Mike Schmierer, a veteran fly fisher and fly tyer, will present an overview of fly fishing. His presentation includes discussion of fly rod, line, leader to use for the type of fishing facing you. Mike is an expert knot tier and will share some specialty knots that are useful around camp and boat. He has developed a vice grip homemade vice and will share the "How to Make a Portable Vice.”
About Mike: “I grew up in Everett, Washington and lived in the Northwest my entire life. I caught my first fish when I was four years old on the South Fork of the Stillaguamish River. That fish was wrapped in a lily pad leaf and as my older brother carried it, it slipped out of the leaf and was lost. I have been chasing fish ever since. My early years involved fishing for rock cod, lingcod, trout and steelhead with bait.
I dabbled in fly fishing in my teenage years and was exposed to fly tying through my father. Fifty odd years later I have caught just shy of 160 species on my flies. The list includes all five Pacific salmon, steelhead, northern pike, Atlantic salmon, striped bass and sailfish. I am chasing my first carp and permit.
I have been a demonstration tier since 2012 and very much enjoy the creative aspect of fly tying. The last few years I have created several economical approaches to the art. It started with making durable, cheap eyes for streamers and has morphed into making fly vises and tying bobbins.”
Looks to be a great evening with something new to try for everyone!

Board Members Wanted
The Santiam Flycasters want you! We are looking for a few good men and women. If you are inter-ested in helping decide who our presenters are and where we go for our outings, please join us. Or, if you just want to find out what goes on during the board meet-ings or want to share your opinion; please join us. No experience needed, just your interest in fly fish-ing is all it takes to be a board member.

From the President By Ken Karnosh
I hope that each of us has thought several
times in our lives that “You know, I’m sure
glad that I met ___ or that I found ___ or
that I did ___.” I know that I have had sev-
eral of those thoughts.
One of those thoughts is that I’m sure glad
that I became involved with the Santiam
Flycasters. I had attended an occasional
meeting over the years until I joined the club about 15 years ago. I had
done some fly fishing, but certainly was not very knowledgeable about it.
I have enjoyed the meetings with presentations that whetted my fishing
appetite and have enjoyed helping with our various activities, but am really
glad that I started going to the club outings.
On the outings, I have learned a bunch of new and different places to fish,
have learned many things about fishing different waters, have learned
about favorite flies and how to tie a few, have acquired float tubes and a
pontoon boat, and have actually caught fish, sometimes quite a few fish,
on some of the waters, and had some interesting discussions around the
campfires with new and old friends. I just wish that I had become involved
earlier in life!
Thanks so much to those who shared their knowledge, time, and some
equipment as well at times.
Well, 2015 is rapidly coming to an end and that means that our December
holiday potluck dinner will be held next month on December 10. Mark
your calendars and plan to attend, hopefully with your significant other as
well, to enjoy this fun event.
With winter coming up, if you need some reading material, check out the
books in our club library. Matt has included a list on our website that you
can check out.
See you on the water.

Crooked River Outing Report
About seven of us fished the Crooked River on October 10. Although the weather (except for a Saturday evening shower) and the company were quite pleasant, the fish weren’t extremely cooperative.
We did manage to catch a few fish up to 14” and hooked a couple that felt much bigger. The water flow was 50-55 cfs, after being dropped from about 180 cfs the week be-fore. This flow is a bit below the normal winter flow, but there are plenty of holes to harbor the fish and this is still a very fun fish-ing destination.
Interestingly, I just saw that ODFW in 2014 estimated over 6,000 trout and 7,000 white-fish per mile in that section of the Crooked River!
Deschutes River Outing Report
A few of us made it to the Deschutes on October 24. The weather was pleasant, many fishermen were on the water, and the fish were cooperative at times.
On Friday, several boaters had caught multiple steel-head and/or trout and we caught fair numbers of trout near the campground. Those of us who floated on Saturday caught some fish, as did those who fished near camp. Tim caught a small Bull Trout. While floating, we saw a number of people fighting fish as we floated by, so there are good numbers there.
Unfortunately, when we woke on Sunday, some thief had stolen fly rods from at least two camps during the night. Jerrold lost two rods and his pack with all of his fly boxes. What a sad experience! We’ll be back, but will make our camps more secure.

Nestucca River Outing—November 21
On November 21, we will try to catch one of those wily Coho or Chinook Salmon on the Nestucca! Trout fishing closed on October 31. You will need a drift boat or pontoon boat to float the river or you may fish from the bank near Three Riv-ers.
We will float the section from Farmer’s Creek to Three Rivers. To get there, drive west on Highways 22 and 18 to Valley Junction and then Highway 22 to Hebo. The Three Rivers takeout is downstream and the Farmer’s Creek put-in is upstream (right) a couple of miles from Hebo.
You can stop at the Nestucca Valley Sporting Goods store in Hebo to get some food, fishing gear, or arrange a shuttle if needed. Plan to launch your craft at Farmer’s Creek by about 9:30.
Chinook are big, so rods should be 9 or 10 weights. Flies are your choice, but should be weighted to get down to the fish near the bottom.
Detroit Lake Outing — November 14 Cancelled
Unfortunately, the water level at Detroit Reservoir is well below any of the boat ramps, with deep mud below the ramps, so we are cancelling our trip to Detroit. Bummer! There should be large numbers of trout in the smaller reservoir!
Although it is not feasible to use the boat ramps, one probably could pack a float
tube a couple hundred yards to a suitable place along the bank to launch it. I
might just have to try that.
If you catch a nice fish, remember to
picture, and submit it for a chance to
win a Big Fish Hero award! Look for

Fishing with the Frog—Chasing Flies
By Howard Palmer
Once again, my loving wife had the audacity to question what I “really” did after coming home from another Salmon fishing trip with nothing to show for my time and efforts. I keep try-ing to explain to her that fishing for Salmon is not exactly akin to driving to the local Safeway store where they are all laid out and cleaned for you.
Friend Frank and I have spent the past few years in pursuit of said salmon and have in fact spent a goodly amount of cash in the process. I keep trying to tell him that we should be fly fishing for them because as a somewhat accomplished fly tier I could easily keep us in flies, and, we might even catch something. But, Frank is a gear guy, who thinks nothing at all of running down to one of the local fishing supply stores, and plopping his credit card down in order to have the next best thing on the market; only to find that whatever he just left the store with doesn’t work any better than anything else we have in our tackle box-es. The only thing we seem to catch is new gear, and, lots of sea-weed. (Lots and lots of seaweed!)
We were in Pacific City a month ago and decided to do the shrimp and egg thingy, which I personally found akin to watching grass grow, or fishing with chironomids. So, because we were anchored, I rigged up my 10 weight and began working a couple of Comet variations till my arm got tired, and I went back to watching the grass grow.
The local bank guys were busy catching one fish after another just beyond our bobbers, and two guys showed up and anchored just over from us and proceeded to produce a double hookup on flies. (And, they landed both of them)
This past weekend found us at Waldport, once again following the “Dark Side” with more new gear, and zero luck. You see, fishing with Frank is a lot like watching my Chihuahua chase flies; ain’t nobody catching anything, but it’s still kind of entertaining.
See you on the water—- -
