Sara the First Jewish Mother
By Rabbi Yamin Levy, LIHA Rabbi
Shalom My Dear Friends. Things could not be
better and more exciting at LIHA. The children
are having a great time learning while they are
at it. I am especially enjoying the Rabbi
Readers book club with the 5th
graders. This
week we finish our first book Al Capone Does
My Shirts. Check out the beautiful project the
5th
graders did with the book.
This week’s Perasha begins with the passing
away of our nation’s first matriarch and
mother. Abraham her husband of countless
years weeps and mourns her loss while
preparing her burial. Mothers, my dear friends,
are the givers of life and nothing, nothing at all
can ever break the bond that exists between a
woman and her children. When I reflect on
Sara of old, the mother of our people, I think of
all the women in our community who remain
the anchors of our past and the momentum of
our future.
Our Hakhamim remind us that nothing in the
world can compare to a mother’s love – it is
the force that brings us into existence and
sustains us throughout our lifetime.
A mother inspires with her quiet strength comforts
with her tenderness and awes us with her
endurance. To her young children she is their
whole world – to her adult children she is a haven
of support and guidance. Throughout our lives she
is our protector, our mentor our heroine and our
friend.
The Perasha is actually called Hayye Sara the life
of Sara. It is interesting to note that the Torah put
the seal of life on a chapter dealing with loss
because the powerful truth is that ultimately it is
life and not death that has the last word. Death can
only take from us what might have been but it
cannot take from us what has already happened. It
does not rob us of our past, our shared memories,
our time together and the countless joys and
smiles.
Like the many women who have shaped our lives
Sara Immeinu, Sara our Mother, left a priceless
legacy of ceaseless devotion, and unconditional
love – the first ever “Jewish Mother”.

Nursery November is already here and we have a lot of fun, wonderful
things planned for this month. This week the children discovered the “different shapes” are everywhere such as; our clock is a circle shape, our floor tiles are square shape and a
slice of pizza is a triangle shape. Each child beaded their own “shape necklace” using circle,
square and triangle shapes. The children did a wonderful job and were very proud to wear them home.
The class learned to recognize their names. They colored and identified the first letter of their names.
Some of our books of the week were; “Emily and Joe Letters”, “Shapes and colors”, “Pinkalicious” & “A Dog Needs a Bone”.
Our Shabbat Ima & Abba were Malka & Benny
Pre K
This week we continued our units on fall and colors. We looked at leaves collected by the children and using only red, yellow, blue, black and white paint we try to replicate the leaf color. The children had a great time experimenting. The results are hanging on our class bulletin board. This week's parsha is הרש ייח. The tenant, clouds and candles disappear from the tent after Sarah dies. Eliezer goes to find a wife for Yitzchak. Ask your child how he knew Rivka was the right wife for Yitzchak. When they got married the cloud, Challah and candles came back. This week we decorated the special Bracha for baking Challah and we baked delicious challah for you to enjoy for Shabbat. The English letter was Dd and the Hebrew letter was ד.

Tuesday was Election Day in our classroom. We voted for snack. The choices were cinnamon grahams or animal crackers. The grahams won by a majority 15 - 2. That was our snack that day
along with apples and oranges. We wrote our first short story. The story was about music class. First we began with a brief outline showing what happened first, next and last because every story has a
beginning, middle and end. This is the plot of a story. We then wrote our draft, then revised it and last made all the corrections needed.
We reviewed the initial and final sound of letter “t” while also learning vowel "e" and letter r. We continued to learn about nouns, (places and things) which are naming words. We learned about the
#7 in math and began learning about our five senses in science. Shabbat Shalom!
