Letter from the presidentWhat a pleasant, unseasonably warm start to our New Year! I’m loving it!

In this month’s newsletter, you will have three proposed amendment changes to the SBCL bylaws. Two of these deal with changing the dates and times of meetings. This was requested by many members who are unable to attend a Saturday meeting in the summer months. The first proposed amendment will change the annual meeting currently on Saturday in June to a Monday evening meeting. The second amendment is those members who like having a Saturday meeting. We would like to hold the Saturday meetings in May and September in the off season. This will allow those members who are getting their homes ready for summer visitors the opportunity to attend the meeting. The other reasoning for the change is the poor attendance of the Saturday meetings for the same reason stated above. The last request is to allow the past presidents ex officio a limit to their time to serve after the first year on the board of directors. They will have the option to remain if they so choose.

What a great turnout for the presentation from city staff regarding Event Homes! Thanks to the 92 members for your support. City Attorney Bill Macali and Zoning Administrator Karen Lasley showed up on their days off to explain the differences in the two proposals now on the table regarding event homes. There is a lot to be said about taking their days off to speak with us at our meeting. Mr. Macali explained they do not have a time frame for completion of the ordinance to submit to City Council, and they are looking for community comments. The ordinance will not be specific just to Sandbridge. It applies to the entire city even though we have the most at stake.

There was a motion made that passed unanimously by the 92 members present at the meeting to disband the current event homes committee. They were thanked for all their time in presenting our concerns to the city… Fantastic Job! A new committee was established as the Event Home Ordinance Review Committee. We will continue to keep Sandbridge informed of the progress. If anyone would like to view proposals, they will be placed on the website. And--as always--anyone can email or give me a call with questions or concerns..

We know when we see all the wet suits in the ocean that the surf is magnificent. Plenty a surfer was playing hooky today! While I’m just dreaming of our sunny warm days ahead, I will admit it has been a “swell” January!

President Joan Davis called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.. Charles Learned gave the invocation and led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Vice President Cheryl Caloras introduced our guest speaker Karen Lasley, Planning and Zoning Administrator. She, in turn, introduced City Attorney Bill Macali who talked to us about the drafts for a city-wide ordinance on event houses. He said these ordinances are intended to regulate, not eliminate, event houses. He emphasized this is only a starting point for discussions for both sides of the issue and that there is no time frame. He acknowledged that an agreement would be difficult to reach, and if an agreement couldn't be reached, then he would take the issue to the city council and hope to get a resolution there. Mr Macali said the intent is to allow events in residential neighborhoods while preserving the residential atmosphere. There are two draft alternates with significant differences between the two. To read both draft alternates, go to our web site at www.sandbridgecivicleague.org. Also on the web site is a copy of the power point presentation to the city council on November 17 and to our civic league on January 18. If after reading both drafts and you have questions and/or suggestions, please forward them to the Event Homes Committee.

Walt Hunter made a motion to disband the current Event Homes Committee and establish a new balanced committee--one made up of members on both sides of the issue--to review the proposals from city staff. After major discussion, the motion passed unanimously. There were no abstentions. The civic league will continue to work on problems and solutions with the city staff.

Business Meeting: The minutes from the December newsletter were approved as written.

treasurer's report: Tim Ferramosca reported the beginning and ending

balances for October 31 until December 31 were $23,198.00 and $15,057, respectively.

CoMMittee reports:

MeMBership: Charlie Ellin reported that we now have 848 members.

sidewalks: Cheryl Caloras said that we have received survey responses from about 60% of the homes on Sandpiper Road between Porpoise Lane and Tuna Lane. The committee hopes to wrap up the survey efforts by the end of January; based on these survey results, the committee will present a recommendation to the board.

newsletter: Jane Stilley/Jim Belcher reminded us that the deadline for any articles for the newsletter is the 15th of each month.

infrastruCture/puBliC aCCess way: Bill Price has spoken with the city, and Porters Island Road will be the only access way done this year.

Bylaws: Cheryl Caloras read and discussed the three proposed amendments to our bylaws that will appear in the newsletter. Each one must be voted on individually. The first two proposed amendments involve changing dates for SBCL meetings to be held on dates that will make it possible for more of our membership to attend. The third one is to allow the immediate past president (ex-officio) whose term of service beyond one year is by choice. The three proposed amendments can be read in their entirety in the newsletter.

announCeMents: Councilwoman Barbara Henley's monthly meeting is held on the fourth Thursday of every month at 5:00 p.m. in building 19 at the Virginia Beach Courthouse Complex.

Many thanks to Nicole Roper for stepping in to set up the refreshment table while Andrea Colvin recovers from

recent surgery. The next SBCL Meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on February 15 at the Sandbridge Community Chapel.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:40 p.m.

Respectfully Submitted,

Kay Scafone

HOTCAKES’ LAST HURRAHAT THE BAJA

By Jane Stilley

It was billed as “Hotcakes: The Last Sunset” as the iconic band rocked the Baja for the last time before heading into Sandbridge’s sunset. The band has now officially “retired” (more on that a little later) but not before going out with a bang! Hotcakes did not disappoint, nor did the crowd. Fans from millennials to baby boomers to golden agers, turned out to cheer on the band and dance the night away. As for the music itself, well the band put the “hot” back in Hotcakes and played old favorites as well as popular new sounds. What a night!

The band itself was formed before many of its fans were even born. Forty years ago, Hotcakes originated in Virginia Beach, worked Key West in the winter and headed up the East Coast in the spring, according to Bobby Smith, who is now a Sandbridge resident. Bobby says Hotcakes became the house band at Pascal’s from 1980-1985. In 1992, Hotcakes got a call from Doug Wilkins at the Baja, who needed a band for Halloween night. And the rest was history! Bobby says Hotcakes was never officially the house band at the Baja, but many of us thought they were. Bobby says, “I have many fond memories of the Baja, especially the afternoon gigs there.” He also says of the band’s lengthy time together, “We’ve seen it all. The good, the bad and the ugly!”

Hotcakes keyboard player Bryan Harrell is also a Sandbridge resident. He is keeping busy as full-time Music Director at the Sandbridge Community Chapel. Bryan says he is also working with other churches in the area with their contemporary services, as well as teaching piano, voice and computer sequencing.

Now for that Hotcakes “retirement.” Don’t put away your dancing shoes just yet. Bobby Smith says after some discussion, the band will continue to play private parties, weddings and some festivals. He leaves us with this: “Who knows? After feeling so much love at the Baja after the “final gig”, we may even come back for a special engagement this summer.” Stay tuned!

Hello From GuamBy Cindy Graf

Håfa adai and greetings from the tiny island of Guam! Hard to believe it's been four months since we departed Sandbridge. I must say my heart still aches a little when I think about home. The island itself has many beautiful hidden spots to explore and enjoy. The water is crystal clear and always warm. It's like Disneyland under the sea. There's multi-colored coral, beautiful tropical fish; and most exciting are the bright blue starfish that can be found everywhere. I've seen sharks while snorkeling and explored hidden caves. I'm certain to many it sounds like paradise, which it can be, but there are also aspects of Guam that are less appealing.

Let me get straight to it: shopping stinks! If you have unlimited funds, you can choose from Chanel, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Hermes. However, if you're like me and enjoy shopping for great deals, don't come to Guam. You know it's bad when one of the biggest tourist shopping destinations is Kmart. Mind you, it is the largest Kmart in the world, bright, clean and open 24 hours a day; but it's still Kmart and most likely one of the few that is still in operation. There is a taxi stand at the entrance, as well as tourist buses on the hour. There is a Ross, thank goodness. It's the closest I'll get to my T.J.Maxx.

Now, onto the cost of living here on the island. Gas is almost $4.00 a gallon off base. Food is expensive. With its beautiful weather, I had hoped there would be lots of local produce to choose from but unfortunately that is not the case. Even at the Commissary, food costs are sky high. Two heads of Romaine lettuce go for $10.98. Green beans are $6.39 a pound. If you love green veggies, you would be out of luck. However, bacon is $1.75 a pound and a six-pack of Sam Adams beer sells for $2.24. I suppose I could just take up drinking; it’s cheaper!

I spend most days exploring hidden beaches on Guam. I have found incredible amounts of sea glass and shells. I suppose I will take up jewelry making soon to pass the time. Bill and I live on Guam's oldest golf course in Yona. We get to play golf free any day after 3 pm. Our house sits at the edge of a jungle with amazing views. When I say jungle, I really mean an actual jungle. There are wild boars that walk out periodically, deer that bark like dogs at night, tree snakes and huge toads. We've taken to feeding the feral cats and stray dogs (known as Boonie dogs) that populate the island. It helps when I'm missing my sweet dog Kellan.

What I love most about living on Guam are the people. The Chamorro culture is one based on family and faith. They are a kind, welcoming and happy people. The pace of life is definitely slower compared to the States and certain things like speed limits seem more like suggestions than law, as are yellow lights. Having said all that, I still get homesick for my family and my friends back home. Exploring and staying active eases that but it can't make up for the great friends I left behind in Sandbridge. It will always be home to me. More adventures to come. I'll keep you posted!

Pelican RescueBy Gail Lahey

My husband, Dave, and I went for a very early morning walk before work in early December and came across this hurt juvenile pelican. As we tried to go by him, he was very scared and tried to get up but couldn't. His wing appeared to be broken. We couldn't stand to think the poor little guy was in pain and not able to feed himself, as well as being vulnerable to other wildlife. As soon as we got home we called the Virginia Marine Sciences Museum where we were directed to VBSPCA Wildlife rescue for further assistance.

The VB Wildlife Rescue Squad quickly came and picked him up, and confirmed that his right wing on the bend was in fact broken. The rescuer, Rose Chandler, advised me that the pelican was being taken to one of their two volunteer vets on staff for X-rays, and to see if they could set the wing or rehabilitate him.

I want to send a big shout-out to this group of volunteers, Rose, and all the behind the scene workers for doing what they do to help injured animals on our beaches and in our neighborhoods. Rose further advised that if residents see marine life injured or stranded to call the Virginia Marine Sciences Museum Stranding Team at 757-385-7575. For birds and other animal life please call VBSPCA Wildlife Rescue at 757-263-4762. I want to share with our Sandbridge family that these are both important numbers to have and put in your phones.

FOUR-LEGGED BUG BLASTERSBy: Jim Belcher

Surfside Services is well known throughout Sandbridge for its work with residents’ lawn care, pools and hot tubs. For the last few years, though, the company has been making another name for itself: its K9 bedbug detection program.

Using certified dogs to detect potential and actual bedbug problems has become quite an effective program for many residents to use, particularly in rental houses. The company services between 80 and 100 houses monthly and is the only company in the Hampton Roads area with a certified K9 detection program. Having served our area for seven years, Surfside Services also provides its program for hotels, motels, hospitals and office buildings.

The company recently conducted one of its many extensive training exercises as Stephanie Koch and her black lab partner Joker and David Engelbert and his chocolate lab mix Ginger worked on detecting specific bedbug locations within houses.

“We use the dogs to pinpoint locations within both residential and rental houses,” Stephanie explained. “The dogs are quite efficient and are certified annually through the World Detector Dog Organization. Our program runs year-round, and we hold these virtual inspections as part of our detailed training and detection process.”

Frances “Sis” Fox passed away on December 6, 2015 at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania.

Frances was a graduate of the College of William and Mary, where she met her husband, John Fox. They married in 1951 and lived in Williamsburg, Virginia until 1954, when they moved to Corning, New York. “Sis” as she was known by family and friends, found her greatest pleasure in golf and the beach in Sandbridge.

“Sis”is survived by her husband, John Fox of Corning; three sons, Dan (Kim) of Atlanta, GA, Steve of Corning and Rick (Owen) of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren: five great grandchildren: and a sister, Jane (George) Bacon of Norfolk, VA.

Memorial donations can be made to St. John the Apostle Church, 1968 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23456.

AL ROHLFING

Allen Walter Rohlfing died peacefully December 2, 2015 at his home in Virginia Beach. Al was born March 15, 1926 in Randolph County, Illinois.

Left to cherish his memory are his longtime companion, Betty Wells of Virginia Beach, VA; his children, Cynthia “Cyd” Dodson and partner Cindy Browne of St. Louis, MO; Brian Rohlfing and wife Nancy of St. Louis, MO; Jeffrey Martin Browne and wife Cheryl of Newport News, Virginia; and David Browne of Portland, OR. Al had six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbors. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Gloria Browne Rohlfing.

Al joined the US Navy in 1943 at age 18. A World War II veteran, Al served as a Machinist’s Mate on the gunboat LCS 79 in the Pacific theater. In 2007, he had the pleasure of reuniting with surviving crew members and their families during a weekend retreat. Al moved to Virginia Beach in 1979. He was an active member of the Sandbridge community for 36 years, supporting local causes including the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, The Old Coast Guard Station Lifesaving Museum, and the Back Bay Restoration Foundation. He was an energetic and social man who loved ballroom dancing, traveling, painting and visiting with friends and neighbors. An avid windsurfer, he pursued this hobby until the age of 83.

A quietly devout Christian, Al was a member of Tabernacle Methodist Church where he enjoyed the monthly men’s breakfast. His painting of this historic church proved popular with the congregants, and he sold many prints to benefit the church.

Since the death of his wife in 2001, Al has loved and cherished his friend and companion Betty Wells. She cared for him deeply through his life and never left his side during his final illness. The family is deeply grateful for her compassionate care and for the help of the entire Wells family during this difficult time. The family also gives special thanks to the friends and neighbors who made Al’s house a true home and filled his life with laughter and love.

In remembering Al, Sandbridge Beach Civic League President Joan Davis says, “Al has been part of Sandbridge for nearly four decades. I’m hoping all of you were as lucky as I was to have met Al. He will be missed.”

Memorial donations can be made to Tabernacle Methodist Church, 1265 Sandbridge Road, Virginia Beach, Va 23456.

HERO COP HONOREDBy: Jane Stilley

He’s a familiar face in Sandbridge, especially during the summer. Officer Chris Bryant was recently honored by Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms with the Lifesaver Award for saving two firefighters during a tragic day in rough surf on Sandbridge’s north end last September. The firefighters got in trouble after going in to save a teenage tourist who got caught in a rip current. Officer Bryant battled eight-foot waves to pluck the firefighters out, one by one. The teen also survived, but his stepfather drowned trying to save him.

Officer Chris, as we fondly know him, entered the police academy in 2012 after retiring from the Navy where he spent 25 years as a submarine and special operations officer. It didn’t take him long to make an impact here. He was named the 2014 Officer of the Year for the Virginia Beach Police Department’s First Precinct.

I got to know Officer Chris on Thanksgiving Day 2014, when he reached in his pocket and pulled out cash to help a customer at the Sandbridge Market who had forgotten his wallet. The man, who was from Pennsylvania, came back to repay him but Chris had already gone. The man left me $50 dollars to give to Chris to “pay it forward.” And pay it forward he did! Chris told me he had “adopted” a classroom of underprivileged kids and was going to use the money to throw them a Christmas party.

Officer Bryant’s bosses at the Police Department call him a “superstar.” So do the folks in Sandbridge, not just for his heroism but for everyday actions that show us he cares!

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES FOR 2016By Fred Green

In 2011, the Red Cross and the Sandbridge Beach Civic League initiated three annual blood drives here in Sandbridge. In 15 drives over the past five years, 475 pints of blood have been collected from over 525 donors. Half of the people have been from Sandbridge. The Red Cross goal has increased every year from 24 to 31 pints. All goals have been met, with just one exception.

Thanks to all the Sandbridge donors who seldom miss the drives. Without you, the goal would never be made! And another shout-out goes to the group of volunteers from Sandbridge, who work tirelessly managing the six-hour drive.

The three Red Cross blood drives this year are March 17, July 21 and November 17. All are on Thursday afternoons at the Sandbridge Fire and Rescue Station. The blood drives start at 1 pm and run until 7 pm. Mark your calendars now!

Reasons to give:Every two seconds, someone needs blood in the United States.More than 38,000 blood donations are needed every day.97 percent of Americans will need blood or know someone who will need blood in their lifetimes.

I still have mistletoe hanging and I may keep it up all year, just for fun. As memories of the holiday season begin to fade and the New Year, a leap year, begins to unfold, I choose, with the longer nights and shorter days of winter, to reflect and to imagine. I choose to remember and to dream…to dream of what this year might bring. I like to light candles in the early morning darkness and I enjoy a cup of hot tea, late in the afternoon. Winter is a good time for making plans for the coming spring. I do know that time can be relentless in its movement…tick, tick, tick…tock. It won’t be long and summer will be here!

It is cold this morning and feels like winter, but up until now we’ve had a lot of warm days, often breaking record highs, sometimes nearing eighty. In the middle of December, I saw families heading to the beach with little children in swim suits, toting sand buckets and shovels. On a warm Saturday night I attended the Siebert Realty holiday party, a festive affair at a north-end oceanfront hotel. Not needing coats, my date and I decided to enjoy cocktails and fancy hors d’ oeuvres on the balcony over-looking the boardwalk. People paraded along the walkway as if it were summer and I was shocked to see a woman dressed only in a bikini walking along as if she were not cold. In a way, the costumed Santas seemed more out of place than she did. The weather, indeed has been very, very strange.

After spending enough time on the balcony, Larry and I went inside and joined the convivial crowd. Mingling with hostess Jean Seibert and her friendly family and staff were some dressed up Sandbridge locals along with a few fun politicians. Among those attending were Tom and Sharon Fraim, Dave and Fran Dennis, Karen and Jerry Thomas, Lee and Kathy Gause, Tim and Crystal White, Pat and David Whitley, Beverly and Gene and Mike and Darlene Kwiatkowski, Emilie and Ed Palmer, Ellie and Bob Bell, Barbara Dougherty and good friend Barbie, Jim and Sally Reeve, Widgeon Lane’s Bob Walker and Hannah.

Another good gathering was St. Simon’s crazy gift exchange held in the condo party room next to the chapel. Baby Mason, grandson of Janet and Frank Meyer, was adored by all, especially Laurie and Keith Evans. Ellen and Terry McHugh were stylishly dressed and, one of the two, walked away with first place in the holiday sweater contest. Kim Ashby, who had recently won first place in the NAMIWalk fund raiser, brought her parents Don and Kay to the pot luck affair. Good food and wine added to the felicity of the Episcopalians and many interesting gifts were exchanged, sometimes over and over again.

There have been too many funerals of late, but some memorial services are more like an upbeat party where a life well-lived is celebrated and joyfully remembered. Such was true of Al Rohlfing’s January tribute. Every seat at Tabernacle Church was filled. Laughs and smiles blended with tears and words and stories of love for Al, who was everyone’s good friend. Hugs, good music, and country food for lunch helped us all feel better. Pat and Amy Barton, Ann Bohannon, Terry Douglas, Sharon and Ed Butts, Pat Burns, Joan and Casey Pool, John Monacci and Susan McClain are among the many friends who will, along with his family and dear companion Betty Wells, miss our lovely man Al.

Happy birthday to Gerri Bybee and Ann Beach. Sympathy to Margie Dowe and John Fox and Ginny Maloney and family. Congratulations to Dr. Bill Brown on his retirement. Good luck to Poki who has been nominated by Coastal Living magazine for “Best Beach Dog.” February is the month of LOVE.
