The Selous Game Reserve, at a massive 50,000 kilometres square, (that’s bigger than Belgium) is a wilderness on a huge scale - the largest, in fact, in the whole of Africa. Set on a wide curve of the great Rufiji River, Sand Rivers Selous is both expedition base, and safari retreat. The lodge is small but beautifully formed, with an imposing mess, swimming pool, excellent cooking and careful, at-your-whim service.

The eight rooms are seriously bush deluxe, each one an open-air cottage of timber and thatch, wide and sun-drenched at the front, soft and shadowy at the rear for essential heat retreat. And throughout, the cooling sounds of the river run. Suites expand the space and luxury for the happy hippo in all of us, with big sofas and plunge pools for constant wallowing.

We have a squadron of some of Tanzania’s most committed safari guides, and one of them can be yours alone for adventures: a day on the river, weaving past hippo and crocodile; drives on the trail of lion or wild dog; an elephant bush walk; a night sleeping out under the stars - or simply fishing barefoot on a river rock.
