A SIGNIFICANT DAY

THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT ON THE APOSTLES

T he Holy Spirit appeared under the form of tongues of fire in order to fill the Apostles with truth and to prepare them to bear witness

DIVINUM ILLUS MUNUS

W e ought to pray to and invoke the Holy Spirit, for each one of us greatly needs His protec-

tion and His help. The more a man is deficient in wis-dom, weak in strength, borne down with trouble, prone to sin, so ought he the more to fly to Him who is the never-ceasing fount of light, strength, consola-tion, and holiness. And chiefly that first requisite of man, the forgiveness of sins, must be sought for from Him: "It is the special character of the Holy Ghost that He is the Gift of the Father and the Son. Now the re-mission of all sins is given by the Holy Ghost as by the Gift of God. " Concerning this Spirit the words of the Liturgy are very explicit: "For He is the remission of all sins." How He should be invoked is clearly taught by the Church, who addresses Him in humble suppli-cation, calling upon Him by the sweetest of names: "Come, Father of the poor! Come, Giver of gifts! Come, Light of our hearts! O best of Consolers, sweet Guest of the soul, our refreshment!" She earnestly im-plores Him to wash, heal, water our minds and hearts, and to give to us who trust in Him "the merit of virtue, the acquirement of salvation, and joy everlasting." Nor can it be in any way doubted that He will listen to such prayer, since we read the words written by His own inspiration: "The Spirit Himself asketh for us with unspeakable groanings" (Rom. viii., 26). Lastly, we ought confidently and continually to beg of Him to illuminate us daily more and more with His light and inflame us with His charity: for, thus inspired with faith and love, we may press onward earnestly towards our eternal reward, since He "is the pledge of our inheritance" (Eph. i. 14). Excerpted from Leo XIII's encylical letter on the unity of the Church, Divinum illud munus, 9 May, 1897.

BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART

Y outh is a time of life when your desire for a love which is genuine, beautiful and expansive

begins to blossom in your hearts. How powerful is this ability to love and to be loved! Do not let this precious treasure be debased, destroyed or spoiled. That is what happens when we start to use our neigh-bours for our own selfish ends, even as objects of pleasure. Hearts are broken and sadness follows upon these negative experiences. I urge you: Do not be afraid of true love, the love that Jesus teaches us and which Saint Paul describes as “patient and kind”. Paul says: “Love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not in-

sist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Cor 13:4-8). In encour-aging you to rediscover the beauty of the human vocation to love, I also urge you to rebel against the widespread tendency to reduce love to some-thing banal, reducing it to its sexual aspect alone, deprived of its essential characteristics of beauty, communion, fidelity and responsibility. Dear young friends, “in a culture of relativism and the ephemeral, many preach the importance of ‘enjoying’ the mo-ment. They say that it is not worth making a life-long commitment, making a definitive decision, ‘for ever’, because we do not know what tomorrow will bring. I ask you, instead, to be revolutionaries, I ask you to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rebel against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes you are incapable of responsibility, that believes you are incapable of true love. I have confidence in you and I pray for you. Have the courage to ‘swim against the tide’. And also have the courage to be happy” (Meeting with the Vol-unteers of the XXVIII Word Youth Day, 28 July 2013). You young people are brave adventurers! If you allow yourselves to discover the rich teachings of the Church on love, you will discover that Christianity does not consist of a series of prohibitions which stifle our desire for happiness, but rather a project for life capable of captivating our hearts. Excerpt from “Message from His Holiness Pope Francis for the Thirtieth World Youth Day 2015.” From the Vatican, 31 January 2015.

DO AS HE ASKS

I n John’s Gospel, we hear the story of the Wed-ding Feast at Cana. Mary, seeing that the couple

at the Wedding Feast had run out of wine, interceded on their behalf to Jesus. After Jesus’ response, Mary turns and tells the servants, “Do whatever he tel ls you” (Jn 2:5). These words are the last words of Mary recorded in the Gospels. In them, we see a summation of the en-tire Gospel. We see a profound faith, which believes that with Jesus, anything is possible because he is God. We see a profound trust, which gives Jesus a simple request and leaves it entirely up to him how he will respond- there are no suggestions. We see a heart so completely given to Jesus that we have no doubts that her will is completely and inseparably united to his. She tells us exactly what she wants done- “Do whatever he tells you.” Written by Br. Benedict Mary Geist, O.S.B.

PREVENTING CHILD ABUSE

I t is every adult’s moral responsibility to protect possible victims by reporting suspected abuse or

neglect to the responsible authori-ties. Sexual abuse of minors is a pervasive, societal problem, and only rigorous and sustained efforts by all adults in every segment of society can help to protect children and youth. The State of California’s Office of Child Abuse Prevention website contains helpful information about how to report abusive behavior and provides contact information of local authorities: http://www.childsworld.ca.gov/PG2289.htm. For particular help you may call the Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Atrévanse a “ir contracorriente”.
