Constitution Day Celebration DAR, SAR & C.A.R. September 21, 2013
A Celebration of the 226th Anniversary of the signing of the Constitution hosted by the De Anza Chapter of the DAR, District 14, at a luncheon meeting at MCAS Miramar, Officer’s Club, was attended by members of the San Diego Chapter of the SAR and members from CAR. San Diego members Ray Raser, 1st Vice President, and Stan De Long, Chapter Chaplain, represented the San Diego Chapter by participating in the ceremonies and sitting at the head table. Ray extended greetings to the audience from the San Diego Chapter and presented the Martha Washington Medal to host Laurel Lemarie, the SAR Appreciation Medal to District 14 Regent Beverly Stuart-Brook, the Bronze C.A.R. Medal to Victoria Hemphill, SAR Certificate of Appreciation, SAR Challenge coin to Constitution Day speaker Dr. Richard Lederer. Ray led The Pledge of Allegiance and received a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of the San Diego Chapter SAR from the Regent of De Anza Host Chapter Laurel Lemarie. Stan served in the Color Guard and gave a Prayer of Thanks for the meal. Stan also supported Ray in awarding the various medals and certificates. Excellent job by both members I would say. A very entertaining and informative talk presented by Dr. Richard Lederer on the Constitutional Convention and the framing of the Supreme Laws of the Nation was given. Dr. Lederer is a best-selling author and San Diego Union-Tribune language and history columnist. Dr. Lederer provided time for an interesting question and answer period at the end of his lecture. Unfortunately, the event was delayed by an on base power outage that affected the Officer’s club. Though power was never restored during the event it didn’t seem to have any great negative effect on the audience or presenters. The meal was served hot to everyone and though I can’t speak for anyone else I found the dinner enjoyable and probably the best glass of ice tea I’ve partaken of in a long time. And lastly, I was amazed at the end of the luncheon when I looked at my watch and saw that it had been three hours since it started and realized I was completely oblivious to the passing of time; A really enjoyable event. Cabrillo Festival September 29, 2013
Journey back to September 28, 1542 when Cabrillo, a Portuguese navigator sailing under the flag of Spain, landed at San Diego. Stepping ashore on Ballast Point, he was the first European to land on the west coast of what is now the United States of America.
The Cabrillo Festival is a fun event for the entire family, with educational activities, cultural demonstrations and exciting folkloric performances. Brightly colored clothing and dramatic music and dancing bring to life the traditions of the Native American, Mexican, Portuguese and Spanish cultures that are part of the Age of Exploration. The Cabrillo Festival features food booths with delicious traditional Mexican, Native American, Portuguese and Spanish food. Vendors will showcase their various artistic goods.
The highlight of the Cabrillo Festival is the re-enactment of Cabrillo’s landing on the shores of San Diego Bay. “Cabrillo,” his soldiers and a priest sail into the bay on San Salvador (The Californian), and once again claim the land for Spain.
