Community 4th of July Celebration and Fireworks

on July 6th! Don’t miss it here at the church. There is lots of food, lots of games, lots of fun, lots of music, a great fireworks display to end the day and it is all free to everyone. Let’s celebrate the birth of our nation together! (These photos are from last year.)

Brett’s CommentsWhen I was in college, I discovered quickly the freedom that being away from home afforded me. I could stay up late watching TV or playing video games into the early hours of the morning. I could choose to do my homework whenever I wanted – or not do it at all! (Although I wouldn’t recommend that.) I could take a spontaneous road trip with friends, go sledding down hills on dorm room mattresses, or make midnight runs to Taco Bell (I wouldn’t recommend that last one, either.) My freedom offered me enjoyment and experiences that I’d never had before. And yet, if I wasn’t careful, my freedom led to some poor decisions and not-so-pleasant consequences. In those cases, I allowed my freedom to become all about me.

Paul reminds us “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” (Gal. 5:13) Freedom was never meant to be about ourselves, but always about others. In Christ, we have been set free from everything that seeks to control us; any desire of our flesh, any sin this world has to offer, any prideful, arrogant attitude. Jesus’ death set us free from those things. And now that we are free, the temptation will always be to make that freedom about ourselves. “It’s my life! I can do what I want!” Isn’t that the very attitude that got us into trouble in the first place? Instead, Paul offers the solution – serve one another humbly in love. After all, that is what Jesus did for us. This time of year we typically take some time to pause and reflect on the freedom we enjoy in our country. But this year I want to invite and challenge you to, as you reflect on that freedom, to make it about the One who gave you that freedom. And as you focus on Him, use your freedom as an opportunity to serve others around you. In doing so, you’ll experience what true freedom is all about!

Built By Doers

There are many reasons to be inspired by our story as a country as we celebrate Independence Day. There’s inspiration from the story, the principles, and ideology that form the structure of our government, the essence of the Constitution, and so on. What inspires me the most about our nation’s “Genesis” story is that it was built by doers. Not just doers with nothing better to do, but doers who understood that voluntarily taking action meant taking on sacrifice as a natural consequence. They willingly gave up comfort to make something happen that benefited so much more than themselves.

I had a professor who told a story about when he was working for a church. They had a gentleman in the church trying to get to work in painting houses; so the church lent him the church ladder to get started. The gentleman ended up moving out of town and taking the ladder with him. At the next leadership meeting there was a lengthy discussion about the proper way to get the ladder back; call him, find where he lived and visit him, or even sue him! This frustrated my professor so much he took out his wallet, threw a couple $20’s on the table and said, “JUST GO BUY ANOTHER LADDER!” The principle of courtesy and returning property may have been deep on their minds, but did that do?

We finished our series through the book of Acts and I hope you get the same inspiration from the stories of the early church in there as you do our American history. The church was built on people that did what they believed, not on insistence. Our country was made by men and women who believed there was a better way for all people and chose to put themselves in physical harm for it. The church was made by men and women who believed there was a true path that gave us our true purpose: a life with God and each other. They put their lives on the line showing that and sharing it at all costs, sacrificing all of their minor and big comforts.

We are more than people of a nation, we are followers of Christ and people of the one true God. Let’s be people of God who are doers.

Hi, my name is Craig Cunningham and I am the new Worship Coordinator at Sardinia Church of Christ! I am originally from Louisville, KY where I spent the first eight years of my life before moving to Taylorsville, KY. After moving out for college and adult life, I moved around a few more times, and have finally landed in Cincinnati, OH. I started my undergraduate studies at Kentucky Christian University in the fall of 2009 and graduated in the spring of 2013 with a Bachelor’s Degree in University Studies and Bible, and a minor in Worship Arts. I also graduated again from Kentucky Christian University in 2017 with a Master’s Degree in Christian Leadership. While attending there, I made lifelong friends and studied the Bible in order to be prepared for doing ministry. I also helped lead worship, played guitar on worship teams, participated in Camp Teams for two summers, and other outreach teams within the school.

I am happily married to my wife Courtney as of May 5, 2018 and I absolutely love doing life with her. She is truly my favorite person and my better half. We are expecting our first child in December 2019 and we couldn’t be more excited! I had no idea what this season of our life would look like, but it is so exciting knowing that we will have a kid to call our own and help raise. We are currently living on the east side of Cincinnati, OH in Anderson Township where we purchased our home last year. I love being close to all of my favorite restaurants (Chipotle, Skyline Chili, to name a few) but Courtney and I would like to raise our family in the country in the next few years.

Some members in the congregation are familiar with me from my time in the group 64 To Grayson and coming to share our ministry at the church. While I still do perform with the band, we are much less busy than we used to be. I have spent about seven years in the band as an original member with my friend Zack Shelton. We have performed over 1,000 times at different churches, fairs, festivals, and various events. I couldn’t even begin to count how many miles that we have traveled or the people that we have seen and met along the way. The time I have spent with the band has held wonderful memories for me through the years.

Playing guitar is something that I continue to love doing today, even after playing it for about 15 years. I can also play bass, drums, mandolin, lap steel, dobro, some piano, etc. Guitar is my favorite, but I do enjoy playing other instruments such as those mentioned. I also enjoy spending time with my wife, playing video games and hanging out with family.

I do appreciate everyone in the church being very welcoming to Courtney and me during our time here so far. We are excited to see the way that God continues to work in our lives and everyone else’s here as well.

Craig

What’s Happening Here at Church?

Prayer Meeting on Sunday, July 7th Meet at the church at 6:00 p.m. for a time set aside for prayer for our families, for this church, for our community, for our state, for our nation, and for our individual needs. We’ll be praying for protection from Satan and the spiritual forces of evil

in the heavenly realms and against the spirits of bondage/addiction, unbelief, pride, and fear operating in our country. Then we can experience first hand the strong arm of God and His Spirit moving through our land. To God be the glory! Amen.

Every week plates are set out for a free will offering of a dollar. At the end of the month the money collected is given to someone in the community in need. Church members can recommend someone who has been hit with difficult times. Application forms are available at the Welcome Center or on our web page at sardiniacc.com under Our Ministries/The Dollar Difference. Getting involved can make a dollar difference for someone!

What a fantastic week of vacation Bible school! We had an average of 81 students including preschool and from 25 to 30 volunteers daily who were teachers, crew leaders, snack ladies, music leaders, bell ringers, van drivers, messengers, and those who took care of registration, media, photography and on and on.

VBS Roar was an African adventure where kids explored God‘s goodness and celebrated a ferocious faith that powers them through this wild life. The kids learned that when life is unfair, scary, changing, is sad, and is good that God is good! He is always, always good!

We even celebrated a baptism with the kids on Tuesday when Tesla DeRossett was baptized into Christ during our daily safari celebration ending. What a blessing!

My many thanks go to Katie Pollard for heading up and completely taking charge of the preschool. Without her I don’t know what I would do. Many thanks to Joe Henslee for picking up all the loose ends and being there through it all! Many thanks also to all of the volunteers and the donations of items and money. We raised $700 to go to Lifeline Christian Missions to help with our local rice packing efforts!

I love each and everyone of you and hope you were truly blessed as much as I was! God bless you all and thank you for all that you do for the kids in our church and community!
