UNIT SEVEN

I. 情節發展STORYLINE

It was almost the end of January in San

Francisco, Califorina. What was going on at Peter’s house? Lisa was at Peter’s house admiring all of his red decorations. They gave off a warm feeling during that unusually cold winter.

Among the decorations there were twelve unique Beanie Babies. They were so adorable! Linda really liked the little green and golden dragon. None of them had seen the dragon Beanie Baby before. It was so cool!

Lisa was curious where these cute animals had come from. Peter explained to her that each Beanie Baby represented a Chinese Zodiac animal. “My grandpa sent them to me yesterday” Peter said. Lisa thought this was really neat and wanted to start collecting the Chinese Zodiac animals as well. Peter said that because he was born in the year of the tiger that was his favorite Zodiac animal. Lisa wanted to know what animal year she was born in too. Who would have known those twelve animals had such a story behind them!

文化知識 CULTURE DISCOVERYCultural Product, Perspective and Practice:

New Year wishing tree

A custom in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year is for people to decorate a huge tree branch with silk flowers and red ribbons. People will come to see the tree and write down their new year wishes on a piece of paper, seal it in a red envelope, then throw the red envelope onto the tree. If it is caught on the branches, their wishes will come true. Find a tree branch and plant it in a pot. Everyone can help to decorate the tree with small paper flowers (plum blossoms) and red ribbons. Write a New Year’s wish on a piece of paper and seal it in the red envelope provided by your teacher. Then throw it on to the tree. If it will not stay on the tree after the third try, use a piece of red thread and tie it to the tree. Have fun!

“木”as a radical is normally written at the bottom or left of a character (e.g., 果;材)

金 (jīn) gold; metal; money

“金” as a radical is normally written at the left of a character (e.g., 錢)
