You need to pick up one of those magnifying glasses.

Oh, and a trench coat. You want to close cold cases and fight crime, so those must be mandatory, right? Trench coat, magnifying glass, catch killers, solve crimes, and that’s what it takes to be a P.I. Or you need to read “Becoming a Private Inves-tigator” by Howie Kahn. No big surprise: your favorite TV detective show has every-thing wrong. On television, the P.I. is usually looking for a murderer; in real-ity, says Kahn, private investigators deal with a variety of issues that need deeper research than perhaps most people are able to do. On television, P.I.s are al-ways broke; in reality, they make up to $500,000 on bigger jobs. TV crimes are solved in an hour, minus commercials; in real life, a private investigator might work on a case for years. If you think it’s a career for a person with patience, you’re right: private in-vestigators are research experts and can unravel the most knotted facts, they’re flexible, and they know how to read people. They’re also good at “disrupting” stalled investigations, a talent that police

sometimes hate. P.I.s are able to think sideways to spot clues, and they have the tenacity of ten terriers. A s for the industry itself,

Kahn cites the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which states that “projected occupational growth rate” is 11 percent, which is much higher than for other jobs. Three years ago, the U.S. boasted more than 40,000 work-ing private inves-tigators, all of which, presum-ably, are licensed,

since the majority of America’s states have strict re-

quirements on licensure. To give readers an idea of what it’s like to work as a private investigator, Kahn followed two P.I.s, one in Tennessee and one in Texas. The former became a private eye after helping to solve the murder of her former roommate; she wanted to quit when it was over until she realized that her expertise was still needed. The Texas P.I. gained his skills while in the military, and he shares with Kahn a case that still dogs him…Readers who come to this book for ca-reer advice will be quite surprised at “Becoming a Private Investigator,” for two big reasons.

While this series of guidebooks is gen-erally meant for high school students and adults looking for career changes, this one focuses almost entirely on the latter. Indeed, both of author Howie Kahn’s profiled P.I.s are older adults who started their respective careers well past their high-school years. Yes, teens will glean information here but adults will benefit more. The other truly pleasant surprise is in the true-crime elements in which this book is so deeply steeped. Kahn’s inves-tigators and their case studies will call to mystery mavens and armchair detec-tives alike, perhaps aiming crime solvers toward fascinating second careers later in life.Even if you’re not career-swapping, this different kind of business book is pure fun to read. If you’re thinking of a new job, however, and need help launching, get “Becoming a Private In-vestigator” and magnify your options. n

You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the high-est bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. Brand Storytelling: 11 Tips for Small Business Owners

How much thought do you give to the story of your brand? Not your market-ing and advertising (though they are related) but the story of your origins, purpose, community, values, team and mission.

Brand storytelling is getting a lot of at-tention right now, and for good reason. People don’t want to be marketed to, or advertised at, we want to be engaged. One of the best ways to engage your target audience is to share the stories of you, your team and your business.

Storytelling helps people connect with you on an authentic level. It enables you to share your journey, vision and pur-pose for starting your business in the first place. Stories help us understand ourselves and the world. That may sound a bit too woo-woo for a column about marketing, but think about the last time you were emotionally moved by a com-mercial or marketing campaign—I’m willing to bet there was a story involved.

The best way to get started with brand storytelling is to simply start, and refine your strategy as you go. Whether you’re new to brand storytelling or have years of experience under your marketing belt, here are 11 prompts to refine and share your unique story.

1. Who are you? Start with the basics. Who are the people behind your com-pany? Don’t hide, people want to see who you are and what you do.

2. What did you do before you started your business? What’s your origin story? What piqued your interest in something

enough that you wanted to make it your profession?

3. Why did you start your business? Starting a business takes commitment, vision and intelligence. What drove you to start this particular business?

4. Who do you serve? It’s important to clearly define your target market. Who do you serve? How do you serve them? Do you provide entertainment, a profes-sional service, products, materials?

5. How do you help people? Related to number 4, helping people get what they want is the best way to get what you want in your business. How do you help people? What problem are your solv-ing? How do you make their lives eas-ier? How do you help them fulfill their hopes and goals? Weave this throughout your brand storytelling.

6. What are your brand values? What do you stand for as a company? Sharing your brand values is storytelling gold. You don’t have to be a nonprofit or B Corporation or social good company to do good in the world and have strong values associated with your brand. Whatever your values are, make them clear to your team and customers.

7. How do you make an impact and give back to your community? What are you doing to make the world a better place? Again, this is storytelling gold.

8. Who are your teammates? Maybe you’re a company of one. If that’s the case, who are your suppliers, collabo-rators and providers? Share the stories of how you work together. If you have a team running your business, share the stories of those people. Who are they, what are their roles, how do they fur-

ther the company’s mission? Give us a glimpse behind the curtain of your business.

9. What are your teammates passionate about? Taking number 8 a step further, share the deeper stories of your team. What do they care about? Why do they do the work they do? If you can capture the humans behind the jobs, you can do some brilliant, humanizing storytelling.

10. What’s the big picture vision for your company? If everything went really well in your company, what would you most like to see? What are you working toward? Let your target audience in on what powers your own passion.

11. What makes your company unique? In marketing, we talk about differenti-ators, or differentiating factors. These are the things that set you apart from your competition. Storytelling is a pow-erful way to do this. How are you dif-ferent? Why should people care about you, specifically? What do you do better than everyone else? Don’t be shy here. Sharing your differentiators with the world is one of the best ways to attract attention and, even better, attract peo-ple from your target audience.

Now that you have some prompts for basic brand storytelling, choose a few, f lesh out the details, and start think-ing about how you can incorporate your responses into stories of your brand. In next month’s column I’ll share tips for getting those stories out into the world, including pointers on brand tone, voice and angle. “Starting a successful business is not tricky. Starting a successful business does not require above average intelligence. Starting a successful business does require having a pig-head-ed, purpose-driven tenacity about achieving your life goals and fulfilling your life’s vision through providing products and services that offer uncompromising quality in a scalable and duplicatable way.”
