A Note from the Director

W e are thrilled you are here supporting WVLO Musical Theatre Company, taking time from your busy day to have fun, relax and experience this amazing musical, Mamma Mia!

Back in 1966 Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson began recording together and back-up vocals were sung by their fiancées, Agnetha Faltskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad—ABBA was born.

Mamma Mia! is a musical written by British playwright Catherine Johnson, based on the songs of ABBA, composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, former members of the band. The title of the musical is taken from the group’s 1975 chart-topper “Mamma Mia”. Ulvaeus and Andersson, who composed the original music for ABBA, were involved in the development of the stage show from the beginning. Singer Anni-Frid Lyngstad has been involved financially in the production. The musical opened in the West End of London at the Prince Edward Theatre on April 6, 1999.

I remember the first time I heard ABBA, I was visiting my cousin Jon in Ran-dom Lake, Wisconsin, when I was 18—it was 1976. We were shooting pool and ABBA was playing from the bar’s 8-track. It played over and over and over, but no one minded, we ALL sang along. When I was asked to direct WVLO’s musical Mamma Mia!, I was thrilled that they chose me. What an honor. listening to the songs again but with “older ears” and a more mature sense of self, how amazing these songs are, the notes, the lyrics, they reach out to all of us and make us smile.

There have been many great productions in our area this year, but we really wanted to bring the heart and soul of ABBA to our stage. I was so overjoyed to be at every rehearsal, to help pull props, discuss music, vocals and sets, work on hair colors, to coordinate with such amazing artists and staff who have worked tirelessly to bring you our production of Mamma Mia! What a gift!

We have taken a little different spin on a few things in our production so hope-fully you will enjoy them as much as we have, think Mamma Mia! but with a twist.

After bows, get up from your seat, sing out with all of us—let the music of ABBA be heard!

Sincerely, —Lisa Milanes

She is a Research Associate at Nanosyn working on cancer research.

Melissa Agrillo (Opa, Company) Melissa is excited to be doing her first production with WVLO Musical Theatre Company. Her previous credits include Footloose, Oklahoma! and Fiddler On the Roof. Mamma Mia! has always been one of her favorite musicals so she is happy to finally help bring this to life on stage. She thanks her family for all their support.

Shaelan Barber (Sophie Sheridan) Shaelan joins us for her first WVLO ap-pearance, having previously portrayed Little Sally (her favorite role) in Urinetown. She spent 4 years at SJSU in Theatre Arts preparing for a teaching career. Other theatrical credits include Picasso At The Lapin Agile and In The Heights. A native San Josean, she enjoys playing her guitar and watching TV.

Voula Margelos Brown (Opa, Company) Voula is another newcomer to WVLO, but recently played an ensemble nun in LTSJ’s and FCT’s productions of Sound Of Music. She is a long-time member of Sweet Adelines, currently sing-ing in Bay Area Showcase and Mission Valley Choruses, as well as in Fourmata Quartet. She also directs her church choir in SF. Voula loves ABBA music and it seems natural since she is of Greek extraction. She extends her gratitude to her husband, Martin, for encouraging her to audition for this show and to her singing friends in both choruses who are so supportive of her occasional penchant to sing in musical theatre!

Kevin Brownstein (Sam Carmichael) Kevin is elated to return to the WVLO stage after a 5-year hiatus, having been previously seen in Jesus Christ Superstar (Peter/Judas US). Other credits include Mame (Older Patrick) with SBMT; La Cage aux Folles (Concertina Player), A Chorus Line (Cut Dancer), and Pippin (Player) with SCP. Many thanks to the music educators in my life, both past and present.

Marlon Chen (Featured Dancer, Company) Marlon makes his performing debut with WVLO; however, he is famous for pushing the piano across the stage in Will Rogers Follies! He was most recently seen as Luiz in LTSJ’s The Goldoliers (his favorite role) and a crow in their Wizard Of Oz. For WVC he was Big Jule and a featured dancer in Guys & Dolls; Jacob and Potiphar in Joseph….Dreamcoat. Marlon wanted to be part of this production for “all the fame and fortune”. We hope he found both!

Nancy Dean (Auntie Em) Nancy has been our Properties Mistress since 2011, so having her onstage is an unusual treat. She did appear onstage in our last pro-duction of Will Rogers Follies as an “undresser”, but when she was invited to be a “walk-on” in this show (which has been her favorite featuring all the ABBA music she loves) she jumped at the chance. She earned her MA from Santa Clara University and has been a Marriage & Family Therapist since 1987 in private practice. With three adult children and 4 grandchildren, she keeps busy with square dancing, crossword puzzles, reading and theater. Nancy is one of our many dedicated and popular volunteers!!

Suzanne L. Duval (Featured Dancer, Company) Suzanne returns for her second production with WVLO, her first was in 1980 in the dance ensemble of Good News! Most of her other credits are in dance ensembles with SJCLO, SCP, Scotts Valley Chamber of Commerce, San Luis Obispo, Nevada and Japan. This is her favorite musical and she loves dancing for our Choreographer. She loves tap dancing, snow-boarding and jigsaw puzzles and the highlight of her career was performing in Japan and South Africa. Her future goal is to travel to Australia and Antartica since she hasn’t been there yet.

Andrea Furtado (Dance Captain) Andrea is excited to be joining WVLO again this year in her 8th production!!! Some of her favorite shows include Nice Work If You Can Get It, In the Heights, and Spamalot. With over 20 years of dance experience, Andrea enjoys tap and jazz the most. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Dance from SJSU where she specialized in Modern and Musical Theater. In her spare time she enjoys traveling and spending time with her dog, Kalea!

Cynthia Rust Greaves (Opa, Company) Cynthia started in community theatre just four years ago and has loved every minute of it! She has appeared in WVLO Musical Theatre’s productions of Sister Act as Sister Mary Lazarus, Oklahoma!, The Boyfriend and Nice Work If You Can Get It, as well as SCP’s Fiddler on the Roof and La Cage aux Folles, and Woodside Community Theatre’s My Fair Lady. When not on stage, she’s a PR professional, and an avid reader, hiker and traveler.

Jessica Herrera (Featured Dancer, Company) Jessica returns to WVLO for her second production, having most recently appeared in Smokey Joe’s Café. She has been dancing for over ten years and performing for even longer. Outside of musi-cal theater, she is a member of Elemental Remix, a high-energy. all-female dance group based in SJ and has been a dancer and singer at Ariel Dance Productions in Campbell. She would like to thank all of you for supporting local theatre. She dedicates her performance to her family and friends who have been so supportive of her artistic endeavors and who inspire her with their creativity and encourage her daily with their confidence!

Andy would like to dedicate her performance to her wonderful husband and their three daughters who have rooted her on, found her the Tylenol, and given her new tap shoes for her birthday.

Paige Kompelien (Opa, Company) Paige is another newcomer to the WVLO stage, but has an impressive list of directorial credits. She graduated from SJSU in 2009 with a BA in Theatre Arts, emphasis on Acting and a minor in Communica-tion Studies.
