STUDENT PRINCIPAL FOR A DAY

For those of you who don’t know, on 3 June 2015 we had two student Principals for the day at Sanderson Middle School, who replaced our Principal Liz Veel (only for the day though.) They were Minyone Batende from Year 9 and Nikayla Price from Year 7. the Year 8. The student Principal, Ruben Morgado was sick on the day unfortunately. Throughout the day they helped accomplish many tasks to uphold our beautiful school reputation. They discussed and brought up issues within our school society that needed to be dealt with or fixed and had the privilege of seeing performances by the NT music school. They also had the opportunity to see many students hard at work during class time. Ebony Hollemans, SRC President said “As the President of the School Representative Council (SRC) I think they did an outstanding job. They met and exceeded the standard set for them and therefore represented the student body in a successful manner. Lena Burkala, SRC Vice-President said “I think they did a fantastic job of being role models and therefore set a great standard for other students at Sanderson Middle School.”

OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMP

From the 19 to 22 of May 26 students attended the

year 9 Outdoor Education camp at Kakadu

National Park. The camp consisted of a 3 day and

2 night stay at Kakadu National Park where

was awesome.’ Wade Derksen

DUKE OF EDINBURGH AWARD 2015

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a self-development program for young people aged between 14 to 25, that encourages participants to engage in activities that promote physical health and mental well-being. It is an opportunity for youth to create unforgettable memories, experience adventure, have fun and challenge themselves. It is an international award and worldwide there are almost 310, 000 new entrants every year, with over 635, 000 currently participating. At Sanderson Middle School we value the ability of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to empower youth and encourage leadership. The award recog-nises the importance of goal setting, hard work and time management. It encour-ages the development of behaviours that we believe encompasses well-rounded citizens. At Sanderson we offer students a range of opportunities to meet the re-quirements of the award and support students in their endeavour to meet the crite-ria set by the Duke of Edinburgh. The program recognises that a young person’s life education includes academic and non-academic activities and leads to recogni-tion of non-academic activities that contribute towards personal development. It counts towards the Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCET). This year we have had 14 students participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. An award ceremony for all Bronze and Silver participants will be held at Parliament House in early August.

SPORTS DAY

On 29 May we had an awesome Sports Day! It was a great day where we all did

heaps of fun physical activities and competed against each other. Some of the things we did were field events like, Javelin, Long Jump, Discus, Shot Put and High jump. If you didn’t like those types of event you could do novelty fun games like the Longest Kick, Tyre Relay, Egg and Spoon Relay and Tug of War. The Egg and Spoon Race was really funny because we used ping pong balls instead of eggs and it was really hard to run with them on a spoon against the wind. They kept falling off, slowing everyone down. The Tug of war competitions were pretty amazing as the girls won all tug of war matches!!!

It was a great day with heaps of running. There were a lot of heats for the 100m sprint where we all saw some really really fast runners!! The best relay was the teachers competing against the year 9 boys in the relay. Wayne, Chance, Zane and Wade all raced against, Miss Crossfield, Mr White, Mrs Pacey and Cameron from Clontarf. Mr White was REALLY fast! The year 9 boys won but

Ms Davy said that’s just because the teachers let them win! Red House were the winners of the day, but blue were amazing and should have won! Green and Yellow Houses were fan-tastic too!!

NAIDOC DAY

On 5 June Sanderson Middle School students celebrated NAIDOC in a day-long expression of the school’s Indigenous Language and Culture course. NAIDOC Week celebrations are usually held across Australia each year during the July school holidays, to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Our NAIDOC day was a great opportunity to participate in a range of Indigenous activities and to support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. Indigenous artists from our local community supported our Indigenous Language and Culture classes to deliver workshops to the entire school in playing the Yidaki, Torres Strait Islander dance, Yolngu Dance, Aboriginal painting and Indigenous Sports and a taste of kangaroo and damper. Sanderson Middle School is proud to support this day, as approximately 35% of our students are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. We are also proud that we have 8 staff who are Indigenous. The day ended with a fantastic range of performances, including a professional yidaki (didgeridoo) artist, Torres Strait Islander and Yolngu dances and a song from our school choir.

NEW NEIGHBOURHOOD ACTIVITY CENTRE

PLANNED FOR SANDERSON IN 2016

Last month an all-inclusive community program was launched by the Minister for Youth Territorians, Senior’s policy and Multicultural Affairs Peter Styles. Allocated in the 2015 budget, the Northern Territory Government has announced $1.2 million to establish as Neighbourhood Activity Centre in the Northern Suburbs at the Sanderson Middle School. The Sanderson Neighbourhood Activity Centre will be a whole-of-community initiative that will encourage greater engagement between young people, senior Territorians and the broader multicultural community in the northern suburbs of Darwin. Commencing in 2016, the Sanderson NAC will offer a range of activities after school hours and on weekends facilitated by experienced volunteer experts and hosts. The local business community along with community groups, government agencies and non-government organisa-tions will be encouraged to participate to help fuel capacity to the activities that will be on offer. Funding for the project will be administerd by the Sanderson Middle School Council with a Director and support staff appointed to facilitate the administration of the centre, coordinate vol-unteers to run and host activities and to coordinate and manage the consumables and re-source’s that will be required. Starting in term 3 this year the Sanderson NAC will undertake a series of consultations with the identified target groups to ascertain ideas for activities, scope for volunteers and the resources required to run activities sustainably. Community consultations will take place at the school, local shopping centres and parks and will also include information workshops after hours at the Sanderson Middle School. Initial conversations have already commenced regarding the framework to develop the centre which includes the establishment of an advisory committee to represent stakeholder groups from right across the spectrum of government, community and the private sector. Initial activity ideas range from computing and gaming, dance and theatre performance shows, homework club, a Saturday morning café and mini market, non-traditional sports and development of the vacant block on the corner of Matthews Road and Patterson Street for educational and recreational space. If you are interested in getting involved with the Sanderson Neighbourhood Activity Centre or would like to join the SMS School Council please contact the Director Paul Wyatt on 0407 454131 or email [email protected]

SANDERSON SHINES

On 11 June Sanderson Middle School was proud to

host our extremely successful community event

‘Sanderson Shines’. Sanderson absolutely shone

with a huge turn out of people, a delicious array of

mouth watering international food and an excellent

evening of entertainment from many of SMS and Pri-

mary school students and the NT Music School band.

Our student Master of Ceremonies did an

excellent job of keeping the performances on track.

Thank you Ebony Hollemans and Jane Lodiong.

The Sanderson School Senior band, the Sanderson

Rock Band and the Sanderson Choir turned on

amazing performances. The Sanderson Dancers

were inspiring and their excellent performances

were a result of long hours of practice under the guidance of Mrs Jenny

McCullough and Ms Robyn Gleeson. Karama Primary School and Wulagi

Primary School also brought over their student

band members. How fabulous that these young

artists will be joining the Sanderson Middle School

band when they arrive at Middle School. The

Malak Primary dancing troupe were also colourful

and entertaining.

A big highlight of the night was the combined

student drumming performance led by Shabba, a

talented West African musician. Many thanks to the

Smith Family for bringing Shabba to us.

An ex student of

Sanderson, Liam Stansfield sang 2 amazing songs

and brought a professional sound.

The Administrator of the NT, His Honour the Hon-

ourable John Hardy OAM and his wife attended.

They were amazed by the talent of our students

and the positive energy. of our school community.
