During this special time of year, we must take advantage of the opportunity we have to spend time with loved ones, have meaningful conversations and enjoy authentic, joyful moments with those we encounter. We must aspire to love the giver more than the gift, reflect on our blessings and seek out ways to make life better for those around us. Sharing the warmth of friendship is not something we should reserve only for lifelong friends, but extend to new acquaintances as well. In short, now is the time to embrace the fact that we were put on this Earth to advance something other than ourselves.

The staff and volunteers of Sarah Heinz House understand the important role each of us play in helping every child who enters our doors to smile a little brighter, dream a little bigger and realize their inherent potential. We are excited to share this magical time at the House with our member families, treasured partners and guests in hopes of inspiring and empowering each of them to leave a little sparkle wherever they go. For family is not about blood. Rather, family is about those who are willing to hold our hand when we need it most. Family is about brightening each other’s lives and bearing each other’s burdens. It’s about the values that we share despite our different backgrounds, faiths and life-experiences. YOU are our family…YOU are our inspiration…You are our greatest and most precious gift.

Inclement Weather Policy

We make every effort to keep Sarah Heinz House open during inclement weather. However, for the safety all of our members and staff, staying open isn’t always possible. If we need to close or cancel an activity, we will do our best to broadcast the cancellation or delay on KDKA, WPXI and WTAE television stations and their websites. Whenever possible, we will also have a message on our website (sarahheinzhouse.org), Facebook, Twitter and voicemail. When early morning programs and operations (adult fitness) are affected, we will try to have that information posted to the above venues by 5:15am. We do not offer “make ups” or refunds for programs or classes that are missed due to the closing of the facility. For consistency regarding weather policy, we will use the status of Pittsburgh Public Schools as a guideline ONLY for CLOSINGS and EARLY DISMISSALS for our Sarah Heinz House status.

DIFFERENT GUIDELINES FOR AM DELAYS: Do NOT follow Pittsburgh Public Schools as a guideline for morning delays. Please refer to the methods of communication listed above for Sarah Heinz House morning status. If nothing is announced for Sarah Heinz House through those venues above, then we are open on weekdays at 6am for normal operations and program offerings that morning.

When Pittsburgh Public Schools is CLOSED due to weather, Heinz House will ALSO be CLOSED for that day, with no program offerings (youth OR adult). If Heinz House is already open at 6am for morning adult fitness on a particular day before Pittsburgh Public Schools changes their status to closed, then no adult classes will be offered that day, and Fitness Center facilities will close at 10am.

When Pittsburgh Public Schools implement an EARLY DISMISSAL due to weather conditions, Heinz House will CLOSE at 2pm and cancel afternoon and evening programs for that day. Again, any closings or cancellations will be posted and announced as written above.

SIGN UP FOR WPXI’s CLOSING ALERT – FREE!

To receive a Text Message each time we close, you can sign up for a FREE School Closing Alert through WPXI. In order to receive the alerts, you must go to http://www.wpxi.com/sms/signup/ and complete the necessary information. It will ask you for to input your mobile phone number and to create a password. You will also have to input your phone carrier information (i.e. Verizon, AT&T, etc.) and email address. After doing so, you will have to click on the box titled Sarah Heinz House under the “Business and School Closings” portion. Finally, you have to agree to their terms and services and submit your selection. It will send you an initial text message stating that you registered. By doing this, every time that we close, you will receive a text message notifying of the closing.

These guidelines above are for weather related conditions only. There may be times when Sarah Heinz House may need to close (or remain open) for some other reason. When this is the case, the school schedule will not affect our schedule, and the Sarah Heinz House status will still be posted onto the venues listed above.

Basketball Leagues The fee is only $15, for members. The fee for social members is only $30.

League this season, even if you are not an active volunteer. We would

Congrats to our Youth of Year Semi-finalists!

Congratulations to this year’s Youth of the Year Semi-finalists. Twelve teen candidates were selected to work with staff on their packet of obstacles and achievements they have faced throughout their lives. The candidates will be narrowed down to 3-5 finalists over the next two months, and then one candidate will be selected to represent Sarah Heinz House at the State Competition. Congratulations to Carolyn Roberts, George Brown, Kaitlin Heil, Domenic Grimm, Seth Fabry, Laniya White, Matt Wack, Achante Myles, Sydney Serena, Haley Lex, Charlie Minton, and Jazmine Schon.

Sign Ups for Dates for the Winter Trimester (Jan and Feb)

Currently enrolled, Beginning Nov 27th. Enrollment for returning members currently signed up in Oct. trimester classes.

If you want to stay in the same class for the Winter Trimester, make sure you sign up by December 2, 2017 to save your

spot. Current participants in the classes should follow the instructions given on the flyer in their classes or come to the

Front Desk during the above dates and times.

Waiting List: Beginning Dec. 4th at 8am, signups will be opened for anyone who was on the waiting list as of October 31,

2017. We need a signature form for the child for the class.

Waiting List spots will only be reserved for Dec 4 & 5 ONLY.

Anyone else: Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 6that 8am, available class spots are open to anyone (for those classes accepting

new members) People on the waiting list or the public must pay in person at the Front Desk of Sarah Heinz House on

the dates listed above. Payment is due at the time of class sign up.

The time is nearly upon us! Soon C.S. Lewis’ classic will come to life!!!! This year’s annual Holiday Play is sure to be an exciting experience for all!

Please join us at the Masonic Hall on Wednesday, December 13th,

as our vibrant, creative and animated members present The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe!

See you there! Curtain will rise on December 13th promptly at 6:30 pm

at the Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Center, 3579 Masonic Way (off of Cemetery Lane) 15237.

TICKETS: may be purchased at Sarah Heinz House through Tuesday, December 12th, or at the door, if the play is

Member Spotlights

Daniel Snow

Daniel has been a familiar and friendly face around Sarah Heinz House for years. This fall, however, as a newly-minted Middler, Daniel has stepped-up as a leader in programs like Design Factory, Cooking Class, Find Your Strength and Robotics. Daniel recently volunteered at the BGCA Regional Conference, demonstrating Robotics at our exhibition table, and stood out as an excellent example of SHH.

Aryanna Myles

Ms. Myles has step it up this year and began to come out of her shell at Heinz. She has been volunteering for different programs and has been doing an awesome job. She beginning to discover who she is and putting her leadership skills to work. Keep up the good work and continue to shine Aryanna!!

Gold Shield Winner

We’d like to honor Marleighna Goehring (Intermediate) for winning the Gold Shield Drawing for the month of December. Marleighna received her Gold Shield for helping a new Starter girl find her way to Club. Great Job Marleighna! Keep it up!
