Higher vegetable prices push October inflation to 8-month high of 7% Retail inflation for the month rose to a seven-month high of 10.09 per cent, the government said Tuesday.
All three key WPI components -primary articles, fuel and manufactured goods - contributed to the rise in inflation, but the main contributor was vegetables again, though marginally down from September.
Vegetables prices were up 78.38 per cent in October from a year ago, down slightly from 89.37 per cent in the month before, led by onions that were 278.21 per cent pricier than a year ago. Food inflation, which has 14 per cent weight in the wholesale price index, eased marginally to 18.19 per cent, against 18.4 per cent in September, but inflation in fruits and milk, eggs and meat categories gathered pace. Manufactured products inflation, with a 65 per cent weight in the index, climbed to a three-month high of 2.5 per cent in October. Core inflation, the rate of price rise in non-food manufactured products and an important indicator of demand, rose to 2.6 per cent in October from 2.1 per cent in September. The August wholesale inflation figure was revised upwards to 6.99 per cent from 6.1 per cent estimated earlier, on a sharp revision in the food category to 19.19 per cent and manufactured products to 2.3 per cent. Madan Sabnavis, chief economist, CARE Ratings, said food prices had gone out of control. "Monetary policy cannot help ease food prices," he said. That can only be done with the "easing of the supply side bottlenecks," he said. The government and policymakers are hopeful that after the good monsoons, the arrival of winter vegetables will help arrest the rate of increase in prices.
