Transforming insurance services with responsive IT

Santalucia Seguros, part of The Santalucia Group, has served Spanish families and businesses for close to 100 years. It offers a diverse portfolio to 7 million customers through a national network of more than 400 agencies and sales offices.

To stay competitive in the fast-paced, digital-focused financial services industry, Santalucia sought to enhance its business model with easy-to-use online tools and a comprehensive view of custom-ers. Additionally, the insurance provider wanted to partner with banks and third parties to sell its insurance to new markets. These changes, coupled with personalized, innovative new products and services, would not only expand its potential customer base but also help improve existing customer loyalty and satisfaction.

However, this business transformation required updates to Santalucia’s IT environment. “We have very traditional products supported by legacy IT,” said Javier Sanchis, Chief Architect, I.T. Department, at Santalucia Seguros. “Our IT wasn’t responsive enough. It was complex to manage and maintain. We wanted to be more agile to transform everything: our IT, our business model, and our company.”

Santalucia Seguros sought to quickly create a new, application programing interface (API)-centric IT architecture that would integrate different internal and third-party applications and support faster development and deployment through improved resource access.

“We know we have to adapt, and that we have to be quick to make these changes,” said Sanchis. “We wanted to provide a successful model that can be adopted by all of the companies in the Santalucia Group.”

Adopting open source integration and platform technology

After historically working with only one vendor, Santalucia Seguros sought a vendor-agnostic, enter-prise open source solution to establish more dynamic, efficient IT that would support working with additional, specialized vendors when needed.

Red Hat offered flexible enterprise technology that would help the insurance provider improve inter-nal and integrated performance at the pace of business. “It was clear that open source solutions would be faster to implement,” said Sanchis. “We looked at other providers and at other architec-tures, but nothing could beat the speed of Red Hat. At both the sales and proof of concept stages, the agility and flexibility of Red Hat’s technology was exceptional.”

Working with Red Hat Consulting for design and testing, Santalucia Seguros deployed Red Hat Fuse to create a distributed integrated service architecture, connected to its legacy back-end technology. This architecture will connect new applications to the core administrative system and provide access to policy, billing, and claims data.

With this universal integration platform, developers and business users can independently develop connected solutions in the environment of their choosing. The platform lets users collaborate and business contributors self-serve while staying compliant with company and regulatory policies. Additionally, Red Hat 3scale API Management simplifies API management for components in on-premise, cloud, or hybrid deployments. To support this architecture, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform provides a flexible, Kubernetes-based environment to automate and more easily manage resources and operations.

“Red Hat Fuse is an excellent integration tool, but we could also see the progression to include OpenShift and 3scale API Management, then to the cloud. The combination was perfect for us: a solution for today, and a clear roadmap for the future,” said Sanchis.

Using efficient technology and approaches to stay competitive

Improved time to market

With a centralized integration solution that connects its various development and production envi-ronments, Santalucia Seguros can now create and launch new products and services faster.

“We’ve done in one year what would have taken at least twice as long with other vendors,” said Sanchis. “We’ve deployed three new software solutions from Red Hat, defined and adopted two new API models, and launched a new DevOps development landscape.”

Another example is a new home insurance application the service provider has created with OpenShift containers, integrated using Red Hat Fuse, that simplifies insurance product selection. This application is now in use by Santalucia Seguros’s internal teams, with plans to launch a customer-facing version at the end of 2019.

Enhanced innovation and competitiveness

Adopting Red Hat Fuse and Red Hat 3scale API Management has helped Santalucia Seguros simplify integration of its core systems with third-party applications. With this new approach, the company has redefined its business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) strategy. Connecting with these offerings creates a competitive advantage in a dynamic market by helping the insurance company sell its products and services to new markets through partner channels.

“Looking ahead, Red Hat Fuse gives us the ability to develop custom core applications and integrate them easily and efficiently,” said Sanchis.. “We can identify new business opportunities with other insurance providers or banks and respond to them quickly.”

Gained new in-house technology expertise

To gain the experience and knowledge needed to successfully operate and manage its new Red Hat software environment, Santalucia Seguros engaged Red Hat Training to work with its in-house devel-opment teams.

“Throughout working closely with Red Hat Services during and after implementation, we’ve been able to demonstrate that we know what we’re doing and have the right people and skills to succeed. We have capabilities and skills we didn’t have a year ago, focused on new methods like DevOps and Red Hat’s technologies,” said Sanchis. “That new knowledge and experience has helped accelerate our transformation.”

The insurance provider’s IT teams have also demonstrated successful collaboration with business teams to support organization-wide strategic efforts. “We didn’t have a cohesive IT culture or organi-zational model before this. Our success with these new solutions shows we can transform not just our IT approach but also our business model,” said Sanchis.

Building a path to continued business transformation

Santalucia Seguros’ success with an API- and Red Hat software-based architecture has encouraged other organizations within the Santalucia Group to adopt similar approaches to help IT contribute to business goals.

“Every company in the group is defining a strategic plan, aligned with the group’s global strategy. We hope to replicate the success of this new approach within Santalucia Seguros within other organiza-tions in the group. Our success has given the group’s board trust in what we’re doing,” said Sanchis.

In the future, Santalucia Seguros plans to add Red Hat OpenShift Container Storage to its OpenShift environment to gain the persistent storage and data portability needed to manage hybrid cloud and multicloud deployments.

The insurance provider is now preparing to migration the legacy platforms for each business line to the new, more agile environment. Streamlining these migrations to a single, consistent container platform and approach will help speed the project. The company is prepared for this work to take up to 10 years, due to widespread complexity and the isolated nature of the insurance business.

“We’re also focused on ways to make our teams more productive as we continue to save time on IT management,” said Sanchis. “We plan to continue focusing on Ansible Automation and may look at deploying an OpenShift cluster in the cloud at some point. We know that, beyond having the right tools to help us in the coming years, Red Hat will continue to be a strategic partner.”
