crone rustled up a goodly herd of model A’s to participate in the Lakeside parade on a slightly
damp and cool Saturday morning. After leaving the corral at Target’s parking lot it was a short drive to the staging
area where we decked out our vehicles with all sorts of regalia. As usual, we had to dodge a few road apples left by
inconsiderate horses (guess they were marking their territory like the model A’s do with leaking oil).
There was no way to get a spectator head count but there definitely was a slew of them.
At the conclusion of the parade it was like a stampede as many of us headed to the chuck wagon AKA the Omelet
Factory in Santee. (thanks to Richard for suggesting that place to partake of some vittles). My ride back up the hill to
Alpine was uneventful with the exception of when Dick Potts made it through the traffic signal going downhill on old
highway 8 near Los Coche’s It changed to red just as I approached the intersection and I had to make a full stop going
35-40 MPH. I left a fair amount of Goodyear diamond tread rubber on the blacktop. (white knuckles and pucker
time). All-in-all, it was a great event.
Fred Crone encouraged club members to wear cowboy hats, etc. I ordered a 10 gallon hat on-line. Guess what!
When it arrived I discovered I only had a 2 gallon head. Bill Corson
One more thing:
While “flagging-up” at the staging area a group of participants were directly behind the model A’s. They were on a
Flatbed float and were comprised of mostly young folks, a few adults, and some goats. My attention was focused on
one young lady who had a striking resemblance to one of my former girlfriends. (I always knew when she was present
because I could smell her Old Spice aftershave deodorant). On second thought, maybe it was one of the goats that
reminded me of her. Oh, to be young again. Bill Corson
Lakeside Parade/Hard Luck Candidate ?
The flat tire Gods were active during the Lakeside parade. Richard Potts’s pick-up experi-
enced one the left rear tire. It could not happen on the Target parking lot where we assembled,
or at the staging area while waiting for the parade to start. That would be too convenient. In-
stead, it decided to flatten out pulling onto Highway 67. Those God folks must have a sense
of humor and thought Richard was lonesome for the Hard luck trophy.
(Sorry throwing Bill Corson under the bus for this one, Valarie has her spies everywhere!)
Edgemoor Car Display
The car show held 5/17/19 in Santee was a new experience for me. Never having been there it exceeded my expecta-
tions. A great facility with plenty of preferred parking for the club. Live music to keep us entertained while consum-
ing pastries and beverages. The staff was accommodating and there were vehicles of every description from model
T’s to low-riders, and everything between. A great event. Bill Corson
What’s new at the Museum?
A small team of trustees have been
working on developing an electronic
information kiosk for our mu-
seum. The kiosk will be free standing
and will allow visitors to learn about
the Model A, our museum, contribu-
tors to the museum, Hall of Fame in-
ductees, and to provide access for re-
spectful memorial recogntion.
Think of the kiosk as an “electronic
docent” whose purpose is to help you
experience the beautiful museum that
recognizes the Model A and its many
friends and followers. With the soft-
ware now developed and hardware on
order, we expect to have the kiosk up
and running this June. We hope you
will visit the museum soon and enjoy
our newest volunteer…even though
he’s electronic

Larry & Carolyn Kaiser have been out with their newly restored 1930 Coupe. It looks and sounds great. They recently shared with me that they are sorry they didn’t join the club sooner. They were neighbors of Meyer’s Engine and running gear by Hansen and crew; fenders by Webb Smith; body by Mark Williamson; headliner, door panels and carpet by Armando.
