We will combine our April membership meeting with the April 26th Dave Nielson Memorial Play Day - see page 6. Come out to ride in the fun games planned or watch the from the stands. A snack bar will be available, and an evening dinner for $10 will be prepared by the Monterey Bay Therapeutic Riding Center. NEWSLETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT To my way of thinking, there’s no better horse than a “babysitter” or “grandparent.” I saw an excellent example last weekend at the American Competitive Trail Horse Association ride that SCCHA sponsored in Henry Cowell. (We hit the only nice day in the long, rainy weekend and the ride went off without a hitch.) A junior rider, Sam Peacock, rode up with his mother, Heather, to the fourth obstacle, “the Spanish pole.” The aluminum pole, about 12 feet long, was leaning up against a tree – like a limb that had fallen, blocking the trail. The rider had to lift the pole slightly, ride under it, turn their horse on the forehand and replace the pole. A half dozen riders that had come before Sammie had dropped the pole, and their horses had opted to head for the next county. Sam’s horse, Don Juan, was an older gentleman, missing some teeth, a bit arthritic. “He cost $800,” Sam told us. But Don Juan was perfect. Sam was at a disadvantage – he couldn’t reach the pole where it was easiest to balance and get under. The result was that the pole bounced a few times off Don Juan’s neck before hitting the ground. Neither Sammie or Don Juan was the slightest bit phased. That, my friends, is a great horse and rider team. Please welcome and thank three new wonderful directors to the SCCHA board – Debbie Boscoe, Elise Levinson, and Jaime Donato. All three are long time SCCHA members who have already contributed a lot to the club. I look forward to their ideas, energy and contributions. The mild winter and lack of rain has been a boon for gophers – they’ve tak- en over – and we’re trying to regain the occupied territory. We’ve trapped eight on the Showgrounds in the past week. Last weekend, my husband Howard, moved logs and dug down about two feet, laying the soil back. Then he used heavy equipment to compact the ground, crushing gopher tunnels, and moved the soil back. An hour later, six inches from where he finished, a gopher popped up. Howard is taking it personally. Another gopher (the name Howard has given it can’t be repeated here) has evaded three sets of traps. At one, the gopher pushed dirt up closing the tunnel behind him, without getting near the trap. We’re employing various tactics. Howard diverted water running down the cross county course into a gopher hole. The water erupted about 70 feet away out of another hole. I would love to see their underground infrastructure. So, if you know any gopher tricks, please share. Our next workday, we need people to go fill in the big holes where hoses have stepped into them. Onward. To my way of thinking, there’s no better horse than a “babysitter” or “grandparent.” I saw an excellent example last weekend at the American Competitive Trail Horse Association ride that SCCHA sponsored in Henry Cowell. THE 2014-15 BOARD OF DIRECTORS This year’s Board retains 8 of it’s past directors: Kristi Harwell, Jeanette Moretti, Mary Sullivan-White, Leslie Jaquith, Karen Keener, Val Riegel, Mardi Moore and Melissa Broquard, and President, Robin Musitelli. Welcome to our three new directors, Elise Levinson, Debbie Boscoe and Jamie Donato. Contact in-formation for all on our our back page and website.

Huge thanks to outgoing directors PT Reap and Peggy O’Shea, and past president, Claudia Goodman.

PT served on the board for two years, bringing the wisdom of a unique and varied lifetime with horses to our discussions.

Peggy served as calendar secretary - a very busy post - as well as newsletter distributor for all of her three years on the board, and also managed to volunteer at many club events. Perhaps most challenging has been her role as a main Fireworks Ride Organizer, a job Peggy will continue to do.

Claudia will continue to be newsletter editor, but has retired from the board. Having become director back in 1996, and hav-ing served 5 years as President since 2003, she is ready to find new ways to complicate her life, with Silhouette by her side.

Our club has been asked to reduce water usage by 20% due to this year’s drought. We are, in turn, ask-ing members to conserve water as much as possible at the Showgrounds. One way is to wash down horses with buckets, rather than running hoses at the wash rack. To this end, hoses at the wash rack are being removed. Bring Buckets & Sponges!

Thanks to the March 22nd Work Day Volunteers for their work on cross country & obstacle courses, storage shed, and weed whacking around the clubhouse. They installed 3 new jumps: log, bank, and ditch jumps. Volunteers also moved bridges, and created some new obstacles on

the cross country course. Volunteers included: Cori Altman, Elise Levinson, Cody Hill, Val Riegel, Kristi Harwell, Lindsey Overton, Jane Brown, Leslie Jaquith, Howard Liebenberg &

Robin Musitelli, Linda & Steve Richmond, Carla & James Bowen, and Liz Riehl.

Crystal, who was born and raised in Santa Cruz, owned a variety of horses, mules and donkeys since she was old enough to ride. Growing up in the coun-try and surrounded by horses as a youth, Crystal was fortunate to experience what most young girls can only dream.!

In 1981 Crystal purchased her first mammoth jack donkey (“Cocky Doodle” from Montana) and shortly afterwards her second donkey (“Dry Gulch Michelle” from Oregon). After that she started gradually trading in her horses for the longears.!

Predominately a western rider, she also competed in English (hunt seat), driving, both English and western side-saddle riding. Crystal has been competing in equine events since 1969 including literally hundreds of parades throughout the United States. She rode in the 1989 Presidential Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C., Oregon’s Rose Festival Parade, Arizona’s Fiesta Bowl Parade, and eighteen consecutive (18) Tourna-ment of Roses Parades in Pasadena, California.!

Crystal dedicated her entire lifetime with equines, from training, breeding and running a boarding facili-ty, which amounts to nearly five decades of equine involvement. In 1997 The Ass-Pen Ranch opened its doors to the public, designed with both breeding and training in mind.!

Crystal was a judge in the following Associations: American Mule Assn. - since 1995, National Miniature Donkey Assn. - since 1996, North American Saddle

Mule Assn. - (Senior Judge) - since 1995, American-Donkey and Mule Society - since 1985, International Side-Saddle Organization - since 1981 and American-Miniature Horse Assn. - since 1993.!

She was instrumental in having the public become aware of the donkeys and burros that have suffered through countless decades of abuse and neglect through the hands of mankind and in the wilds through environmental stress and harsh conditions. Her dedication will be honored with an Interactive Educational Center named after her at the Peaceful Valley Donkey Rescue Visitors Center in Texas.!

Crystal enjoyed working in her garden, making jewel-ry, home improvement projects and had become inter-ested in geology and rock collecting. She recently had set up a rock shop in an Airstream trailer.!

She is survived by her father Harold Ward and brother Steve Ward. Preceded in death by her mother Norma Ward and her brother Greg Ward.!

Private services will be held by her family. A Celebra-tion of Life with friends will be planned once a final investigation report is completed from the incident. Bishop Mule Days will include her in their “Empty Saddles” memorial.!

Donations may be made to your favorite equine res-cue, equine organization or club in her memory.!

Cards and remembrances can be sent to: Harold Ward, P.O. Box 9504, South Lake Tahoe, CA 96158.
