Every summer for the past three years, Federal Way has hosted the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. This year, the Tournament of Champi-ons is back in Federal Way in a new location at the Commons Mall. 23 contestants will compete in a singles and doubles competition to determine the 2012 winner.

In a field where every contestant is a master of their trade, picking a winner is like selecting a MVP from a field of all stars. The singles competition will run from Thursday, Aug. 16, to Sunday, Aug. 19, and the doubles will run Aug. 24-25.

Added to the event this year are a number of special days. Every weekend there will be live music. There will be a special stage performance by John Gowdy of Flying Colors. This one-man show is a treat for the eyes and will wow audiences with his one-of-a-kind artistic performance.

After each day’s competition, and during breaks each day, the artists will perform in a Quicksand competition. These 10-minute short competitions create strong rivalries between the competitors for the title of best of show. The audience determines who moves on in this competition. You will be amazed what the artists can do with a bucket of sand in 10 minutes, especially given the fact they will not know what the object is until they step up to the podium. In an international event, the artist’s interpretation of the English language often leads to some quizzical sculptures.

There are several special events scheduled during the competition. Free admission day is Thursday, Aug. 16, where everyone gets in free. Federal Way day is Tuesday, Aug. 21, and everyone with a Federal Way address will get $2 off the gen-eral admission price. On Thursday, Aug. 23, is the Chamber of Commerce Sand Blast. This special ticketed event will include admission, drinks and Cajun-inspired foods.

This event would not be possible without the help of several key volunteers, civic organiza-tions and community sponsors. It is hosted by the Federal Way Community Council, a 501c3 non-profit organization. Community volunteers John Hatcher, Susan Weldon, David Sobie, Tom Ono, Bryce Lockerd and Carla Conrad were instrumental in the planning and organization of this event. The City of Federal Way provided sponsorship and countless hours of staff time for setup, benches, stages and permitting. A special thank you goes to Mayor Skip Priest and

his staff for their help. Woodstone Credit Union was back for a second year as a primary sponsor. Their staff time for the Kids Zone sandbox is in-credibly helpful. The Federal Way Mirror and its staff created the marketing and editorial pieces to make this event a success. Café Pacific added technical support for the vendors and food for the contestants, including a volunteer meeting point for all of the planning. Indianola, WA – Charlie Beaulieu began sand sculpting 29 years ago on the beaches in Northwest Washington State. Raised by bald eagles, Beaulieu sees things others may miss and is nicknamed Hawk Eye. A premier home builder and designer by trade, he holds 12 World Championship Titles, 7 Guinness Book World Records, several Ameri-can and Canadian National Championship titles, and many other prestigious awards. Beaulieu has been featured on multiple televi-sion shows, and has sculpted all over the globe working for many prestigious clients and celebrities. He is known for his innovative and

creative Ideas; many that are stolen from other world class sculptors. Beaulieu is the director of the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. He finds it a great honor to work for and represent the sand sculptors of the world.

SuzAnne ALtAMARe

Daytona Beach, FL – Suzanne Altamare started sculpting sand in 1982 as an apprentice to Marc Altamare. She specializes in Marc’s soft sand technique but really enjoys carving compacted sand as well. Her favorite subjects to carve are antique motorcycles, coral reef, sea creatures, steam punk creatures, and sea shells. Some other interests include painting, sketching, painting murals, sand casting, and sculpting in cement, styrofoam and clay. Her hobbies are boogie boarding, gardening, and being a full time cat slave at home.

Suzanne lives in Daytona Beach, Florida and travels to sand jobs all over the USA, Canada, and sometimes Europe. She serves as assistant to the director and sculptor liaison for the World Championship of Sand Sculpting. Motto: change your mind, not the sand.

VeRn CooLey

Seattle, WA - Vern Cooley is a Washington State native and a retired architect living in Seattle, WA. Over the years, he has pursued many creative and artistic interests including: stained glass windows, watercolor painting, ink drawing, snow sculpture (including a trip to China to compete), plaster sculpture, pumpkin carving and sand sculpture. He is captain of the Orbital Sanders sand sculpture team.Cooley has been active in sand sculptures since 1983. He has won awards in sand sculpture competitions in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California, Virginia, Texas, Minnesota, and British Columbia.

He has done sand sculptures for two television commercials and participated in two world record attempts.He has conducted sand sculpture classes in Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, and Santa Cruz, CA.

KALi bRADFoRD

Kali Bradford, Sequim, WA - is a poet, painter and substitute teacher. Sand sculpting has been a primary medium for her since the early 1980s. She has traveled as a guest master sand sculptor to Canada (seven times), Puerto Rico, France, Germany, Belgium (five times), Holland (3 times), Australia, Mexico (2 times) China (2 times) and throughout the United States. As a guest teacher she conducted workshops at the Architectural Colleges of Holland and Hawaii. As team captain, her teams - California Dreamers and Scatter Grains - won the U.S. Open in Imperial Beach, Calif., nine times. As an artist

she is residence grantee of the National Endowment for the Arts, and has worked for various schools, art museums and community festivals for nine years in California and two years in Washington State, incorporating sand sculpture with multi-media arts. Her past and current projects include community and professional team building workshops, as well as demonstra-tion sculptures.

The abundant nature and raw materials like wood, stone, ice, snow and sand guided him early onto a creative path. Throughout his life he has explored many mediums, always creating something new. CARL JARA

Cleveland, OH - Carl Jara hails from Cleveland, OH. He is a simple guy who likes woodworking, gardening, food, a good book and beer. He has earned two of the most envied jobs in the world; exhibits creator for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and professional sand sculptor. Over the last 21 years he had traveled the world, won six dozen or so medals, made friends and family and worked with and

competed against almost every sand sculptor in the business. Many of these whom have now become friends and family. Jara creates sand sculpture because he worships it; it is his spiritual experience. If he doesn’t talk to you during the event, it’s because he is in the middle of either rapture or despair.

San Diego, CA - In 1983, Dave Henderson discovered sand sculpture and embraced this amazing art form with a passion. He won the 1987 World’s Team Championships held in White Rock, B. C., Canada, and the first International Sand Castle Competition, (singles division) in Clearwater, FL. In 1988, his success continued as he won the US Open Team Championship in San Diego, CA and then over 10 years later the 1999 Team World Championships at Harrison Hot Springs, B. C., Canada.

Castefranco, Italy - John Gowdy “The East Coast Cowboy” has retired from the Atlantic City Fire Department where he achieved the rank of Captain. After 34 years of public service, 27 years in the fire depart-ment and another 7 years on the Atlantic City Beach Patrol he retired to a small town in Italy called Castefranco near Venice. It is here where he met his new Italian bride, Laura. Laura and John carve sand together and won first place in “Sand Wars” that recently aired on The Travel Channel. Gowdy majored in Physics and Visual Arts at

Stockton State College of N.J.He has dedicated the rest of his life to the arts. He sculpts both sand and marble and also paints portraits. John has a new performance painting show known as “Flying Colors.” By throwing paint onto a spinning 6-foot square canvas capturing the likeness of many famous people in usually two songs or less or about eight minutes, this is a sight you won’t want to miss. Fort Myers, FL - Bill and Marianne Knight found their love for sand sculpting about 10 years ago when they began competing in amateur contests. After winning several first- , second- and third-place people’s choice awards, they became professional sculptors in 2006. In the past few years Bill and Marianne have managed five major sand sculpting events reaching almost 300,000 people. In November 2011, they teamed up with the World Championship of Sand Sculpt-

Davenport, CA - Morgan Rudluff is a vibrant, young, firecracker hailing from the North Coast (rural) region of Santa Cruz, CA. Buried deep in the mountains among the cows, hawks, feral kittens and but-terflies, she maintains a smoldering level of “sha-zamm.”A bit of a performance ham, Rudluff has dabbled in street perfor-mance, and has made a name for herself on the Travel Channel’s reality show “Sand Masters,” which highlights the adventures of a team of internationally traveling sand sculptors. Known to some as an “explosion of fruit, spices, and exotic-urban-experimental tasty-

treats,” she never seems to lack self or viewer satisfaction. Tacoma, WA - Sand sculpting is an avocation for Jeff Strong, whose main profession is computer pro-gramming for the University of Puget Sound. He began sand sculpting 12 years ago when he met and began training with master sculptor and Federal Way, WA, resident Michael Velling. Strong likes to emphasize the improbable magic of sand sculpture, and his compositions often incor-porate open space within the piece. He does not shy away from humor, but he is especially interested in artistic form.You may have seen Strong on KING-TV, Northwest Backroads, or competing recently on the Travel Chan-nel’s “Sand Wars” broadcast. His first solo awards came in 2004, when he placed first in the semi-pro

division and won the People’s Choice award in Seaside, Ore. His solo sculpture of a dragon devouring a sand sculptor went viral on the Internet, and for some time was the first photo returned by a Google search for sand sculpture. The sculpture won third place in the 2005 Canadian Open Sand Sculpting Com-petition at Parksville, British Columbia, Canada, and the People’s Choice award. At Harrison Hot Springs in British Columbia, Canada, Strong competed in five World Championships, and when the event moved to Federal Way, WA, in 2010, his team won second place.Last year, his “Chamber Music,” a tall gravity-defying hollow shell with a dancer hidden in plain sight, garnered a solo medal in the Tournament of Champions in Federal Way, WA.

Sue MCGReW

Tacoma, WA - Sue McGrew hails from Tacoma, WA, located in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She graduated from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles in 2008 with a BFA in Theatre - Stage Management, and a minor in sculpture. Her first taste of sand sculpting was in high school, after which she found herself hope-lessly addicted to the ephemeral arts and immediately continued her sculpting career after college. Her early introduction to sand makes her possibly one of the youngest professional sand sculptors, currently, in the world. She has appeared on Travel Channel’s reality

television show “Sandblaster III - The Extreme Sand Sculpting Competition” in 2008, and is a sculptor on Travel Channel’s current reality TV show “Sand Masters.” Today she travels the world creating art with her partner Sandis Kondrats of Latvia as team SANDISSUE, working mainly with sand, snow and ice. Her most recent awards in competition are first place in Texas Sand Fest 2012, second place in the Windermere Classic in Port Angeles, WA, in 2011, and first place doubles with Kondrats in Siesta Key, FL, in the Crystal Classic in 2010.

Joliet, IL - Brian Turnbough has been sculpting sand professionally since 2000. He made his first sculpture with sculptor Ted Siebert of the Sand Sculpture Company while attending Eastern Illinois University majoring in painting and drawing. Since that time Turn-bough has worked with the Sand Sculpture Company and created hundreds of sculptures across the globe for festivals and events. Last year, Turnbough took home his first championship win at the American Championships of Sand Sculpture. Additionally, he has competed in team sand sculpture competitions as a member of the

Sandboxers and Team Totally in Sand. Turnbough shares a home with his wife, Brooke. He is a professional mural artist for his com-pany, Walls With Imagination. His murals are featured in homes and businesses across the Chicago, IL area. In 2010, Turnbough was commissioned to paint a portrait for Hall of Fame ice hockey player, Bobby Hull. That painting is now on display at the United Center, home of the Chicago Blackhawks, in Chicago. He splits his time between his love for color and his love for form by sculpting and painting as often as possible.

LuCinDA “SAnDy Feet” WieRenGA

South Padre Island, TX - Lucinda “Sandy Feet” Wierenga has won a modest amount of international fame with her sand sculpting skills, competing at major events all around the world for the past 25 years. She has taught tens of thousands of people how to build a better sand castle in lessons, workshops and team building exercises. She has

written three books on sand sculpture and is working on her fourth that will be e-book ready and formatted for iPad, Kindle and Nook, to name a few. Her current obsession is perfecting her top-secret recipe for creating sand sculptures that last for months and possibly a good bit longer. She recently opened what may well be the first and only sand castle academy/sculpture garden/vacation rental on beautiful South Padre Island, TX. Langly, British Columbia, Canada - Bruce Waugh has been sculpting sand, snow and pumpkins for 25 years and still loves the attention that it gets him. Combining part athletic endurance contest and the combination of artistic skills and the love of the performance aspect makes for a wonderful experience for the viewer. Recently he has won first-place at the Canadian Open in 2010; People’s Choice at the Canadian Open in 2009 and 2010; and first-place at the BC Snow Carving Championships at Silver Star in 2009.

Mill Creek, WA - Brent Terry grew up in Seattle, and has always loved sculpting sand on Northwest area beaches as a hobby. He was originally a student of architecture and graphic design, but graduated instead in business / marketing from the University of Washington. He has been sculpting for 10 years, and is accredited with a World Championship medal for Architecture in 2003, and the coveted Sculptor’s Choice award at the World Championships in 2007. His sand sculpting style of clean edges and hard light against shadow come from his early educational roots.

Terry is the owner of Terry Marketing Services, and is a recognized expert in the area of homebuilding strategy. For 20 years he has coached and consulted business owners and independent professionals in simple branding and marketing methods allowing them to outperform their competition. He is an author, entrepreneur, marketing coach and all-around idea guru. Described as a maverick, he is a visionary who operates unrestrained by mainstream views in both his work and hobbies.

MiCHAeL VeLLinG

Federal Way, WA - It all started for Michael Velling at age 6 in Atlantic City, N.J., where he got busted for trying to take sand home from the beach. The bug to carve sand was renewed as an adult with his wife, Frances, at Long Beach, WA, in 1989. Competition and display sculptures have taken him to many locations in the U.S., Canada and Europe. More recently, he has been featured in two television programs about life and the arts in the Northwest. Michael’s background includes clay, bronze and figure drawing. His future lies in developing more abstract and interpretative sculpture.

Who We AreThe Tournament of Champions is an event produced by the Federal Way Community Council. The Federal Way Community Council is a non-profit 501c3 corporation. Its purpose is to bring community events to life in the Greater Federal Way area. In the past, this included the Federal Way Festival Days. Over the years, this event had run its course, so the “Worlds” was born as a second generation of this group. Since the Community Council is a non-profit, all proceeds generated from the event will go to support local charities in Federal Way. The council is supported by a number of volunteers and a board of directors.

Backfill. Shoveling sand around the base of a sculpture, filling an area where the sand has previously been removed, to prevent an immi-nent collapse. Sometimes quickly done after cracks appear in the sculpture and sometimes because the sculptor deems the sculpture to be dangerously close to collapse, based on their evaluation of the sand quality.Bird Wire. Small wires stuck into the topmost elements of a sculpture and protruding several inches vertically, to discourage birds from land-ing and doing damage. These ‘mysterious’ wires are often given creative explanations to the inquiring public, especially after the first few dozen inquiries. Sample: “Those wires induce an electromagnetic field that binds the sand grains together and prevents collapse. ”Block. Carving the rough, approximate desired shape out of the pounded up sand is called ‘block-ing out’. It’s usually done with larger trowels, or even shovels. The trick is to leave enough sand so that the exact, refined shape of the subject can be found inside the blocked out area.Blowout. Severe water leakage from a form dur-ing pound up, or at worse, the failure of a form dur-ing pound up, usually by having the nails holding to joined forms pull apart from pressure.Bucket form. Any bucket transformed into a form

by cutting out its bottom, so it can be turned upside down and filled through that opening. These often top off a stack of larger forms.Contest mode. Working on a sculpture as fast as possible to achieve completion in the avail-able time. Sculptors typically are in this mode on the final day of a contest, but sculptors on commercial projects sometimes have to work in this mode to meet a deadline.flatwork. Relief sculpture created within a flat plane. Most commonly a sponsor’s logo.forms. Any material used to contain the sand during the pound up/compaction process. Not to be confused with molds.Glue. Biodegradable, non-toxic, invisible white glue solution sometimes applied to the finished surface of exterior sculptures to prevent wind and sun erosion. The word glue is often avoided in public to prevent the audience’s miscon-ception that the sculptures are held together with glue. In reality, the glue coating holds the sculpture together in exactly the same way that the paint holds your car together.innies and outies are the two types of inter-locking wooden forms that combine in various even numbers to enable pound ups of all sizes. Term refers to the position of the 2x4 braces on each piece of plywood. Innies always attach to

outies on both ends, so all tiers on a pound up must have an even number of forms, and an equal number of innies and outies.Judging light. Refers to the position of the sun at the time of day that judging occurs. Orienting a contest entry to be best seen in the ‘judging light’ is an important consideration.kit. All the gear, tools, forms, supplies, etc. that a master sculptor must travel with.linear. Refers to sculpture composed of straight lines and flat planes, usually architec-ture, but could also be abstract elements or plaques for the placing of sponsor logos.maquette. Tiny preliminary version of a pro-posed sculpture, usually make in clay, but can be of sand or any material.master. Term used to describe anyone with a sand sculpting skill level that makes them competitive in masters competitions.molds. Children’s sand toys, Plastic formed into the shape of castles, fish, etc. Anything that shapes the sand to a finished state. Not to be confused with forms.plastic. Refers to the plastic used by some sculp-tors to create forms for pound ups. Above ground swimming pool siding is popularly used.pad. The sand base on which a pound up sits.

The top surface at least is usually soaked and tamped level to sit forms on. Height ranges from a few inches to several feet.plot. The marked off area that defines the outside limits of a contest sculpture. All sand used must be from within the plot.pneumatic particle extraction device. A very necessary and handy master’s tool. It’s a straw used to blow away small areas of loose sand from a sculpture.pound up. The process of compacting wet sand in a form or forms to prepare it for sculpting . pyramid. A series of forms stacked so that each tier is smaller than the one below, and also cen-tered on it, resulting in a pound up that looks like a step pyramid. This is the most common type of pound up and is almost always the type provided by contests that build the pound ups in advance for the contestants.Satellite. If you hear sculptors talking about a satellite piece, maybe they’re making a sculpture of Sputnik, but more likely they’re talking about a small pound up that’s made in addition to a major pound up, usually on the side of the plot.

Q. How do the contestants qualify for this event?A. Sculptors qualify by winning many contests or by having a very unique style or technique.

Q. Where they are from?A. The sculptors are from all over the world and represent four different countries.

Q. How long have they been sculpting?A. Most have been sculpting in excess of 10 years.

Q. What other artwork do they do?A. Many sand sculptors also work in ice, snow, wood, and permanent materi-als.

Q. Can it be used again next year?A. The sand could be used again next year.

Q. Can they have help with labor or power tools pounding up?A. The sculptors may not have labor help pounding up except for lifting or removing of the forms. They may not use power equipment or power tools. Their tools of trade are a shovel and a tamper.

Q. How long do they have to work?A. There is a time limit to compete and everyone has the same amount of time. Solos have 28 man hours, Doubles have 56 man hours. Both contests run 28 hours.

Q. What is sprayed on when completed and why?A. Finished sculptures can be sprayed with very diluted Elmer’s glue to put an egg shell type coating on the surface only. It helps protect against surface drying and light rain.

Q. What is the cost to bring in these sculptors to compete?A. It costs quite a lot to fly the sculptors in, put them up in hotels, feed them and pay for them to appear. The sand sculpting committee and the host site are responsible for all of these costs. These costs run well past $40,000.

Q. What is the amount of the prize money?A. Prize money is - Solos: 1st - $1,500, 2nd - $1,250, 3rd - $1,000, 4th - $750, 5th - $500; Doubles: 1st - $600, 2nd - $400, 3rd - $200.

Q. Are there rules & some sanctioning body?A. There are a set of rules governing the competition. These rules are deter-mined by the World Championship of Sand Sculpting.

Q. Are the sand sculptures on the Washington & oregon coast the same as here? A. Every location has different sand. Sculptures on the Oregon and Washington coast are made of different sand that allows different amounts of difficulty. Federal Way’s sand is absolutely superior.

Q. Are there a number of big time events like this one or are there only a few?A. Very few. There is another large contest on the East coast in Virginia Beach called The Neptune Festival, but that is the extent.

Q. Where do sculptors learn to do sand sculpturing?A. Most sand sculptors are self-taught, come from snow sculpting, or are apprentices.
