“Fly Fishing Photography 101: How to Capture What

You See”

Over the past two decades Carol Ann Morris's photographs have not only appeared in most of her husband Skip Morris's 18 fly-fishing and -tying books but

on the covers and interior pages of such magazines as Grey's Sporting Journal and Fly Fishing & Tying Journal. Carol also speaks at fly clubs and fly-fishing shows.

She has performed her PowerPoint show "Fly-Fishing Photography 101: How to Capture What You See" all over the West-

-in Washington, Oregon, British Columbia--and in the East--Michigan, Ohio--at fly-fishing clubs and sportsmen's shows and fly-fishing expositions.

It seems fly fishers want to record their biggest and most beautiful fish, the fascinating rivers and lakes and beaches they fish and explored--the very heart of their beloved sport--with a camera. Carol

teaches them how to make their photos crisp and vivid, balanced and expressive. She demonstrates and explains the Rule of Thirds, effective use of light, the Magic Hour, UFOs (Unidentified Foreign Objects), how to photograph fish, and many other straightforward concepts anyone can use to improve their photographs. Also, Carol will show various failed photos and explain what caused the problems.

December Potluck Dinner (note earlier starting time!)

Remember our annual potluck dinner on Thurs-day, December 8, with doors open at 6:00 and dinner starting at 6:30. The club will provide ham, turkey, potatoes, gravy, and beverages. Bring a side dish to share plus your table set-ting.

Devil’s Lake Outing Report By Ken Karnosh

We had already cancelled the outing to Devils Lake on No-vember 5 due to weather and the weather didn’t look very favorable when we left home on November 12 to try again. Mother Nature was very coop-erative, though, as both the rain and wind died down when we got to the lake.

Only 5 of us made the trip, but had good fishing conditions and relatively cooperative fish. Both Bob and Larry landed about 5 fish, with some up to 18” as the photos show.

Green flies, fished fairly close to the surface, worked the best even though very few fish were rising. Keep this location in mind if you want to fish this winter.

Chef Howard made some delicious clam chowder with bread for lunch and Steve got to play with his new boat, so it was another good day to be on the water!

Detroit Lake By Ken Karnosh

Several of us have fished Detroit Lake this Fall. Although success rates among fishers have varied, people on each occasion have had good success with fish to 14” or more.

Reservoir levels are steadily lowering to winter levels, which one would think would concentrate the fish to some extent! Generally, lake levels start rising again at the end of January. One just has to look at weath-er forecasts, such as from the National Weather Service in Portland, to be sure that the wind won’t deter your fishing.

So, if you feel the need for some time on the water, keep Detroit in mind. Launch your floating device at Mongold ramp, after paying the daily use fee. Intermediate or other sinking lines probably work best and green flies have been productive.

Instead of presenting a fly of the month article, I wanted to forward some information about the Klinkhammer fly which was partly described or referenced in one of our past programs. Ques-tions from the audience indicated there was some confusion about what the pattern is and how it compares to some similar patterns. Wik-ipedia, an on-line encyclopedia describes the Kinkhammer as a "popular emerger used in fly fishing to catch grayling and trout."

Originally, the pattern was a light tan caddis imi-tation. The official name is the "Klinkhammer Special" and it was devised by the Dutch angler Hans van Klinken in the early 80's to imitate an emerging caddis fly to catch grayling and trout which feed on the caddis as it floats in the sur-face film.

The fly is designed to float in a specific way. The abdomen, acting as a trigger, penetrates the surface film and hangs below the thorax. The thorax is designed to hang down 'through' the surface of the water. The fly is held in place by the parachute hackle which rests on the sur-face.

In short, the parachute hackle keeps the fly from sinking, the thorax is in the surface film, and the abdomen is below the surface water.

This floating/emerging characteristic is accom-plished by using specific tying materials and a hook designed to hold the materials is the prop-er position. Unfortunately, some tyers simply look at a picture of the Klinkhammer Special and tie it with hooks they have on hand and use ma-terials they think will do the job. Over the years, some of the resulting Klinkhammers do not act like a true Klinkhammer should.

In terms of materials, high quality hackles with small diameter stems should be used along with a post that will help in the floating (antron, foam), thorax material that minimizes water sinking (ultra fine treated dubbing), abdomen material that will absorb water and aid in lower-ing the bottom of the hook under the water film, and most importantly, a Klinkhammer hook.

In the diagrams on the next page, an example of a Partridge 15BNX Klinkhammer Extreme hook is shown. Notice how its shape is different from the other emerger, scud, sedge, or shrimp hooks. The Klinkhammer has a straight eye, behind which is a short flat section, followed by a very sharp drop-off. The post, hackle, and thorax is tied on the flat section. the abdomen is tied on the section that drops off.

The Mustad Caddis hook and the TMC 205 pro-vide a flat section and a rapid drop off but the eyes are up eyes and not straight eyes. The flat section on the Mustad is too long. The Daiichi 1167 has a straight eye and a short flat section but the curved section for the abdomen is short-er and does not dip down into the water below the film as far as the Klinkhammer. The longer bent section on the Klinkhammer allows for a larger abdomen to act as the trigger to attract the fish to attack.

I hope this helps to straighten out what was re-ferred to when the speaker referred to a Klinkhammer pattern. From a tier's standpoint, the word Klinkhammer refers to a pattern tied on a special hook to present the fly in a specific way.

joined together to share their experiences and knowledge of the sport since 1975. The club was incorporated as an Oregon non-profit

organization in March of 1977. The Santiam Flycasters, Inc. is affiliated with the Federation of Fly Fishers.

The mission of the Santiam Flycasters is to promote the sport of fly-fishing for all interested individuals of every generation now and into

the future. Through fellowship, education, conservation practices, promoting research, guardianship of proper regulations and support

the Santiam Flycasters can succeed in this mission.
