PLAYER OF THE WEEK: For the third week in a row, the West Coast Conference Player of the Week award went to a USF player. Shortstop Aritz Garcia earned the honors for his play during the week of April 24th. The junior hit .533 in four games for the Dons with a .667 slugging percentage. Garcia totaled eight hits, two doubles, two RBIs, two walks and two sacrifice bunts and a stolen base to lead the Dons to a 4-0 record last week. He was error free in 41 innings of baseball with 12 assists and three put outs. Garcia recorded multiple hits in four games, including a three-hit game against Loyola Marymount on April 30.

NO RUNS FOR YOU: Left-handed closer Jordan Remer did not yield a run during the entire month of April. The junior gave up just two hits in seven appearances, while striking out 19 in 12 innings of work and allowing an opposing batting average of just .057.

GOING STREAKING: Outfielder Pete Lavin is taking an 11-game hitting streak to San Diego this weekend. Lavin has hit safely in 36 of the Dons’ 44 games this season. The senior is hitting .407 in West Coast Conference play.

YOU ARE OUT: Junior Nik Balog is now second in all-time put outs at USF. The first baseman has amassed 948 put outs and leads the West Coast Conference with 393 putouts this season.

FROM THE BULLPEN: Of all USF pitchers with at least 10 innings on the mound, relief pitcher Elliott Waterman leads the team in ERA (2.36) and has moved to a perfect 5-0 record after this past weekend of play. The sophomore has made 17 appearances to total 34.1 innings, which is the most of any reliever on the roster. He has given up just nine earned runs and struck out 33.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE: The Dons claimed their fourth and fifth extra inning wins of the season on April 30 and May 1 and are now 5-1 in extended games this season. Sophomore Jared Denham has scored the winning run in the last two wins and made contact at the plate to force a fielding error to score the winning run in the Dons’ third extra inning win.

TAKING THE SERIES: USF won it’s fifth series of the season after sweeping Loyola Marymount in three games. The Dons also won two out of three against UC Davis and Pacific this year and swept Portland and Santa Clara.

SCOUTING THE TOREROS: Then-No. 24 San Diego swept USF at Benedetti Diamond by scores of 4-2, 10-4 (in 12 innings) and 4-3 on April 30 to May 2 last season.

LAST TIME VS. SAN DIEGO: After getting hot at the end of last season by going 19-2 to win the West Coast Conference, San Diego began this season with a 4-17 start. The Toreros lost nine in a row at one point, but have sud-denly turned things around and enter the series on a five-game win streak. San Diego swept Saint Mary’s in Moraga last weekend to improve to 6-6 in WCC play and climbed to third-place in the standings. USF will see San Diego pitchers Calvin Drummond and Chris Jensen, who have 3.39 and 3.88 ERAs, respectively. Jensen is second in the WCC in strikeouts with 66.

2011 USF BASEBALL “IT’S TIME.”

MULTIPLE HITS: USF has 13 players that have registered multiple hit games this season. Six of those players have done so in 10 or more games. Pete Lavin leads the team with 21 multiple-hit games and is the only Don to have notched four hits in a game this year. Junior Adam Clear has totaled three hits in four games this season.

RECORD-SETTING SKIPPER: USF’s 1-0 win against Saint Mary’s on April 9th gave head coach Nino Giarratano his 350th career Division I coaching win at USF. Another three West Coast Conference wins will give Giarratano the seventh most league wins in WCC history. Giarratano is just 15 wins from passing Dante Benedetti to become the program’s all-time winningest coach.

SIXTH SENSE: After hitting seven doubles this season, Connor Bernatz is now No. 6 in career doubles (44) for the Green and Gold. He needs just six more doubles to become one of the top-five all-time doubles hitters for the Dons.

SWING AND A MISS: Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kyle Zimmer struck out 14 against Saint Mary’s on Saturday, April 9. That put him in second in total strikeouts in a single game in USF history. Con Dempsey notched a program-best 16 strikeouts against Saint Mary’s in 1946.

TOP DOG: USF right-handed pitcher Garrett Luippold’s appearance in the fourth inning of the Dons’ game against No. 13 California on March 29th made him USF’s all-time appearances leader. With 89 appearances to his resume, Luippold moved past Patrick McGuigan’s 88 appearances from 2003-06. The senior has now totaled 96 career appearances.

HOME RUNS FOR HEALTH: Keep donating to USF’s Home Runs for Health Campaign! Junior pitcher/outfielder Bob Mott and teammates Cameron Love, Nik Balog and Jared Denham dreamed up a fundraising campaign for the Nothing But Nets Foundation, which raises money to buy malaria nets for families in Africa. For each home run USF hits this season, the Dons plan to donate a malaria net to the Nothing But Nets Foundation. Each net costs $10. To donate, please visit nothingbutnets.net and search for the USF team page.

WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: USF senior right-handed pitcher Matt Hiserman was named West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week for March 8-13. During the Cal Baseball Classic this weekend, the senior hurler totaled a win and a save and gave up just two hits in nine innings of work. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning against UCSB to preserve the Dons’ 3-2 win and earned his first save of the season. On Sunday morning, Hiserman threw eight scoreless innings and gave up just two hits to lead USF it’s first shutout of the season by way of a 4-0 win against Louisiana-Lafayette.

WCC PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Senior left-handed pitcher Matt Lujan earned his third career West Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week honor after an impressive season opener at No. 1 UCLA on Feb. 18. Lujan gave up just one run on four hits with nine strikeouts, while pitching a complete game for the Dons.

MOVIN’ ON UP: Senior Stephen Yarrow cracked USF’s top three in all-time RBIs after collecting four RBIs in the Dons’ series against Loyola Marymount. He has totaled 133 thus far in his career, putting himself third in school history and needs 20 more to move into the two all-time. The third baseman is also third in home runs (35), fourth in extra base hits (77) and tenth in put outs (552).

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Dons’ centerfielder Pete Lavin was named West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performances during the week of April 18. Lavin hit .526 in four games last week. The senior totaled 10 hits, three doubles, six runs scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base from the leadoff spot. He turned in a .684 slugging percentage and .571 on base percentage. Lavin was flawless in the outfield, catching 10 balls without an error. He is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak. It’s the second consecutive week that a USF player earned Player of the Week honors after Travis Higgs snagged the award last week.

MR. RBI: Junior first baseman Nik Balog was an RBI machine against Santa Clara on April 23. His first at bat resulted in a 2-RBI single up the middle, his second led to a 2-RBI double to left center and his third hit drove in two runs as well. He collected nearly one third of his 21 RBIs this season in three at bats.

TWICE AS NICE: The Dons notched a single-game high of seven doubles in game three against Santa Clara on April 23. Pete Lavin, Stephen Yarrow and Mason Morioka each hit one two-base hit with Travis Higgs and Nik Balog doubling twice.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: USF catcher Travis Higgs was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his play during the week of April 11-17. Higgs was behind the plate for two of the three Dons’ wins at Portland and was a designated hitter in the third game. He hit .429 with a .929 slugging percentage and collected six hits in 14 at bats and totaled seven RBIs, two home runs, one double and four runs scored with only three strikeouts.

BETTER THAN THE REST: The Dons put together their highest scoring game of the season on April 16 against Portland, winning by a score of 19-2. USF totaled season-bests in hits (22), RBI’s (18), total bases (36), at bats (47) and home runs (3). USF’s totals in runs, hits and RBIs were also the most this year by a West Coast Conference team.

HOME RUN MACHINE: Stephen Yarrow hit three home runs in the series against Portland. The first, which was also his first of the season, came via a grand slam on April 16. The senior third baseman added a three-run shot later that game and added a two-run homer in the third game of the series. He is now No. 3 in career home runs (35). He also moved into No. 4 in extra base hits.

ROCKING THE VOTE: USF has played 11 games against ranked teams this season, living up to the preseason ranking of the seventh toughest non-conference schedule in the country.

WALK THIS WAY: The Dons lead the West Coast Conference in walks, having totaled 139 free passes this season. A total of 15 different players have drawn walks.
