PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

For nearly four decades, Santa Fe College has been the community’s leader in fostering innovative partnerships with business and industry for the purpose of meeting local workforce needs.

Partnerships are a cornerstone of our success. Through a time-honored collaboration with area companies, Santa Fe has prepared generations of highly skilled professionals for a wide range of careers. We know the importance of aligning education with changing demands in the economy, and doing so in real time. Santa Fe’s local Advisory Committees keep us abreast of the latest advances in industry. Industry representatives bring focus and clarity to our efforts. The skill and motivation of our faculty and staff get it done. All this because the presence of a superior workforce is a critical consideration in companies’ decisions to locate, expand and remain in our region.

Colleges like Santa Fe are increasingly being called upon to preserve our nation’s economic prosperity. We educate a large part of the workforce of the 21st century, one that must be knowledgeable, flexible and adaptable if our nation is to remain at the fore. We are a nation of communities, and each college serves the nation by serving its community. We serve well because of the dedication, skill and commitment of our partners public and private. Together we share the work and celebrate the success it brings.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

Graduates of Santa Fe College’s Building Construction Technology program are helping build the Gator Nation in Gainesville and beyond. Locally, construction graduates and apprentices are laying the physical foundation to the Gator Nation, working on projects such as the Warrington College of Business expansion on UF’s campus.

An A.S. degree in Building Construction Technology gives graduates the technical skills required in the industry, blended with management training. Graduates are comfortable both in the office environment and on the job site.

According to graduate survey data from 2013, 82 percent of graduates entered the workforce upon graduation in construction related fields, many of them staying close to home, working on projects like the new Springhill Expansion on 39th Avenue, directly across from SF’s Northwest Campus.

PROGRAMMING AND ANALYSIS

Blake McLeod is a 2012 graduate of Santa Fe College’s Internet Services Technology (IST) program. With his A.S. degree in IST, McLeod was able to find a job immediately after graduation without leaving the area, while continuing his education online at the University of South Florida where he will graduate in December with his B.A.S. in Web Design and Development.

“I did an internship with 352 during my time at SF and got hired that summer,” McLeod said. “I found a job I love and I was able to get right to work, earning income while continuing my education.”

Getting to work quickly is one of the primary benefits of the CTE education students receive at Santa Fe College. McLeod is currently employed as a frontend developer at 352 in Gainesville. 352 is a Santa Fe College community partner.

R.N. TO B.S.N. PROGRAM

Bridgette Moss has the distinction of being a part of the class of 2014 — the first Santa Fe College class to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in nursing through the R.N. to B.S.N program. This program allows nurses who have completed the A.S.N. program and are currently working in the nursing profession to obtain a bachelor’s degree.

“The convenience of this program is invaluable,” Moss said. “To be able to continue to work while earning my degree made it possible for me to go back to school.”

Moss continues to work as a nurse at UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital where she was employed during her participation in the R.N. to B.S.N. program. UF Health Shands Rehab Hospital is a Santa Fe College community partner.

ctive partnerships enrich the experience of students in Santa Fe College’s Construction and Technical Programs, according to Program Director Jane Parkin. Recent examples are a model

program with Daikin Industries, Ltd., an award-winning collaboration with Habitat for Humanity and student participation in an international solar home building competition.

Daikin Industries and the Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heating Service Technology ProgramSanta Fe College’s Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Heating Service Technology program received a donation of about $50,000 worth of equipment from Daikin, the world’s leading producer of air conditioning and heating equipment. “This is huge,” said Instructor Art Grant. “About 40 percent of the air conditioners and heaters in the world are manufactured by Daikin. We were also fortunate to have All Florida Electrical donate needed electrical equipment. Students in our electrical program installed that equipment and students in our air conditioning program installed the Daikin units.” The equipment was installed in the technical training building on SF’s Northwest Campus and will be used for training in HVAC program classes, enabling SF students to graduate as approved Daikin technicians. “This is an incredible opportunity,” said Parkin. “Training our students on this high-tech equipment gives them the cutting-edge advantage over other students.” The Santa Fe College/Daikin partnership is the first of its kind in the United States and will serve as the model for similar Daikin programs throughout the country.

Habitat for Humanity and the Building Construction Management Technology Program Students in the Santa Fe College Building Construction Management Technology classes worked with collaborators and volunteers to construct four new Habitat for Humanity homes indoors at the Charles R. Perry Construction Institute on SF’s Northwest Campus. Partners on the project include Alachua Habitat for Humanity, the Builders Association of North Central Florida (BANCF) that sponsors the college’s apprenticeship programs, and volunteers from SF’s Student Builders Association, SF Student Government and Habitat for Humanity. The homes are built indoors in two sections. Each section is then lifted by a crane onto a trailer and transported to the permanent home site, then lifted again onto the foundation. Flooring, a front and back porch, driveway and landscaping are completed at the home site. U.S. Department of Energy Solar DecathlonStudents from Santa Fe College will partner with students from the University of Florida and the National University of Singapore on an international team that will compete against 19 other teams in the 2015 Solar Decathlon. The Decathlon challenges students to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. The teams will design, construct, and test their houses before reassembling them in October 2015 at the competition site in Irvine, California. “The Solar Decathlon can be a positive, life-changing experience for participating students,” said Solar Decathlon Director Richard King. “In addition to developing leadership, team spirit, and problem-solving skills, this competition bridges formal education with hands-on experience that helps decathletes excel once they enter the workforce.”

Clinical Laboratory ScienceInterim Director: Eileen Monck PA-102, 352-395-5321Advisor: Mary El-Semarani PA-102, 352-381-3755 The Clinical Laboratory Science program prepares students to work as a medical technologist in a clinical setting such as a hospital, medical center or reference laboratory. Upon graduation, students are eligible for certification as a medical technologist by the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). The CLS program is accredited by SACSCOC and is currently seeking clinical accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).

Early Childhood EducationDirector: Dr. Tyran Butler B-214, 352-395-5350Advisor: Leslie Mojeiko B-217, 352-395-5322

The Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education includes classes covering preschool curriculum, social and emotional development, classroom management, and developmentally appropriate practices. For practical experience, students utilize SF’s Little School, an on-campus preschool program for children ages 14 months to 5 years, including two prekindergarten classes. Bachelor’s degree programs like SF’s help elevate the status of early childhood education by raising the pay scale of preschool teachers and retaining more students hoping to earn higher degrees. In the past, teachers wanting to earn bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education often had to switch focuses because more advanced degrees simply were not offered in the field.

The Bachelor of Applied Science program in Health Services Administration is an online program that prepares students to enter the workforce as medical/health services managers. In this profession, graduates are responsible for planning, directing, coordinating and supervising the delivery of health care. They may be specialists managing specific clinical departments or generalists managing a facility or system. Their work as managers involves a complex array of factors impacting today’s health care environment: technology, regulations, accreditation, innovation in treatment and delivery, system finance and insurance reimbursement. Courses in the Health Services Administration degree are taught almost entirely online with the exception of a final capstone internship class that is taught in the field.

6A bachelor’s degree is the highest degree you can achieve in undergraduate education. For most, a bachelor’s degree at SF is the next step after obtaining an A.A. or an A.S. degree. It allows students to continue to build skills and advance in a career field.

Industrial BiotechnologyInterim Director: Eileen Monck PA-102, 352-395-5321Advisor: Mary El-Semarani PA-102, 352-381-3755

Industrial biotechnology uses living cells, such as bacteria and yeast, or enzymes to make bio-based products in industrial sectors such as chemicals, food, detergents, textiles and bioenergy (biofuels or biogas). The Industrial Biotechnology program prepares students for a career in biomanufacturing, quality control, or research and development. In this program, students get extensive, hands-on training in various aspects of genetic modification and assay development, as well as training in the financial, regulatory and organizational skills needed to work in this industrial biotechnology field.

Nursing (R.N. to B.S.N.)Associate Director: Dr. Loree Crain W-266, 352-395-5740Facilitator: Dr. Teresa Goodman W-263, 352-395-5745Advisor: Scott Fortner W-002, 352-395-5650

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Completion Program is a limited access program designed for registered nurses who are graduates of an accredited associate of science in nursing degree program (A.S.N.). Registered nurses provide and coordinate patient care, educate patients and the public about various health conditions, and provide advice and emotional support to patients and their family members. Employment of registered nurses is expected to grow 26 percent from 2010 to 2020, faster than the average for all occupations. With this growth, many hospitals and clinics will expand requirements for nurses with bachelor’s degrees.

Organizational ManagementDirector: Dr. James Geason C-107, 352-395-5135Coordinator: Dr. Jake Searcy A-051, 352-381-7088Advisor: Doug Robertson C-102, 352-395-5139

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Organizational Management program is the only one of its kind in Alachua or Bradford counties. The Organizational Management program prepares students for management and supervisory positions in a variety of professions. The program provides a career and educational pathway for students who have earned an Associate of Science degree in a professional and technical discipline. The Organizational Management program also provides an excellent opportunity for individuals who have already entered the workforce but are interested in acquiring business management, leadership and supervisory skills. The program builds directly on SF’s A.S. and A.A. degrees in business administration, and indirectly on technical degrees in other areas. Students are exposed to the theory and practice of business management including finance, economics, law, human resource management and organizational behavior. The degree culminates with a capstone course where students put into practice the theories and principles they have studied in the program.
