El área norte de Santiago anali-zada asume los barrios de San Lázaro, Fontiñas y Amio; una zona de acceso a la ciudad, con un gran crecimiento en los años 90 y siendo actualmente un punto de mira de crecimiento urbano. Un área que absorbe pequeños pue-blos rurales y combina distintas escalas edificatorias. Al mismo tiempo, el Cami-no de Santiago tiene su entrada prin-cipal a la ciudad a través de las vías principales del área estudiada, dotán-dola de una gran importancia cultural, convirtiéndose en la actualidad en una zona de convergencia entre la vida moderna y las costumbres tradionales.

The studied area of northern Santiago includes the neighborhoods of San Lázaro, Fontiñas, and Amio. This area went through a period of great expansion during the 90s and has now become both a main entrance to Santiago and a point of urban grow-th. This area absorbs small rural towns and combines different building scales. At the same time, the Camino de San-tiago enters the city through the main roads of the area, and grants it withs great cultural importance, becoming now a place of convergence between modern life and traditional habits.

Barrio de SalgueiriñoS

El barrio fue contuído en los años 50, creciendo un importante nú-cleo residencial alrededor del Mercado de Ganado. Un barrio que colin-da también con el importante polígono residencial de Vite hacia el oeste, en el que se encuentra el acceso a la carretera nacional que va hacia Co-ruña, cruzando esta zona. En este barrio se sitúa la Agencia Tributaria.

This neighbourhood was built in the 50s, after the growth of an important residential area around the “Mercado de Ganado”. It borders on Vite to the west, and the road leading to Coruña goes through it. The “Agencia Tributaria” is located here.

BarrioS de San Caetano Un barrio por el que se accede al centro de Santiago, que limita por el sur con el camino de los peregrinos,. Está onfigurado por una serie de edificios gubernamentales que dan al barrio su principal carac-terística; administrativa. Por otro lado, se localiza la esta-ción de autobuses, situada a extramuros para solventar el problema de circulaciones en el interior.

This neighbourhood borders on the pilgrims’ way to the south, and you pass through it to enter the city centre. It is formed by a series of governmental buildings, which provide the neighbourhood with its main feature; the administrative one. On the other hand, the bus station is also located here, outside the city, to solve the traffic problem in the inner city.

Barrio de aS CanCelaS Se trata de una zona replanteada recientemente para crear un gran centro comercial llamado “As Cancelas”, 4 torres residenciales (que serán las más altas de toda la ciudad). Actual-mente cuenta con un camping.El centro comercial prevé 2.500 puestos de trabajo directo y 8.000.000 de visitantes al año. El barrio se delimita por el sur por la salida de la autopista en Santiago Norte

This is a recently replanned area to built a new huge shop-ping mall, called As Cancelas, 4 residential towers (which will be the highest ones in the city). Nowadays there is also a campsite.The shopping mall foresees 2.500 new direct jobs and 8.000.000 visitors per year.The neighbourhood borders on the exit of the motorway in North Santiago

Barrio de FontiñaS

Este barrio se comenzó a desarrollar en 1988., con un 90% de viviendas de protección oficial. Fue resultado de la búsqueda de un enfriamiento del precio de la vivienda en el casco antiguo, consiguiendo bajar el mismo sobre un 25%. En la actualidad absorbe una población de alrededor de 16.000 personas. Una zona casi sin bajos comerciales, con un gran centro comercial que combina el ocio con el uso resi-dencial y que comparte el trayecto del camino francés con el barrio de San Caetano, además de contar con dos institutos, parques y escuela infantil.

This neighbourhood started to be developed in 1988, and it is formed by a 90% of subsidized housing. It was built to decrease prices of dwellings in the old part of the city by 25%. Nowadays it concentrates a population of about 16.000 inhabitants. It is an area without almost any commercial premi-ses, but there is a shopping mall that combines both leisure and dwellings and shares the route of the French way with San Cae-tano’s neighbourhood. It also features two secondary schools, parks and a kindergarden.

Barrio de San lázaro La aldea San Lázaro se mantiene en un entorno rural, en el cual han sido incorporados edificios de carácter admi-nistrativo como el SERGAS, el palacio de Congresos, IGAPE, IGE, Museo Pedagógico de Galicia, Consellería de Media Ambiente, Edificios de los Sindicatos y el Pabellón de Galicia de la Expo de Sevilla, además del estadio multiusos de San Lázaro.Una zona residencial en expansión.

The village of San Lázaro stays in a rural environment, in which some ad-ministrative buildings, such as SERGAS, the Exhibition and Conference Centre, IGAPE, IGE, the Pedagogical Museum of Galicia, the Environment Department, the trade union Building and the Galician Pavilion for the Expo 92, as well as the multipurpose stadium of San Lázaro, have been incorporated. It is a potential residential area.

Barrio de amio

Se trata del barrio que ha tenido menos planeamiento urbano, continuando su carácter rural. Ha crecido únicamente a través de las vías con viviendas unifamilia-res tradicionales, contrastando con el cre-cimiento del resto de Santiago. Destaca el edificio de la Feria del Ganado, trasladada desde Salgueiriños.

Por este mismo lugar se realiza la entrada al polígono indus-trial del Tambre.

It is the neighbourhood that has undergone less urban plan-ning, keeping its rural nature. It has only been expanded along the roads with traditional single family homes, unlike the rest of Santiago. Its most particular building is the one that holds the cattle market, which was moved from Salgueiriños. This is also the area from which you enter the Industrial Park of the Tambre.

eSCalaS ediFiCatoriaS -Escala rural: Existen núcleos residenciales que provienen de viejas aldeas, como: Amio, San Lázaro, o Salgueiriño; esta última hasta hace pocos años contaba con un mercado de ganado que ha sido trasladado a Amio. -Escala urbana: Distintos planeamientos dieron crecimientos como el barrio de Vites Salguei-riños y Fontiñas; buscando con el último el aba-ratamiento de la vivienda en el casco viejo de la ciudad.

-Escala industrial: La zona norte cuenta con el polígono industrial de la ciudad, combinan-do tres escalas de edificiación y una gran diversi-dad de tipologías de vida.

-Rural-Scale: There are residential areas that come from old villages such as: Amio, San Laza-ro, or Salgueiriño. This last one recently had a cattle market that has been transferred to Amio.

-Urban-Scale: Different plannings gave as a result different neighbourhoods like Salgueiriños, Vite, and Fontiñas. The aim of this growth was to

lower down the price of the dwelings in the old town. -Industrial-Scale: Most part of the indus-try is converges at the noth and combines three edificiación scales as well as a wide variety of types of life.

El área analizada consta de: -Los importantes núcleos residenciales de Salgueiriños (años 70), Vite colindante (años 50) y Fontiñas (años 90). -Edificios administrativos de San Caetano (Xunta de Galicia), el SERGAS, IGE y la oficina de turismo(San Lázaro), Juzgados, EGAP y la Policía Autonómica (Fontiñas). -Grandes espacios de ocio Área Central (Fontiñas), el centro comercial As Cancelas (Can-celas), el Estadio de San Lázaro y el Palacio de Congresos (San Lázaro). -El polígono industrial de Santiago de Compostela, conocido como polígono de Tambre.

The studied area counts with: -Significant residential units from the 70s in Salgueiriños, the neighbourhoud of Vite from the 50s and Fontiñas from the 90s. -Administrative buildings as the Government of Galicia in in San Caetano, the tourists office, the SERGAS and the IGE in San Lázaro, and the regio-nal police, the courts and the EGAP in Fontiñas. -The industrial area of Santiago known as Polígono de Tambre.

El conjunto de barrios analizados, se comportan respondiendo como la entrada nor-te de Santiago: tanto como crecimiento urbano (a raíz de las vías), como de barrios de paso: tanto por los peregrinos como por los vehículos (a tra-vés de ka carretera nacional Santiago- Coruña y la Autopista de Peaje que circunvala la ciudad.).

These group of neighbourhoods beha-ve as northen entrance of santiago. Along the-se roads the neighbourhood grows and allows both the pilgrims and vehicles to enter in San-tiago through the road of Santiago- Coru-ña, or the sourrounding motorway of the city.
