Center Supervisor's MessageThe cover of this month’s Centerpoint features Clackamas County on Tap & Uncorked. While on the surface this appears to be another Friends fundraiser, underneath it is an all new way for the Milwaukie Center to organize and run a fundraiser.

This event was conceived in January and is a collaboration between the Friends of the Milwaukie Center and the Milwaukie Center Nutrition Program. It has members of both the Center Community Advisory Board and the Friends Board on its planning committee. This collaboration is an ambitious attempt to bring in a whole new group of people to support our services and programs.

The hope is to build this event into an annual cornerstone fundraiser and community event. As supporters of the Milwaukie Center, please help us spread the word among your family and friends and throughout the community. With everyone’s help, we can make this event a huge success!Thank you, Marty Hanley, Center Supervisor

When you lose a loved one, one way to honor their memory is through a gift to the Friends of the Milwaukie Center Endowment Fund. Many times family members and friends are never quite sure what to do, but would like to make a gesture of respect. Let them know about donations in your loved one’s name to the Friends of the Milwaukie Center. We will acknowledge the donation and notify family members of the gift. Call the Friends office for more information.

HONORING THEIR MEMORY

Volunteers have their personal reasons for wanting to be of service to others: To be challenged, to make new friends, to have fun, to feel good, or to be part of a team. Whatever your reason, you will never regret becoming a volunteer. Once you start volunteering, you will see the benefit to the recipients of your efforts and to yourself. It’s a wonderful feeling knowing you are appreciated and make a difference.

How do you volunteer at the Milwaukie Center? It’s as easy as contacting Judith Kallio, Volunteer Coordinator, at (503) 794-8034. She will explain how easy it is to sign up.Available volunteer opportunities:

You know that the food at the Milwaukie Center is great, but do you know who plans, shops and cooks for you?

As of March 1, Courtney has worked at the Center for two years. Before that she worked at Elite Care in Milwaukie. She cooks for the congregate meal, Meals on Wheels and custom orders at Pete’s Cafe.

If you don't see her around this summer for a few months, know that she is on maternity leave! Congratulation, Courtney! While she is gone she will be missing you. Her favorite part of working at the Center is the people – the people she serves, the staff she works with and the many volunteers who work every day in the kitchen.

Did you know that Courtney was a world traveler? She was in the Navy for five years stationed on Whidbey Island in Washington and in Naples, Italy. She also was a flight attendant for Continental Airlines which took her to Brazil, Hawaii, Italy, France, England and eventually, Milwaukie.

WELCOME TERRY JORDAN!Strength and Relaxation Yoga This class takes all the benefits of yoga – meditation, breathing, stretching, strengthening and balance, and brings it to the middle-aged-to-older adult body. Bring a mat. Instructor: Terry Jordan Fee: $55 (62+ $41) Time/Date: 2:15-3:15 p.m. W 9/27-12/6

The Center has a new yoga instructor on Wednesdays. You may already know Terry Jordan because she teaches in so many places in the Portland area and has for over 25 years.

Terry has a degree in health education and added to her knowledge by taking many courses in yoga and other wellness activities for herself. She never expected to teach yoga, but after substituting for other instructors, she found the more she taught, the more people wanted her as a teacher!

Every class is different because every class has a different makeup of ages and abilities. So even though she will be teaching Strength and Relaxation Yoga for the Center, she will adjust the class depending on who attends. Beginners should not have to worry that they will be left behind, and more advanced students should not worry about not being challenged. Terry will give students modifications to suit their needs.

Yoga gives the benefits of adding to your strength in a relaxed way. Terry says you will probably notice a new awareness of your posture, balance and strength after practicing yoga for even a short while. Expect comments from others that you seem “different,” meaning healthier.

Terry herself has had severe arthritis that was significantly helped with yoga. At 60, she notices changes that are the benefit of her fitness routine. As we age we can get stuck physically without movement, so anything we can do to keep moving is positive.

Terry’s class started during summer term ending Aug. 30. Students are welcome to try one class without formally registering, but please check in with Recreation to let them know of your interest.

When you enter the front doors of the Center, be sure and check the readerboard on your left for the time and room of your class or event.
