Algebra 3 This math camp is probably very different from most math classes you have taken before. I believe, and math education research supports the idea, that the best way to learn mathematics is by solving problems in which at first glance, the solution path is not obvious. It helps students develop what is called “adaptive expertise.” Students with adaptive expertise can go beyond the routine competencies, and can be characterized by their flexible, innovative, and creative competencies. A must for any student considering a STEM major.

The purpose of this math camp is to help students become better problem-solvers, develop their adaptive expertise, and learn advanced algebra topics not taught in most high school algebra curriculum. Topics to be learned in the math camp include multivariable polynomials, Vieta’s Formulas, Newton Sums, arithmetico-geometric series, and Symmetric Sums. Learning these topics and the problem-solving experience is excellent preparation for doing well on the ACT, SAT, SAT Math Level 2 exam, and the American Mathematics Competition.

Required materials: We will be using the book “Art of Problem Solving: Intermediate Algebra” by Richard Rusczyk. The book and solution manual can be purchased for $69 at the following AoPS website: https://artofproblemsolving.com/store/item/intermediate-algebra

Algebra Concepts and Problem SolvingAlgebra is arguably the most important math topic for students to learn. It is foundational for most math classes that come afterwards, as well as many other STEM classes. Students will learn concepts and problem-solving strategies by engaging in fun, collaborative problem-solving activities. Problems and lessons will be taken from Art of Problem Solving textbooks, as well as curriculum developed at the Center for Research in Math and Science Education that are based on research of how students learn algebra. To help foster a collaborative environment in which every student feels they are an integral part of the math camp, enrollment will be limited to the first 24 students who register. Top high school math problem-solvers from the SFC Math Team will be assisting Mr. Maxon, so that each participant gets individualized feedback every day. This class is ideal for students taking Algebra 1 next year, or who have completed Algebra 1 recently and want to get even better at it before enrolling in Algebra 2.
