What I like about Christmas is that it is a time to celebrate Jesus’ birthday. I like the toys and the stuff you get to make. We also go on vacation.

In celebration of the Christmas holiday this year, Wave reporters Kayla Meyer, Melony Overton and Ross Stapp interviewed students in Calhoun County about their favorite part of Christmas.

The students were in kindergarten, first, second and third grades at HJM Elementary School, Jackson-Roosevelt Elementary School, Our Lady of the Gulf Catholic School, Port O’Connor Elementary School and Seadrift School.

said with a smile, referring to one of Disney’s newest princess-es.

Before she could elaborate further on her Christmas wish-es, she dashed off to play with friends.

Sue Traylor, the president of the Point Comfort UMC board, said the church has been having hayrides and getting together for the holidays for over half a cen-tury.

“It’s probably been 55 years,” Traylor said about the events. “There were just a group of us who were young at the time and had young children, and we decided it would be fun.”

In its early years, the groups

would travel a short distance north to sing to people in the Olivia area, but due to travel hazards, they decided to carol in Point Comfort.

Typically in years past, those heading out on the hayride would do so before visiting with Santa Claus. This year, the sched-ule had to be rearranged, but no one seemed to mind. Santa, they said, had a previously booked en-gagement in Port Lavaca.

“And in all the years, I can only remember three years that we had to stay in the church be-cause of the weather,” Traylor said.

“We try to go all over,” she added about the hayrides. “We just sort of make the rounds around town.”

Santa gave the children a bag filled with goodies, and most parents instructed their little ones to eat their chilidog or Frito pie before diving into the sweets treats.

At the end of the evening, Point Comfort UMC Pastor Danielle Knapp reflected on the events and what they mean for the community.

“It’s just a really fun way to share the love of Jesus with our neighbors,” she said.
