FASCINATING ISLANDVISITORS

During the festive days ofholiday comings and goings ourminds were centered on the youthof the nation making their massexodus from northern collegesto relax and enjoy the lazy warmthof sun drenched Florida shoresbut we have found that the most

, fascinating visitors to find theirway across the Sanibel Causewayhave been the professors alsoseeking a respite from the bleakwinter weather.

Among the recent visitorswere Mr. & Mrs. Livingston Halltaking their hiatus from Mass-achusetts ice and snow and theirduties at two of New Englandsfiner colleges. They were travel-ing in leisurely fashion by camp-er, sampling a different area ofFlorida every dayuntiltheyfoundSanibel and thought it worthy of anextended stay. Though they bothhold Doctorates they prefer thetitle of Mr. & Mrs. outside theacademic world. In the profess-ional world Dr. Livingston Hallis a professor of Criminal Lawat Harvard University and Dr.Elizabeth Hall is founder andpresident of Simons Rock Collegeat Great Barrington, Mass. Theyare both vitally interested in to-day's educational problems, whatis happening now and what willhappen tomorrow.

Dr. Elizabeth has long been a

champion of a more progressiveattitude In the educational fieldand in 1966 opened the new andrevolutionary Simons Rock Col-lege with students who had fin-ished tenth grade in High School, offering the curriculum of a fouryear college. She objects to theschool being called a Jr. College, which it is not, nor is it a schoolfor accelerated students. Herwell developed theory is that ouryouth of today mature much earl-ier in the social, emotional andphysical sense than at any othertime in our history and thereforeare capable of meeting the chal-lenges of the academic world atan earlier age. She feels thatyouth today are better informedgenerally through our broadmeans of communication andhave, and I quote: "The powersof execution which far exceedstheir powers of judgement andperception and this makes them apotentially dangerous gener-ation."

Her college is geared to de-veloping the potential capabilitiesof students by, and again I quote:"taking young people out of aprolonged childhood and the gath-ering of academic credits that ourpresent system of four years ofHigh School and four years ofcollege now demand and affordingthem an earlier seasoning towardlife that their vigor deserves."With the lowering of the votingage in the forseeable future shefeels it is an essential prere-

Mrs. Hall interrupted h e rChristmas vacation to fly backto New York to appear on theToday Show to tell the listeningnation of this innovating ventureand those of us who watched fromSanibel heartily commended herdedication not only in giving ofher precious vacation time buther active concern with this vitalproblem.

She flew back to rejoin Mr.Hall and they continued their lei-surely pursuit of shelling andbirding. Both share a keen en-thusiasm for all natures worldand thoroughly enjoyed exploringthe bird sanctuaries, beach shell-ing on both Islands and dredgingfor shells in San Carlos and Es-tero Bays.

It was indeed a stimulatingexperience to have crossed their

T>aths but also very heartening toknow that the guidance of at leastsome of our future generationrests in such capable hands.

ALWAYS ROOM FOR MORE

Gall and Jim Magulre, of Tar-pon Bay Marina, didn't plan anexpandable house when they builttheir floating home on Tarpon Baybut this Christmas they found thatwith a will, and a bit of juggling, there can always be room for onemore. It started out slowly withplans to make 4 month old MarkDavid's first Christmas a mem-orable one. A fragrant tall pinetree was decorated with tinseland lights weeks before Christ-mas, gaily wrapped gifts grew inprofusion under its branches andChristams carols gently filled theair of their cozy houseboat. Thenone day they got word from theChildrens Home In Fort Myersthat their request to have severalchildren for a weekend had finallycleared. With Christmas so near.Gail and Jim asked that a familyof three children plus a single boybe allowed to spend the Christmasholidays. Now more gifts wereplaced under the tree and planswere soon in the making to havea Christmas Eve carol sing andsupper to add an extra note of

ISLANDERgaiety for their a d d i t i o n a l"Christmas Children," for nowthey were a family of seven. All20 friends who were fitted into thesnug quarters afloat on TarponBay agreed that this was indeedChristmas Eve redolent of themagic of childhood* Trudy, Rose,Jordan andTroy, their eyes fill-ed with wo'nder- at the presents, the huge tree, but best of all thateverybody was being so good tothem. Plans were being made forafter Christmas fun too; shelling, boating, fishing, an air-boat ride, and yes, even swimming. Theyknew this was the best Christmasthey had ever had in the wholeworld. They didn't know grown-ups could be so nice.

The day after Christmas theirson Dick arrived from George-town University with six of hisfriends. All seven boys had at-tended St. Joseph's CollegiateInstitute in Buffalo but only twowere going to the same collegeso not only was this a Christmasvacation but a reunion as well.John Korzelius and Nick Magyar-ies are attending .Canisius Col-leget Mark Zehnder is at John

Carroll University, Joe Scaffldiis at the University of Buffalo,Mike Murphy is at State Univer-sity of New York and Larry Grif-fis Is finishing at St. Joseph'sCollegiate Institute.

By now the Magulre familyhad miraculously grown toJfour-teen and they were beginning tostretch the seams as sleepingbags and extra blankets werepressed Into service and the airaround the Red Pelican and Mar-ina docks rang with that specialcheer that only a group of happycongenial young men can bring.Everyone pitched In with chores,KP, making beds, even to takingcare of Mark David, leaving plen-ty of time for fun. The generationgap was non-exlstant through thelong span of age groups fromMark David's four months, to the12 to 15 years of the "ChristmasChildren," to the 18 to 20 yearsof the young college adults to themiddle generation who prefer toremain ageless. Being exposedto this sampling of our future gen-erations belies all the publishedconcerns of the direction theseyoung minds are heading towards.

Given a place where they couldbe themselves in a relaxed familyclimate; given a chance to ex-press their views In the know-ledge that they would be listenedto although not necessarily a-greed with but above all giventhe freedom to make their ownmistakes assures their growthinto a kind of maturity that weadults think we have achieved. This and more was apparentthrough out the two week periodwhen three generations felt thefull impact of Christmas.

The snug little houseboat onTarpon Bay is slowly riding high-er in the water as goodbyes aresaid and children head back toroutine living: The Christmasfamily are back in their For tMyers substitute home with theirheads brimming over with thekindness of grown-ups; the col-lege youth heading back to variousschools with a renewed drive anddetermination to make this thekind of world we all dream of;and Gall and Jim, though lonely, have Mark David to fill the voidwith love and plans for yet an-other generation.

It was awonderous Christmasin one corner of .Sanibel.

To The Islander:When we arrived at Sanibel

recently for a brief winter va-cation, we were given a copy ofyour paper in which we read withinterest the story of Dr. MordecaiHaber's having started a medicalpractice on the Island. One daylater, my wife became ill, with afever going as high as 102. Re-membering the article in yourpaper, I phoned Dr. Haber and,in spite of the fact that it wasChristmas Day, he agreed to ex-amine her that very day. Withina few days her condition wasgreatly improved, thanks to Dr.Haber.

I certainly am glad that I hadtaken the time to read about Dr.Haber in your paper and I wish tocongratulate all the good peopleof Sanibel on having among thema physician as capable, as thor-ough, and as humane as Dr. Hab-er.

TELEPHONE RATES DISCUSSED

The Board of Directors of the Sanibel Captiva Islands Chamber ofCommerce at the last Board meeting held Dec. 29 invited represent-atives of the United Telephone Company to discuss the problems of thetelephone service on the Islands, and also why Sanibel and Captiva werenot receiving the toll free service to Fort Myers and other areas aswere Fort Myers Beach, Cape Coral, Pine Island, etc. Mr. OUarrow, district commercial manager, and Mr. Chas McCormick, general com-mercial engineer, explained that one of the reasons for the inability ofIslanders to even reach an operator over the Christmas season, was thatlike everyone else, they were Just jammed up with the biggest touristboom they have ever had; that there had been a 20% Increase In tele-phone on the Islands in the last year, and their present facilities werejammed, and that they were working continually to try to improve se r -vice, — more lines, and more installation at the telephone station hereon Sanibel.

President Rush worth asked why we were not receiving the toll freeto Fort Myers service as were the other places and they replied thatthey had spoken to a couple of businessmen about this several yearsago, and he had informed them that Sanibel was not ready for it, as thepeople would not pay a small Increased monthly rate for it. They wereinformed that they should have contacted the Chamber of Commerce inthis matter, and that the Chamber would have made a survey, and dis-covered whether this would have been feasible or not. It takes between18 months and two years to make the necessary change over, as morelines must be added, the switchboards at all stations and main officewould have to be changed, and that if we found that a majority of thesubscribers wanted this service, it would be made available.

Sanibel has four different rates which are Business 1 and Business2, Resident 1 and Resident 2 and are charged according to where t h etelephone lines are extended. The basic charges are as follows:

B 1B 2R 1R 2PBX TK

Sanibel-Captiva$10.65

8.906.805.75

17.55

$11.159.407.306.25

18.05

Fort$14.55

11.008.507.10

21.83

Myers$15.05

11.509.007.60

22.33

Increase$3.90

2.101.701.354.28

This is the rates that we now pay, and you will note that they arecheaper than in Fort Myers. This rate increase is over basic rates, which is subject to change, as could be lowered, but will probably beraised, as the rates are regulated and set by the Florida Public UtilityCommission, and they are studying a rate Increase now.

With a toll free service to Fort Myers and areas, this will cut downon all calls In this area having to go through the Fort Myers switch-board, and would thereby cut down on the calls being handled by oper-ators, and alleviate much of the jammed lines in trying to reach anoperator, and result in having much better service.

If, after much discussion with telephone customers on our Islands,we feel that a majority of phone customers want this toll free service, the Chamber will make a survey. It is necessary to have a majority ofall names and phone numbers to send to Mr. Wm. Mayo, Public ServiceCommission to start the ball rolling. Please make your wishes knownto the Chamber Board members.

Board members are: Jack Rushworth, President, Ph. 2-3161; DanMoore, Treasurer, Pho 2.5371; Mary Funk, Secretary, Ph. 2-3361;Floyd Snook, Ph. 2-8861; Wm. Snyder, Ph. 2-6471; Mark McClintock,Ph. 2-2321 and Jerry Martin, Ph. 2-4951.

TOLLS FROM SANIBEL-CAPE CORAL BRIDGES AIN'T HAY

The ticket books that became available last October 1 sold an amaz-ing $25,856 worth to December's last day. Making the $3 toll only $2,they represent a saving to local drivers of $12,928 according to HarryElliot, who is In charge of Sanibel's and Cape Coral's toll bridges. Tot-al Income for both bridges for the last three months of 1969 was$147,780, $10,000 below the $157,986 income predicted by EngineersFord, Bacon and Davis.

That first sum, $25,856 is still a lot of money and one can hardlyweep for the collectors. After all, $131,186 was received for both bridg-es In the first quarter of fiscal 1968-1969, so there was an increase of$16,594 In spite of the commuter ticket sales.
