Hello Fellow Rockhounds,
For those of you who haven't heard, It is my sad
duty to inform you of the passing of life member
Marc Mullaney. Marc was very active in the club,
serving several positions on the board including
president for several years. He also ran some of the
study groups and was an avid collector and field trip
leader. He will be sorely missed.
I hope everyone had a good time at the Founder’s
Day Picnic. I would like to thank Sonia Dyer and
everyone who stepped up to help her. Thanks to all
of you who brought prizes for the raffle and Bingo.
If you were not able to be there, I urge you to plan
go next year. It is always a good time with excellent
food and camaraderie.
If you have not paid your dues, please send them to
Chuck Boblenz if you plan to continue being a
member of the club. If you do not plan to continue
your membership, please let us know. Delinquent
notices will go out soon. Those who do not renew
their membership will also be dropped from the
mailing list.
I hope all of you are taking advantage of this nice weath-
er to go on some collecting trips. There are several trips
planned by other clubs, which they are willing to share.
There is a list here in the Breccia. If you see something
that interests you, send an e-mail to Stephen May at
[email protected] and he will send you the
information you seek.
As there will not be a Breccia in August, let me take this
opportunity to urge you all to think of ways to serve the
club. Many of the current officers have been in office for
many years. This is my third consecutive term as
president and I have been in office for almost all of my
years in the club. Elections are coming up in November.
Please consider an officer or board position when the
Nominating Committee calls in September. This is your
club. It works better when more people are involved.
I hope everyone is having a great summer.
Randy Harris, President

Check Out What Our Study Groups Are Doing
Smithies Smithies continue to experience torch work,
now aiming to make a bezel and solder it onto
a backplate for a pendant.
Different types of bezel wire will be offered
for practice and techniques for wrapping the
bezel wire around the cab. Backplate styles
will be explored — plain, textured, cutout.
After bezels and backplates, and bails, we will
have a pendant.
Smithies meet the first and second Friday of
each month from 4-7pm in our backyard.
Smithie classes are aimed at the beginner to
give a solid background for further
exploration.
For further exploration. We have equipped
workbenches for five students in a
comfortable, friendly atmosphere.
If you are interested or have questions, please
let me know.
Thanks,
Pat

Show and Tell Members’ Displays
All members are asked to display at least one time
per year, but you may display as many times as
you like. There are no displays in May and
November because of the Silent Auctions. There
are no displays in December because there is the
installation dinner in lieu of our regular meeting.
The displays at our monthly meetings are enjoyed
very much. Don’t know what to display? Any
type of rock, mineral, or fossil (identified or not),
your latest project, information on a field trip to
take, ideas for a display case, anything to do with
rocks!!!
Kevin Schlosberg brought some opalized
Petrified Wood, a Hallelujah Junction Quartz
crystal, and a large piece of Petrified Wood.
Jim Herbold brought a couple of antique Riker
boxes with Topaz crystals from Utah and a
brightly fluorescent Texas Springs limb cast.
Victor Gassman brought a Molybdenite specimen
from the Moore Creek mine near Garnet Hill,
Calaveras County, CA, his first ever purchase, a
piece of Mexican Crazy Lace Agate, and an uncut
Mexican Geode.
Rick Kennedy brought a sample of the Quartz he
dug at the recently finished project at Hallelujah
Junction.

Founder’s Day Picnic
Our club’s 2017 Founder’s Day Picnic was
held at the Belwood Cabana Club on Sunday,
June 25. It was well-attended and the weather
was gorgeous.
Michael Paone served as our chef-
extraordinaire, with other helpers including
Stephen and Alan May, Cal Hansen, Frank
Mullaney, Jo Borucki, and Victor Gassmann.
Having many helpers made light work for
everyone.
After stuffing ourselves on tri-tip and BBQ
chicken and many styles of potato salad, we
all had fun with the prize drawings for left-
over door-prizes from the spring show, plus
our usual fun time playing bingo for (what
else?) rocks.

ROCKHOUND SOAPBOX M -44: Who, What, When and How John Martin – CFM S PLAC
plac@ antelecom.net
Thanks to Keith Fackrell, 1st V ice President of the Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies and Lauren Williams, Vice President of the American Lands Access Association for bringing this issue to my attention.
While Rockhounding on Public Lands, mostly in the Western States, and on private lands, with the permission of the land owner, be aware that the M -44 in use in areas where coyote, feral dogs and other predator wildlife are a threat to grazing livestock and domestic farm and ranch animals. If a M -44 devise is found, “Let it B e”, Do not touch, consider it as a “Live Bomb” – because it is and it can Kill People and domestic dogs!
Safety tips for people to follow are talked about, discussed and even published. Some people are trained to take care of most dangers that are encountered while hiking, camping and, yes, even rock hunting. O ne danger that I have never seen on a list of safety tips out there is the M -44. In some areas where Rock Hounds are, there may be an M -44 "cyanide bomb", which is EXTREMELY LETHAL!
T he M 44 cyanide device (also called a 'cyanide gun' or a 'cyanide trap') is used for the elimination of coyotes, feral dogs, and foxes. It is made from four parts: a capsule holder wrapped with cloth or other soft material, a small plastic capsule containing 0.88 grams of sodium cyanide, a spring-powered ejector, and a 5-7 inch stake. W hen the trap is triggered, the spring propels a dose of sodium cyanide into the animals’ mouth, and the sodium cyanide combines with water in the mouth to produce poisonous cyanide gas. In addition to the cyanide, the capsule contains D ay-G lo fluorescent particle marker (orange in capsules used by the Wildlife Service, and yellow in capsules prepared for other users).
T he M -44 consists of a capsule holder, a cyanide capsule, a spring-activated e j e c t o r , and a s t a k e . Bilingual signs warn about the device. W hen the trap is set, only the capsule holder and capsule protrude above ground level.
T he M -44 device uses a cyanide capsule that is registered as a restricted-u se pesticide by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can be used only by trained certified
applicators . Wildlife Service Officers are authorized to use M -44 cyanide capsules to control coyotes, wild (feral) dogs, and red, gray, and arctic foxes which are: suspected of preying upon livestock, poultry, or federally designated threatened and endangered spe-cies; or are vectors of communicable disease. T he program’s use of M -44 devices strictly conforms to EPA label instructions, directions, and use-restrictions; applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations; and agency and program directives and policies.
12 Santa Clara Valley Gem and Mineral Society
San Jose, CA
Breccia
July 2017
Wildlife Service personnel do not use M -44s on any property unless requested by the land’s owner or manager; a valid written cooperative agreement, agreement for control, Memoranda of Agreement, or other applicable document must be in place. U SD A Fact Sheet – 2010: https://www.aphis.usda.gov/publications/wildlife damage/content/printable_version/fs_m44_device.pdf
Bottom Line: W hen Rockhounding, be aware of your surroundings and if one of these M -44 devices are found, keep away. If you have your pets with you, be sure to keep a close eye on them. Pet dogs have been known to find and set off these devices and in most cases it is fatal for your family pet.
I have sent inquires to 4 state legislators and 3 federal legislators asking what the status of the M -44 usage is in California. I have not received any response as of this being published.
