    those found at giza,on the outskirts ofcairo.several of the giza pyramids are

    counted among the largest structures everbuilt.

    By the time of the early dynastic period of egyptian history,those with

    sufficient means were buried in bench-like structures known as mastabas. The second historically documented egyptian pyramid is attributed to the

    architect Imhotep,who planned what egyptologists believe to be a tombfor the pharoh djoser.imhotep is credited with being the first to conceivethe notion of stacking mastabas on top of each other-creating an edficecomposed of a number of stepsthat decreased in size towards inapex.the result was the step pyramid of djoser-which was designed toserve as a gigantic stairway by which the soul of the deceased pharaohcould ascend to the heavens.such was the importance of imhotepsachievements that he was deified by later egyptians.

    The most prolific pyramid-building phase coincided with the greatest

    degree of absolutist pharaonic rule.it was during this time that the mostfamous pyramids, those near giza, were built.overtime,as authoritybecame less centralized,the ability and willingness to harness theresources required for construction on a massive scale decreased,andlater pyramids were smaller,less well-built and often hastily constructed.

    Al-azizuthman,son of the great saladin who crushed the crusaders,tried to

    demolish the great pyramids of giza , but had to give up because the taskwas too big.however, he did succeed in damaging menkaures pyramid.

    The shape of egyptian pyramids is thought to represent theprimordial mound from which the egyptian belived the earth was

    created. the shape of pyramids is thought to be representative of the

    descending raise of the sun,and most pyramids were faced withpolished,highly reflective whitelimestone,in order to give them abrillint apperence when viewd from a distance pyramids were often

    also named in ways that refered to solar luminescence .forexample ,the formal name of the bent pyramid at dahshur thesouthen shining pyramid ,and that of see worst at el-lahun was senworset in east shining.

    While it generally agreed that pyramids were burial

    monuments,there is continued disagreement on the particulartheological principals that might have given rise to them.Onetheory is that they were designed as a type of resurrectionmachine .

    The egyptians believed the dark area of the night sky around whichthe stars appear to ressolve was the physical gateway in to theheavens.one of the narrow shathat extends from the main burial

    In1842 karl richard lepsius producedthe first modern list of pyramids.inwhich he counted 67.A great many

    more have since been discovered .As ofnovember 2008,118 egyptian pyramidshave been identified.
