ST. DAVID’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH AND SCHOOL

BLESSING AND DEDICATION

NOVEMBER 24, 2013

Page 2: SanctuaryRededication11-24-2013

From the Rector….

Welcome to St. David’s Episcopal Church and School, and welcome to this day of thanksgiving and celebration.

St. David’s strives to be a people and a place where the love, mercy, and grace of Christ are encountered. With the

renovation of our sanctuary, as we are saying our prayers, lifting our voices in song, hearing the Word of God, and

breaking bread together with our eyes drawn through the cross and window out into the world we are called to

serve. This is a constant reminder that what we do in this sacred space empowers us to live out God’s mission for

the church in our daily lives. We give thanks for those who came before us laying the foundation for a church and

school that is called to reach out to serve our surrounding neighbors, community, and beyond.

Our liturgy today is a reflection and incorporation of the liturgy from the dedication of this sanctuary in 1961,

which was evening prayer and confirmation. In preparation for this celebration we commissioned Donald Sebesta

to write a hymn which emphasizes what it means to be the church. May all that we say, all that we do, and all that

we are glorify God.

Peace,

The Reverend Lisa Mason

I AM THE CHURCH!

I AM THE CHURCH!

The great Creator drew the plans for me within His heart of love;

The great architect gave His dearest possession that I might be erected;

My one and only Foundation is His Son - whose body was nailed to a tree;

My Chief Cornerstone - the Stone which the builders rejected;

My walls - placed without the sound of hammers - were built by the martyrs of the centuries;

My steeple points upward toward the Great Architect—Builder throughout eternity.

From my belfry rings out the call to worship to multitudes of all ages;

My door swings open to all people of every condition and age, bidding them welcome;

In my sanctuary there is -

Peace for troubled minds,

Rest for weary bodies,

Compassion for suffering humanity,

Forgiveness for repentant sinners,

Communion with the saints,

And CHRIST for all who seek Him. (poem by Beulah Hughes)

OPENING SENTENCE BCP 78 Give thanks to the Lord, and call upon his Name; make known his deeds among the peoples. -Psalm 105:1 CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION BCP 79 Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Officiant and People together, standing or kneeling Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. THE INVITATORY BCP 80 Celebrant: Lord, open our lips. People: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Celebrant and People: Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

The people may be seated JUBILATE (sung by the choir) BCP 82 LESSON Colossians 1:11-20 May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to en-dure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inher-itance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers-- all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is be-fore all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. BENEDICTUS ES, S-236

LESSON Luke 23:33-43

Celebrant: The Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, according to Luke. People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing. The people stood by, watching Jesus on the cross; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!" The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!" There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews." One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!" But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to you, Lord Christ.

APOSTLES CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS—LITANY AND BLESSINGS

O God, the Father, Creator of heaven and earth; Have mercy upon us. O God the Son, Redeemer of the World; Have mercy upon us. O God the Holy Ghost, Sactifier of the faithful; Have mercy upon us. O holy, blessed, and glorious Trinity, One God; Have mercy upon us. O Christ, the Rock upon which thy church is built, whereon thy people, as living stones fitly framed together grow into a spiritual house; Defend thy Church, O Lord. O Christ, the Vine of which thy People are the branches, that they may bring forth fruit a hundredfold; Defend thy Church, O Lord. O Christ, the Head of thy Body, the Church, whereof all thy People are the members; Defend thy Church, O Lord. O Christ, our Prophet, who teachest the way of God in truth; Defend thy Church, O Lord. O Christ, our Priest, who didst offer up thyself upon the Cross, and ever livest to make intercession for us with the Father; Defend thy Church, O Lord. O Christ, our King, who reignest over all the earth, and makest us the citizens of thy heavenly kingdom; Defend thy Church, O Lord. O Christ, who didst send the Holy Ghost upon the Church at Pentecost, enduing it with power from on high; Defend thy Church, O Lord. We do beseech thee to hear us, O Lord God; and that we may continue steadfastly in the Apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers; We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

Page 9: SanctuaryRededication11-24-2013

That we may make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost; We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. That thou wilt fulfill thy promise to be with us always, even unto the end of the world; We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. That thou wilt bless the Clergy of thy Church that they may diligently preach the Gospel, and faithfully administer the Holy Sacraments; We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. That thou wilt heal the divisions in thy Church, that we all may be one, even as thou art one with the Father; We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. That every member of the Church in his vocation and ministry may truly and goodly serve thee; We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. Arise, O God, maintain thine own cause; And forget not the congregation of the poor forever; Look down from heaven, behold, and visit this vine; And the branch that thou madest so strong for thyself. Let thy priests be clothed with righteousness; And let thy saints sing with joyfulness. The Lord be with you; And with thy spirit. Let us pray. O Lord, we beseech thee, let thy continual pity cleanse and defend thy Church; and because it cannot continue in safety without thy succor, preserve it evermore by thy help and goodness; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom with thee and with the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen.

Now unto Him, who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think according to the power that worketh in us, unto Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus throughout all the ages, world without end. Amen. BLESSING OF NAVE AND TRANSCEPT DEDICATION OF PEWS

Celebrant: The Lord has set his throne in heaven: People: And his kingship has dominion over all.

O Lord God Almighty, you disclosed in a vision the elders seated around the throne: Accept these pews for the use of those called to minister in your earthly sanctuary, and grant that those who serve you here may do so with reverence and love, to your honor and glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. DEDICATION OF THE ORGAN

Celebrant: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Crea-tor of heaven and earth. For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS AND BENEDICTUS, S-128

Celebrant: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

Page 12: SanctuaryRededication11-24-2013

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remem-brance of me." After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me." Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

Celebrant and People: We remember his death, We proclaim his resurrection, We await his coming in glory;

Celebrant: And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjec-tion under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with David and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD BCP 364

Celebrant: Alleluia, Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
