Last Week in Review - Potenza - Making a Difference

Winifred Potenza spoke on Making a Difference. She characterized Rotarians as a group dedicated to making a difference. She demonstrated how a single person committed to making something happen - CAN! In addi-tion to describing her Hearts of The World project Po-tenza talked about Constitution Park and the “We The People” Project. The building will incorporate construction materi-als from the steel and debris of the World Trade Center. Potenza is sending “This American Heart” T-shirts to each Congressman and Representative. In addition to her planned talk, the presence of the Seegmillers and their presentation prompted her to recount the loss of her own son to a drunk driver. John Dolinsek Remembers REMEMBER….. When the worst thing you could do at school was smoke in the bathrooms, flunk a test or chew gum. When a ‘57 Chevy was everyone’s dream car… to cruise, peel out, lay rubber and watch drag races, and people went steady and girls wore a class ring with an inch of wrapped dental floss or yarn coated with pastel frost nail polish so it would fit her finger. And no one asked where the car keys were ‘cause they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked. And playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game. Back then, baseball was not a psy-chological group learning experience—it was a game. Remember when stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals ‘cause no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger. When being sent to the principal’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a mis-behaving student at home?

The Golf Tournament Friday May 31, 2002

Fountaingrove Golf & Country Club It’s all over for another year and it was a success. It was full (144 golf-ers) and the weather was fantastic. A tremendous amount of hard work went into making this a success and the club thanks the golf committee for an event that added about $20,000 to our Community op-portunity fund. A good dinner at the Hilton. More on this later from Tux Tuxhorn

was riding from Florida, broke down 45 miles out of Mesa, so he just got his bike off the bus and road into town to meet his Dad.

Jon Stark had a great time at the Jazz Festival in Sacramento.

Mike Downey was rec-ognized for the new Summit Bank building on Bicentenniel.

Larry Martin paid for the recovery of his car keys.

More Recognition

President Steve Olsen presiding. Among our visiting Rotarians and guests were Kent and Joan Seegmiller, who thanked the Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary Club for continuing the memorial recognition of Joan’s son Michael Scott De-Shields via the continua-tion and en-hancement of our scholar-ship program. The scholarships are in char-acter with Michael’s vibrant, active, hard-working attitude towards life (see the bulle-tin from two weeks ago for this year’s win-ners). The scholarship was founded in 1986, the first year of our Rotary club after Michael’s untimely death.

Brian Rondon’s Father passed away and Steve Olsen’s Father-in-law passed away during this past week. Our condolences to the families.

There were several last minute Golf an-nouncements, but those don’t mean any-thing now.

RECOGNITION

Dale Zumfelde said he ap-preciates the club holding a birthday celebration for him at the Hilton Hotel just after our golf tournament.

Denise Gilseth was born on Mothers’ Day and her

Mother is continually reminded of the event via its date and the BBQ. She caught a 17-pound salmon!! making several other ro-tarians envious.

Nancy Aita offered up $5 for her great weekend bed and breakfast experience in Yountville, which she purchased at the Wine and Wheels auction (along with a LOT of other stuff).

Steve Davis acquired a brand new Audi A6 to keep his boxter company.

Russ Lockner was all over the map (isn’t he always) and he was traveling too: Colo-rado, Salt Lake City, Michigan (ever been to Detroit?), St. Louis, Phoenix and, you guessed it - Montana.

Jerry Dodrill - Photography “My experiences, both at home and abroad, have provided an expansive array of opportunities to photograph the world. A deep desire for travel and climbing has led to exotic destinations around the globe in search of remote alpine peaks and foreign cultures. Photography perfectly accommodates my need to create art while evocatively sharing my journeys to the edge of reality.

Through my ‘experience-based’ images I hope to communicate my respect and connection to the natural world. I seek graphic, elemental compositions, which portray the simplistic order, balance, and rhythm of life. My goal is to inspire others to be personally interactive with their environment and experience the invigoration and freedom of the wilderness.”

Jerry Dodrill has been documenting his adventures with a camera since the early 1980's. When he began rock climbing near his home in Central Texas in the late '80's, the camera became a standard piece of his equipment. A trip to Yosemite in 1990 opened his eyes and changed his life forever. Within a year his family had moved to the Golden State and a life-long commitment to adventure was formed.

A well-rounded base of experience in all disciplines of climbing have attributed to his photographic success on the biggest walls in Yosemite and many tall peaks around the world. His excursions have led to Argentina, Bolivia, China, France, Greece, Italy, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, Micronesia, Switzerland, and throughout North America.

Jerry studied photography and fine art at Pacific Union College (1993-1997) and received several rewards for outstanding achievement. His well-respected work has been exhibited in many prominent venues including the Ansel Adams Gallery in Yosemite Valley. His images and writing have appeared in The North Face catalog, Outside, Elevation, Rock & Ice, Fitness Runner, Vanity Fair, and others. He lives in Sebastopol, CA and teaches photography at Pacific Union College while continuing his stock, assignment, and fine art photography business.

SANTA ROSA SUNRISE ROTARY CLUB BULLETIN

Last Week in Review: Honorable Arnold D. Rosenfield Judge Rosenfield did a great job describing the concept and practice of Restorative Justice. In the conventional system, once the cases get to court, the attention is all on the perpetrators and once they are in Juvenile Hall, they sit on their butts and learn about crime. Restorative Justice is not a program - it’s an idea. It brings balance to the way

we look at juvenile crime: 1 What is the harm caused to the commu-nity, 2 Who caused it, 3 How can the offender make it right with the victim/s. Judge Rosenfield provided some examples of the concept in practice. The process includes a family group conference which in-cludes the victim, extended family, the perpetrator and family, police, probation officers, … can be over 30 people. Understanding the impact of the crime enhances the probability the person will not commit an-other crime. Several members have commented that it is unnecessary to repeat the details of a presentation they have seen. There is much more on Restorative Justice on the internet. It’s a great idea.

More Recognition

President Steve Olsen presiding. Past President and current Assistant District Governor, Randy Seelye, presented the award that was presented to our club at the District Conference—we were first in Mem-bership Development for LARGE clubs. Our district was first in membership growth in Zone 23. There are 530 districts in the world. That award will be presented in Bar-celona.

Jon Stark made a last minute plea for can-didates for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award week at Westminster Woods, June 16-21. It is a leadership development camp for students completing their Junior year.

Linda Hauck has volunteered to create the bulletin for the first 6 months of the new Ro-tary year, beginning July 1. THANK YOU, Linda.

Dan Lambert’s father passed away. Our heart-felt condolences to you, Dan.

RECOGNITION

Mike Kelly missed the meeting, probably to avoid hearing the club sing, as it was his birthday.

Penny Millar’s birthday is on Friday. On Saturday she is having a family reunion. Her oldest son, James, will graduate from high school and received 3 awards at the Piner High awards night.

Dave Lorenzen will celebrate his birthday doing yard work. Scott Holder will cele-brate Tricia’s birthday by taking her out with 23 of his closest Edward Jones asso-ciates.

It was reported (by Russ Lockner) that Jim McCracken had been fly fishing at a pri-vate lake near Redding. He caught a 22” rainbow.

Just before he had a chance to stand up on his own to con-fess, Steve Herron was exposed as a winner of a wealth of prizes at the golf ban-quet, AND his 4some came in second, with the help of a ringer.

Steve Worthen was another winner—the

COMBINED DRIVING

AKA HORSE DRIVING TRIALS Steve has been competing in Combined Driving

Events since 1991. After successfully competing in the “singles” division for several years he has now moved to the preliminary “pairs” division. The brains of that enterprise are, of course, the two registered Morgan geldings, Annadel Chalmer’s Choice and Calyn Keomah Chief, that are the pride and joy of the barn. Steve is the immediate past president of the Carriage Association of America and currently the United States representative to the International Driving Presidents’ Council. The presentation will attempt to explain all of the foregoing.

The Santa Rosa Sunrise Weekly Bulletin Several comments, complaints, suggestions have been passed on to Linda Hauck (past and next bulletin editor) and I to make the bulletin better. They include: (1) decrease the file size to make it easier to download, by decreas-ing resolution of photos and eliminating the last 2 pages of the bulletin, (2) Eliminate the discussion of last week’s speaker as it just repeats what eve-ryone already heard, and (3) Eliminate the sponsor requirement as mailing costs have been decreased. Pass further comments on to Jim Moir.

President Steve Olsen presiding. Steve was so happy to get his Mont Blanc pen back, he contributed $100 to his nephew’s Paul Harris Fellowship.

Mike Kelly thought about us singing happy birthday to him last week and it made him so sick, he missed the meeting and the golf tournament. It was not a happy birthday, but he plans on Trinity in July.

Archie and Sue Julian spend their 31st wedding anniversary camping at the bot-tom of King’s Canyon, down by the river, doing what he likes to do ……?

Ralph Harryman celebrated his 37th wed-ding anniversary by attending golf school while Kathy went to work …..! That was worth $100 to Kathy’s Paul Harris.

Speaking of Ralph — he and the rest of his ringer 4some, won the golf tournament with a 14 under par. Ralph says it was “just an accident” but they do get together and talk about it. Ralph was also “overlooked” when President Steve announced that Randy Seelye was the only male at a table full of the female power of rotary, and fined all male tables $1 per member.

Shauna Lorenzen was rec-ognized for completing the first of 3 tests to earn her 2nd degree black belt in karate. She leaped small girls with a single bound and broke 1”x12” #2 pine boards, only slightly injuring her board holder. One unworthy note is

that her instructor is Dan Sabatino, who quit the club when we invited women to be-come members.

Randy Seelye’s daughter, Elly, graduated from High School and will attend University of Oregon next fall. Big party.

Meeting Notes & Recognition

The meeting was opened by some guy wearing a skirt and cracking a whip. Turned out to be President Steve Olsen in his Driving Apron, required for the formal class, along with coat, gloves and hat, when competing in the Combined Driving Trials.

Although his guest, Jim Henderson, was here, Mike Kelly was not here to present the inspirational thought. In his place, Vicki Lockner gave her Rub-a-dub-dub-thanks-for-the-grub speech. Kelly finally showed up and puzzled people with “The top of the mountain is warmer than those in the valley imagine”, by Niezsche. He also had gone on some hike. And his bright yellow shirt helped crank his recognition up further.

Ken Coker auctioned off two $110-tickets to NASCAR, donating the proceeds to Jim McCracken’s grand-daughter’s Paul Har-ris. Stan Walker quickly bid $110.

When Jim Herron was recognized for wife, Laura’s birthday, he also admitted to some notoriety in this past weekend’s paper and donated $100 to his Paul Harris Fellowship

Randy Seelye’s birthday was today and the singing (??) began. He was leaving later in the day for Barcelona for the Inter-national Rotary Convention.

Jim Brenton celebrated his wife, Cindy’s birthday, playing horseshoes …..

Steve Davis is on his way to Paris right after his birthday. He will help celebrate the wedding of his sig-nificant friend’s son.

Bruce and Diantha O’Krepkie celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary on Fathers’ Day. He shot a 51 for 18 holes (at

Scandia).

Wendy is in Chico and Stanislaus orienting new nursing students and Warren is play-ing hockey on their 27th anniversary (6/20). But they’ll go to La Gare for dinner Friday.

Dan & Susan Davis celebrated their 29th anniversary, buying a new Suburban. Dan felt great about the results of his lengthy and tough negotiating of the price, until he saw it advertised for $1000 less in the pa-per the next day.

Linda Hauck was heavily assessed for just returning from Italy and France (Tuscany, Provence and Paris).

Rotarians celebrate achievements, ponder future at convention

More than 19,000 Rotarians trav-eled from 147 countries to attend the 93rd RI Convention in sunny Barcelona, Spain, on 23-26 June. The event opened with remarks from RI President Rich-ard D. King, who focused on the increased need for organizations such as Rotary in the face of wars and tragedies.

"The world looks to us for direction," he said. "And why not? We are the most dedicated, en-ergetic, and committed citizen-leaders that the world has ever known." President King then presented a Rotary Award of Honor to U.S. hu-morist and humanitarian Jerry Lewis.

A highlight of the convention was the announce-ment on 24 June of the winners of the Global Quest by the RI president and Kenneth Boyd, chairman of the RI Membership Development Executive Steering Committee. Thirty winners received jeweled globes for their achievements, and President King announced that an unprece-dented number of more than 72,500 new Ro-tarians were inducted during 2001-02.

On 25 June, former Soviet Union President and honorary Rotarian Mikhail Gorbachev made a keynote address on the importance of service organizations in promoting world peace, health, and environmental protection. "I would like to congratulate your movement on its great ac-complishments and salute all those who are doing projects that respond to the hopes of the people in the 21st century," he said. President King presented Gorbachev with RI's Humanitar-ian Service Award, in recognition of his ground-breaking efforts to promote peace and social development.
